That makes perfect sense. Very cleanly done, too.

There was a recent post on TB with a similar idea on a Fender - it was wood and used the pickup mounting screws to hold it in place.  Nice way to avoid marking or modifying the instrument.

Can you squeeze a pick in too?

Now that's a clever idea, at least for fingerstyle. Might get in the way if you pick over the neck pickup. Nicer looking than the clear zero mod rest.

I move my hand position around all of the time , so I really don’t get thumb rests . I use my thumb a lot too , but for not for slapping .

It certainly does look like a 60ies design piece, they got that right.

I just rest my thumb on the edge of the pickguard, but I know some people like a little more surface area. The only bass I ever put a thumb rest on is my Fenderbird. I made it out of a piece of 1/8'' thick aluminum flat stock.

My thumb floats. I'd probably use a thumbrest if it were in the right spot, but the last time I recall doing that was when i had my Coronado bass.

My thumb rests on the pick!

I have no use for a thumb rest in that location. Fingerstyle sounds best to me about halfway between the last fret and the bridge, i.e. above or behind a P pickup location. On a Ric, the only way I found that feels comfortable and sounds good is to remove the handrest (I use the Treble Bezel), anchor on the E string over the pickup and finger-pick right behind it. On the white '73 I have a horseshoe so it's pick only.

Neanderthal fingerstyle player that I am, I rest my thumb on the side of a pickup or the edge of the pickguard as seems most convenient.

What can I say? Aside from my thumbs, I'm all bloodhound with a sensitive nose!
