Title: nervous, yet excited father
Post by: ack1961 on January 13, 2011, 11:34:22 AM
Next Sunday my youngest boy (Nick, 12) makes his stage debut in a small club in Raleigh.  Back in December, my oldest son (Chris, 17) asked Nick to sit in for their drummer (who was pretty ill) a day or two before that show, but it got postponed due to a snowstorm. Now they've rescheduled the show to the 23rd of Jan, and the band asked Nick if he'd like to play drums on the first 5 songs of their set.

The fact that they've recognized that Nick was willing to sit in back in Dec., and they've offered him a slot is pretty cool.  Their drummer is a key member of the band and Nick is a bit unpolished (they practice in our Jam Room, so I can hear the difference between the two on the same songs), but they're overlooking that aspect of it and working the top of their setlist around him. Nick's been taking lessons for a few years and seems unphased about getting on stage and banging away. I wish I had that fearlessness - having never been on stage myself, I can't help but be nervous for him...same as I was the first time Chris stepped up on one a few years back. They're just a High School garage band, but they've been writing their own stuff and taking a few liberties with some contemporary covers.

It should be fun, exciting and nerve-wracking - I see more hair loss on my part.

Thanks for the support guys. My wife and I are really excited about this.

Hey Denis,  the show is at the Berkeley Cafe' (W. Martin St.) in downtown Raleigh.  The show is being hosted by Afton, and tickets can be purchased online (the kids get a piece of the door if they sell tickets online) - the link is below. The show is 23-Jan-2011 and their band name is "Betwixt".
It would be great to meet you, talk a little bass and motorcycles.

I'm sure the little drummer boy will do just fine, but I'm worried about his parents!!!

Best for the gig!

Break a leg !

Scott, your old Fury is also going to be on stage that night as well.
The original drummer is going to play bass for the first short set, and he loves the Fury.

Here's a clip of Nick's first time on stage this past weekend.
As you can see, Nick didn't have any nerves behind the drum kit and my other son (vocals, guitar) really enjoyed having him up there for a few easy songs.
He actually got to play one of the band's originals, which was pretty cool.  Opening with a Ramones tune probably helped.

@uwe - yeah, he was just doing whatever he felt like doing...the Ramones way - no rules.

They did a great job!
Tell the kid with the strat that when playing The Ramones he needs to replace his smile with a diseffected sneer. :D :D
Congrats to you all.

Congrats to you all.

Thanks. The kid with the strat is their regular bassist and their drummer switched over to bass for the first few songs.
They played pretty well for not really being comfortable with the instruments they were playing.
The fact that the kids were willing to do the 'ol switcheroo to get Nick on stage was pretty cool of them.
...and I totally agree - if you're given the chance to look like a Ramone for a song - take it!
Very few bassists ever looked as cool as Dee Dee Ramone.

I think they did a nice power metal version of it. The Ramones sound is not so easily replicated at all.
