Im going with 2 Dimarzio model G's, a 3 point bridge, toggle w/ no surround, V-V-T
(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d138/shadowcastaz/IMGP0708.jpg)
Neck I had to add some wood to the sides and used a tracing from a Moderne headstock for the shape
(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d138/shadowcastaz/IMGP0751.jpg)
Im hoping to do the strawberry blond configuration that Doc used on his Jr,or I may do natural & blond if the grain of the neck and body are close when I grain fill. Rosewood board with MOP dots
-
That's a cool idea, keep us updated on the progress.
In a side note; I always thought that Gibson should've called the Moderne the "Mantis" instead because it rather looks like a Praying Mantis
(http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/780/616607.JPG)
-
That is gonna be SO cool!!!!!!
I thought I was the only person that would like one of those, awesome project!
-
Yeah, great and unique!!
-
Cool project!
What kind of wood are you using? Is that Honduras Mahogany or is it Korina?
-
Mahogany. The guy I got the body from screwed up the bridge route & had to patch . He had planned a natural finish. Im going to try to work some magic on the glue lines to see if I can pull off the natural finish. Its not lookin good but I have to try. You can see the lines in the pic. Otherwise its a very nice layout. I have enough mahog planks to make 4 or 5. If my pending interview does not produce a job, I may have to resort to doing knock- offs.
-
I like this so much, I might have to try and pull of my favorite weird modern bass design:
Nice job Shadow!!!!
-
Please don't start about the Gretsch Billy Bo Jupiter Thunderbird Bass. I just need one, but it's 3K...
-
Yeah, these funky looking basses are intriguing. The rare Guild Thunderbird is another I'd like to recreate some day too.
-
I was tinkering with the projects the other night and the Modern body has rounded edges already so I may have trouble doing the top blond and the back strawberry(gibby red). I could retop it but would that be worth the trouble?
I love that red bird . real crazy retro. I like the fingernail inlays on those fretboards
-
Two model G's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That thing is going to be a flame thrower :o Very nice work btw
-
Did anyone see this mini-Moderne bass on ebay? Kinda cute.

Your project looks much more interesting, though. I love the look of pointy instruments that aren't full-force metal looking.
-
Two model G's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That thing is going to be a flame thrower :o Very nice work btw
Yeah ,Ive had them ,NIB, for several years. I just could not get beyond the color. They will be fine on this baby. I should flip one of them around like an LP or do the Peter Green thing and confuse everyone
-
Really nice job. I always like the Modern shape. Model G's are purrfect!
-

Im back at it due to employment woes ,however I did finally fit the neck . I will post more neck close ups once I do some sanding at the joint. The body had been routed wrong for one of the pups and block filled . . The thought of doing natural "korina" like the above pic was out (which is why I liked Docs cherry vanilla as an alternative).
I sat one afternoon ,put the pup & surround in it and realized that there was only a small amt of the fill block showing. So i proceeded to make some xacto induced grain holes of varied shape around the glue lines ,tinkered with some grain filler and I may be able to do the "korina look after all

-
This is way cool!
Any idea how you're going to work the tuner/headstock layout?
-
2X2 sort of off set like the guitars. Im working on the string rollers that guide(line up) the strings with the nut. I may do an overlay for the headstock or just a gloss black with a silver gibby logo .
-
What scale are you using?
-
Looks great so far. keep updated
-
Man that is so funky looking. I think it's gonna look great. The color of those pups have grown on me. I have a new one too a guy gave to me in exchange for a pickguard. Just waiting for the right project to drop it into. A natural finish would be cool for sure.
-
30" scale. The neck is one of those evil bay ones I managed to grab a while back and scabbed on some mahog for the headstock width. Im considering a coiltap but Im still on the fence. today Im doing the dots on the fretboard.
-
Yeah ,Ive had them ,NIB, for several years. I just could not get beyond the color. They will be fine on this baby. I should flip one of them around like an LP or do the Peter Green thing and confuse everyone
Yeah Model G's sure are ugly but man they sound great ! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/IMG_4323.jpg)

Natural or BLOND!!?????Haaaaaaaallllp!!!!!!!
-
Natural or BLOND!!?????Haaaaaaaallllp!!!!!!!
Well, I am partial to blonde myself!
-
Actually I would go with Amber transparent dye & Clear to really get that vintage Korina look.
With a black pickguard it would look great.
-
This is one of the coolest project bass if not the coolest project bass ever!
Like Mark, I thought I was the only one who would want one of these, seeing as how they didn't exist...before now.
How awesome would it be to see Billy and Dusty with matching Moderns?
Great work, keep the pictures coming amigo.
-
Damn, that's gonna be a great looking bass. Now I want one, too!
-
I was pondering this awhile ago, figures the 'Post has someone already on task!
I love that kind of blackwashed looking stained Korina. I'd vote for that if you're still undecided about a color.
-
Headstock overlay & lots of cleanup......
-
I'll make no bones about it: Wanna sell?
Jealousy is the sincerest form of flattery. Great, great work.
-
Danke!!! Im in a pickle because the width of the neck is a bit narrow near the body. I know I have a Schaller 460 . I found the plate that goes in the bottom of the bridge that holds the ball end of the strings. I know I had 3 and sold 2. DAMN!!! I do have a NIB G3 bridge that may work . I also have a new hipshot. I might just make new saddles for the 3 point and do a string thru set up.
An aside, I always seem to set the neck too high off the body. I have to remove my Pontiac Gold bird neck(avatar) for the same reason. I should stop, remove the neck on the moderne and drop it deeper into the body. If i can find the bridge, Ill line things up again and see if i really have to reset the F@#**! neck.
Its snowing like a bastard here , BTW.
-
Thanx Doc!Once again you reinforce my feeling that most people are good.M
-
great idea making a gibson modrne bassguitar. looks nice.
-
Thanx Doc!Once again you reinforce my feeling that most people are good.M
My pleasure Mike. Being honest is truly its own reward.
-
How is this for color/ KORINA!!!!!!!
-
That looks excellent. i can't wait to see this thing take life.
-
How is this for color/ KORINA!!!!!!!
Cool picture Mike, looks like it exploded! Hey, what kind of rings do you have on those pups? Are they the same size as a guitar humbucker? I've got a Model G without a ring and I was wondering.
-
Yeah,I have cream colored surrounds and decided to put flat chrome rings on top .
-
Here is the color with SS & and some nitro. It ended up not as light as I may have wanted but it is mahogany made to look korinaish. the dark area on left top of bridge route is a camo area trying to conceal a miss route of the bridge pup. This is why I was going to do it blond. I said what the hell, give it a go.
the headstock gave me heartburn . I used a fiber NOS gibby facing.I used off white epoxy to fill logo. It discolored when I sanded. I SS it and did about 6 coats nitro and it looked grey!. DUH ! I stripped it taped it, taped the logo and sprayed black gloss nitro.. It still needs TLC though .
lesson.... paint the overlay BEFORE you set letters and SS and 6 coats of clear!!!!!!!! Im humbled once again........
-
Learning mistakes or not, that's a beautiful creation. I really want one now!
-
Looks really nice.
-
Finally I buffed her and put together
(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d138/shadowcastaz/IMGP0947.jpg)
ready to string her up....
...and I cant find the bone nut I made or the screws for the pup rings.......
so back to the shop to make another nut and find the damn screws!!!!
I am ,however almost happy!
-
That is so funky! Looking good. Hope you find the screws, if not, I probably have some that would work.
-
Unique... beautiful... extraordinary... superlatives fail, etc...
Looking forward to the final pages of this story with great interest... 8)
-
U guy are quick!! Thanx! Im amazed how comfy it feels when seated, unlike a V which is next to impossible to play seated. I bought some ground flats for it. Never used them . Hopefully soon .M
-
Never played a "V" of any kind but told the best way is with one fin "between the legs" - Only ever seen one Moderne "in the flesh", in a London showroom, shortly after the "re-issue"...
-
Holy crap that is sooooooooooooooooooooo cool ! Nice work.
-
Awesome! And the short scale neck is perfect for that body shape, it doesn't look like a bass version of a guitar, it looks like it was made to be a bass from the start.
Where's the pickguard? I really think it would look even better with one.
BTW, I'm very temped to build one myself.
-
I like the looks of this better as a bass than a guitar! Excellent work.
-
It turned out really cool. Nice job.
-
Barkless & Doc you guys rock with your inspiration, builds and advise.
Im dedicating this girl to you all, once I find the parts etc.
The proportions are very comfortable. It would not look right with a long scale. Im planning a PG like the orig one for sure..Its the last part. I may put an old string on it and test my wanky wiring skills.
Oh yeah, G.O.T. you rock also with your help & advise with the model G's 'n all else.
She is purdy in the sun. Ill send some sunny pics.M
-
Amazing! Great!
-
Crazy awesome project! 8)

"BTW, I'm very temped to build one myself."
Id be happy to do a tracing and measured drawing at some point.M

If you send me measurements and basic tracing, I promise to build one!
-
Just one word: Fantastic!
-
Great job on this one!!
-
Wiring is wonkie as usual . I tried to use a push/pull on the neck pup but I think its cooked . Im putting in a CTS pot this week.M
-
I have to tweak the nut and glue her down . Why they stopped making the model G will remain a mystery. This shorty is a monster!
pics soon
-
I'll be waiting... 8)
-
Finally got a small bit of sun. Im excited I may have a job, some nice weather & a bach bass all in 1 week.(2out of 3 aint bad)Im having to learn some knob adjusting with this unusual lil 'critter I have here. I still have to tweek the nut/saddles although I never did mind a buzz,if you know what i mean . Thanx for all the encouragement, inspiration & support.M

That is what I call a special bass! Very nice! In that last pic it looks like a praying mantis! :D
-
That thing is WAY too cool! Blows away any of those guitar of the week things Gibson made. I would love to have one. Nice concept, nice work!
-
I just remembered I have to do some measurements for one of the members(oops, sorry). Someone else ,early in the project said Praying mantis. Cool bug, cool bass i guess. Thanx.
-
Wow! That is beautiful.
I'm very impressed.
Can't wait to hear sound samples.
-
Great job. Sunlight really makes it look great.
-
Really cool!
I'm interested in those string guides. What did you use for those?
I'm the one who asked for measurements and basic tracing. Now that I see it completed with that cool pickguard, I definitely want to build one.
It really looks like this model was a bass project all along, not a bass version of a guitar.
-
Wow, turned out great Mike! Nice job. I could be convinced to play it, send it on down to NY! ;)
-
That is SO cool!
I'm very evious of all of you that have this talant, beautiful work.
Good luck with the job too!
-
A true work of art... V 8)
-
Very beautiful! You really did a great job!
Best of luck on the job prospect!
-
If that sounds as good as it looks you'll have one hell of a great sounding bass!
-
I htink those G's are butt kicking pups. I'll bet she roars! :D
-
Wow, that is beautiful, strange and just plain cool all at once! Nice job!
-
And if work remains shy I bet there is a nice German Gentleman that would be willing to offer you a nice commission on a companion to that one... ;)
-
Ive been out of the kitchen too fuggin long . I want back IN! Id be honored to make one for ze kollection. Gotta get ze partz
-
You know Mike, I wasn't so sure about this design, but it's really growing on me. I like it a lot more than a flying V.
Good luck with the job thing. Best wishes!!!
-
Im serious when I say I have no interest in a flyingV .It is not a comfortable bass (for me) This lil gal is really comfi. The neck has a funny radius but it works. I just ordered some shirts for my job .
-
"My job" ... sounds nice and positive...!
-
I hope so!Thanx for the thoughts.M
-
Congrats on the new gig! ;D ;D
-
Thanx its been a long haul . worked 35 + years & I collected unemployment for the 1st time . Degrading to say the least. The only saving grace was being able to file on line & not having to go EVERY WEEK with your hand out!
-
Congrats! I can imagine how hard it's been. Best of luck!

I feel very fortunate to still be working and to never have had to file for unemployment "There but for the grace of God go I"
All I will toss out here is that for 35+ years you paid in to unemployment system, via your employers tax payments, and how ever long you have been out you in no way came close to receiving what you paid in - I would feel the same way, trust me in this, but you are just getting back a small portion of what you've paid in! ;D
-
I agree Lightyear its kinda like insurance. You pay it in over a long period of time and hope that you never get any of it back.
Good luck with the new job shadowcastaz
-
Congrats on the new job. I know it had to be hell to go through.
-
Again I say thanx for the support & encouragement. Long live the low end &and all that it brings to our world!
-
Amen...

Glad you are now among the employed ! I was out of work from October to March, my first time collecting unemployment.......................it sucks big time. I have never not had a job, there was always something. Not this time, the silence was deafening. I would send out tons of resumes and make calls and nothing I was stunned. Now go build up your GAS fund !
-
Happy to hear that!
-
Hey Uwe , did you place an order for a Moderne Bass yet?
-
Can I? The man has a new job, Rob!
But if the owner should ever consider to De-Moderne his collection ... I'll be there!
-
Ive been out of the kitchen too fuggin long . I want back IN! Id be honored to make one for ze kollection. Gotta get ze partz
He is inviting you to place an order...
-
Go for it, it would be a worthy addition.
-
Do I take a 10% cut for management and promotion...? ;D
-
Whoa!!!!!!!!!!!Slo down cowboys! I get back to work for 5 days and your selling me off to the father land and Kenny -O is on commission !!!WTF!!!!.
The job is interesting. Ill leave it at that. Of course , as soon as I accept the job I had 2 other offers and one opportunity. one is a small restaurant near the hotel I was asked to resign from . chef ,50 seats , itallian medeteranean based with seasonal , organic sustainable blah blah blah. Lo pay + 20% of profit + local+ 5% ownership each year up to 20% ownership.
Sweat equity . i would love to be back near my old job and show them what food is again .
If my hands get any more f'ed up I may sell them all so I can still cook.
Once I get into a routine I have some maho dying to go to europe, then again the parts oh the parts......................
-
Hang on a sec, Rob have you roped in Ken to help you get another project off the ground here?
Mike how big a run of Moderne's were you thinking of doing? ;D
-
The job is interesting. Ill leave it at that. Of course , as soon as I accept the job I had 2 other offers and one opportunity.....
Two old, and over used, sayings - sorry. but I feel compelled to dole them out again (must be getting old) ;D
One in the hand is worth more than two in the bush..
It's easier to find a job when you have a job....
My aplolgies :)
Oh, and be wary of fast talking Englishmen
-
If I were to do another Moderne. i would do 3. It would take a bit more time but once you set up a saw or piece of equipment ,making repetitive cuts are easy as long as you start organized and number the pieces as you go.
Yeah old but true. Its too hard to explain . In short, Im making sandwiches for take-away service(premade) . I was hired as a cafe manager and there isnt a kitchen . its in a Bakery specialty store that is busy. they want to expand the take-away concept to a Cafe style. No one in the company has any food service or restaurant experience. Now that Im there my instincts tell me beware. They want fresh local meats etc and all I have is an electric maytag stove.
The opportunity is more my style . Ill know If the owner want to meet this week. . We know of each other but we have to have some face time over a glass of wine to see if the chemistry is right. I dont have a boastful ego but I have a loyal following in town because of my 20 + year tenure as a chef. I may just roll the dice. we all know about following bands & players so its kinda similar....I think.
Kenny-O we can talk.........................................
-
I can assure you that my assistance would only be in hoping Uwe get's something almost "unique" and most certainly "Gibson-flavoured", with my influence being more "catalytic" than "cash"... ;)
If time is a problem, here's a totally off the wall idea, would this be a job for "Bach-Man"... :o
"Shadocastaz" (sorry, don't know your name), should this go on the Rob/"Basvarken" list of future projects... now that I might be tempted by... the first thing that should be asked, simply out of respect to your gorgeous efforts, is your permission to forward the idea... 8)
-
Thanx & be my guest!
-
Rob...? 8)
-
It woudn't have the charm that Mike's masterpiece has.
Plus BaCH doesn't have any korina to build it from.
(I asked them a while ago because our guitarist would love to have an affordable yet well built korina Flying V or Explorer)
-
Mine is maho made to look Korina.
-
Still, I think BaCH would have a hard time trying to equal your masterpiece.
But maybe Roman could chime in? He's a board member after all.
-
Ah, Mike it is... well Mike, there is no denying that the "original" is, and always shall be, the original, and a designers advice is always essential in any project undertaken... ;)
-
Mike, I found your new project ;)
We need a bass version of the Gibson Corvus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Corvus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Corvus)
-
Great idea Brett!
on a sidenote: I have tried to see the "crow in flight" in this guitar, but I just can't
-
Personally I see a Crow squatting with constipation but then I've always had an over active imagination. ;D
-
Holy Crap!!!! Crow crapping that is!Never even heard of it . I gotta do some homewerk on this thing.
-
:D
-
Look around and you can pick one up for about $300.
Turn it horizontal with the neck to the left, the controls on top are the crow's eyes. More effective looking with the single pickup model and a black body.
I wonder... do old crows ever get crows' feet around their eyes? ;D
-
I see Pac Man
-
We had a baby crow for a while in '92 until he needed "aviary time" to get his wings up to strength... my wifes youngest nephew named him "Ugly Kid Crow", found him wandering around on the ground with no-one but a cat taking interest... :o so he caught him and we got him to raise...
Yes, we have pictures, somewhere... ( but true)
-
I see a tadpole or semen. :-[
-

I beg to differ. Put in the position you want (and your positions are always my fave, Dave!), I'd see the control part as the wings of a crow flying right to left, with the headstock being the crows beak (after a very long neck that is ....). Or the other way around, with the controls part being the crow's belly. In any case, it is that headstock which looks birdish.
-
Your explanation works just as well. Especially for six-eyed crows with knobs on their bellies or wings.
In an case, it's a shame this design didn't take the guitar-buying public by storm. :P
-
I kinda like it. :-[
by Card-Carrying 20/20 Owner
-
U(we) have no shame... ;D
-
I like it too.
Not sure if I would buy one, but that's a different story ;)
