Title: Other hobbies
Post by: Denis on January 13, 2010, 08:31:14 AM
Since Mark's nifty BaCH thread started including other hobbies, maybe we should have a thread for other hobbies. So far, Star Trek, model trains and aircraft carriers are popular. What else? I'll start.

I have a small collection of toy Studebakers, bunches of old model kits and am currently working on a couple of Indian motorcycles.

What about you guys?

Owls you say?

We have a pair of Great Horned Owls that moved in our neighborhood. I took this one morning in our back yard. Sometimes he hoots so loud when he sits on our house it rattles the windows. Cool at first, but becomes irritating when they hoot all night (mating season is fall )

I used to collect dwarf conifers, but ran out of room in our yard (and don't have the $$$ anymore). Have a small Koi Pond

Blue Heron feeding pond, I should say

I was helping my dad with the family tree for a few years before he passed away.  Lately, I'm down to working and playing.  I'm a pretty dull guy these days.

Mark, want to build my Wimer Grist Mill HO model?  I couldn't believe that there is actually a model of one of my ancestor's properties.

Lessee......

I maintain and repair my own cars...(6, including daughters)
Do my own home repair...
Teach a graduate course online for an institution in New Jersey...
Serve on the Advisory Council for a College at my alma mater...
Help coordinate alumni activities in Colorado for my alma mater...
Regional Chair (6 states) for a national professional organization...

I guess music is my hobby, unless you count any of those above.

I used to have a bit more time and often wrote articles for various magazines here's a couple pages by yours truly........Model railroding is an enjoyable hobby because it has some many facets, model making, woodworking, amatuer historian/ researcher and photography to name a few.

No pics - no kits...   ;)

Also into writing, photography, SciFi, ornithology, geneaology, specific histories (Scottish and CBI-WW2), I play instruments occasionally...  ;D

Al... I'll raise you Great Horned Owl (oh so cool...!) with a dozen or so Rose Ring Necked Parakeets that were gobbling up all the food in our garden today  - VERY noisey... (very odd seeing parrots in the snow!) We had the UK's primary roost just a mile from us - 5000 birds would gather there every night... the owners of the land put up some phone masts and chopped down the trees... the parakeets all moved on... Once rescued a Barn Owl from the slip road of a motorway in the snow, near Heathrow Airport - warmed her up in the van and off she went - a very satisfying experience, no wing damage, probably got caught in a truck downdraught... similar thing with a Kestrel, too... Used to look after a one-eyed tawny owl... the garden has a significant critter graveyard... Used to do a lot of voluntary work with a wildelife rescue charity...

Ms Hills... I had to do a double-take on all your pictures - I honestly thought they were the real-thing... that is exquisite workgirlship...

... and not forgetting Ronn - I had to look that one up - care to explain further...?

Lifted this to reply here...

I want to see progress pics. I have an Enterprise D (I despise most of the post-Rick Berman era Starfleet ships, the "E" included)  that I built about 15 years ago that been dropped and stepped on (nephews and drunk friends) and rebuilt several times that I love dearly. I just painted the inside of the clear "glowing" nacelle and deflector dish and it looks really good except where the curing of the paint caused cracks on the inside of the "red" nacelle front. I used to be a hardcore model builder of military aircraft, but my best work got destroyed (again: nephews and irresponsible grandparents). I have a 33 gallon storage tub full of rare model kits. I guess if I live to retire, I'll get around to them.

My wife and daughter do a lot of card-crafting and they persuaded me to take up the hobby again as I had not done anything since '76 or so - not done much so far - just honing up the old skill-sets - completed this last year - 2 odd scale mini kits (a TU144 and an XB70 - I have a "delta-wing" thing) and a 1/72 TSR2 (delta) - incompletes is a 2" Orion (2001), a 1/48 Eurofighter in RAF colours - still hoping for a "tiger" decal to emerge; and a 1/100 Vickers Viscount in 1950's BEA trim (my first flying experience - I also own a window from a scrapped real one - sad but true) - kits pending are the super large Revell Saturn V, the 1/48 TSR2, a 1/72 Concorde...
AMT NCC1701D - The plan is to light up with all the relevant coloured LED's - I have blue and white (redundant Xmas lights) but am still looking out
for some other colours to suit - going to open up most of the windows, light up all the relevant nacelles and engines, bridge, reflector, etc - no rush on this one and will post when starting...

I made some really nice kits, way back - my favourite was a 1/48 F86 in custom RAF camo with shark mouth - the tail was removable, as was the engine and all weapons coverings - Japanese kit, but forget which...

Sure, Vexillology is the study of flags. I have a large(200+) collection of flags, some modern ones from my(and friends') travels, and some old ones from U.S. and Texas history. My oldest being a flag from 1876 celebrating the US Centennial.

With two kids aged under 4yo being in bands is the only hobby I have time for, and compared to the other hobby I'd want to do (golf) is more family-friendly.  Golf would be a deal breaker for the kids, as I'd be away all day, but most of what I do with my bands is at night when the kids are asleep.

And Mark, awesome work on the trains.  Who would have thunk it?

I grew up (as did my dad and grandfather) sailing these boats at YMCA Camp Cory on Keuka lake in the 60's and 70's. They were built by Murray Wright from the 1920's-50's. only 324 were built, most cycled through the camp over the years. I restored my first one around '91 I am on my third now and for lack of few others a repository of information on these boats. In this picture # 97 is in the back ground and seaworthy, the foreground is hull #87 gifted to me last summer and everything you might expect by way of a free boat, it is my mission to bring her back. Might take a while. For me they are a connection to the past(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/K87004.jpg)

Don't do this at home kiddies... I err... I blew up a few... fireworks, decanted, when in season - always came with a handy fuse...

Forgot one... history of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and associated things... family links...

Did you add a few shots there, Scott, or did I scroll down too quickly first time round... there's one of those "types" I didn't know there, wasn't there...  ;D

Those sailing boats are a nice hobby to have - direct family link...

I loved building model cars and planes when I was a kid.  I had many of those same kits.  Stored them in the attic of my parents house in San Antonio back in 1976 when we were stationed overseas.  By the time I got around to getting them out of the attic many years later they were all in sad shape!

I'm more into collecting LP's the last 12 years or so.  I had over 1500 at one point in the 1980's and sold them off by 1990 to pay bills.  I'm back up to around 2K and hit the local Goodwills and SA's as often as I can.  This photo is about 5 years old.

The Hornet is an ongoing hobby.  My late Father-in-law remarked that AMC stood for "A Mechanics Crisis."

I built a 1/24 Airfix, back in the day, when it was a new kit, again with loads of detail and detachables... I saw a Seafire on your shelf - there's a flying one over here, this is her...

I really like this one, too... It was a very windy day and they had to make sure they stayed down - lucky enough to see them form a nine Spitfire "diamond" - seriously cool...

I'd love to get that big Airfix Mosquito kit, but the price is ridiculous...

detailing...?

watch this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIiieWvcRK0

took to long on this... Scott... Hawk Javelin... that IS an old kit... very nice... there used to be one as a "gate-guardian" not that far from here, more 1/1 scale...  ;)

Al... we've looked after what we can, and know where to take those that we can't, seen lots of really sad, cruel things that children and adults have done to them, wings cut off and fox-cubs nailed to trees are minor ones, and we know of much kindness... one site we used to go to used to take in small primates, the damaged ones that people no longer wanted, private owners, and zoos - one was "gay" the person running the site told us - "Michael" was his name, he would only groom "males" - he was let loose, ran over Penny's shoulder (the lady that ran the site), over Jackie's shoulder and straight onto mine, wrapped his tail round my neck, and proceeded to ensure I was "bug-free" - Jackie held his hand and commented how like soft leather it felt - it sent us both cold - I know this will "offend" some, but we gave away our leather jackets that same week - just couldn't wear them again - that was in our early veggie years... we couldn't really do an voluntary work post the birth of Roshina, but we may start up again now she's "of-age" to be involved if she wishes to... I totalled up the "critter-feeders" in the the garden this week - there's over twenty... we have had to budget this, too, so they have to make do with the lesser quality, but then again, we have all had to do a bit of belt-tightening, from time-to-time...

Yep Denis, this thread's got legs...

On the ornithology front, I'm not any kind of "watcher," but I seem to attract rare birds. Even though I live in an urban setting, I'm from a farm in the country, and evidently, the country followed me here. The first day we moved into our house about nine years ago, when I went out the back door, there was a large Redtailed Hawk sitting on top of my garage.  I see them everywhere it seems. I also see Bald Eagles every few months.  Last month, I saw a Great Grey Owl sitting in my neighbor's yard on the ground (at first I thought it was a small dog!) Last summer, a Peregrine Falcon killed a dove in front of me while I was walking down the street, not ten feet away. They are very rare here, but there is a nesting family on a nearby water tower. Also a few years ago for a day, a large pigeon, no exaggeration, the size of a big chicken, just sat on my front porch all day. It wasn't sick or hurt and even let me pet it! It flew off after few hours, and I never saw it again

My best bird stories come from my parent's house: while walking through the woods, I saw a Golden Eagle flying through the trees. Its body looked like a barrel it was so big, and its wingspan was easily bigger than my height of six feet. How it navigated the dense trees was unreal!  They do venture this far east, but not often. Another time, while jogging, I ran into the middle of a flock of  20 or so wild turkeys, who totally ignored me. I stopped and talked to them, and they just looked up and then went on about their busness scratching the ground. I would have stayed with them for a long time, but my dad's fat German Shephard finally caught up to me, and he chased them off.

- 2 odd scale mini kits (a TU144 and an XB70 - I have a "delta-wing" thing)

I have a 1/48 XB70 and tons of various 1/48 versions of the Blackbird, A-12. SR-71A and B, and a 1/48 B-1B unbuilt. I used to have two built 1/48 SR-71A's detailed down to the seatcushions, one in Vietnam era markings and the other in low visibility markings.  The low vis was a thing of beauty until my mother gave it to my then two-year-old nephew to play with as a toy, who did what you would expect a kid his age to do: destroy it completely.  The Vietnam one made out slightly better, but not unscathed. I've got dozens of 1/72 jet fighters, my favorite build was a 1/72 Sea Harrier- they just look classy.  I also have a Revell 1/48 Apache that pissed me off when the glue fumes fogged the canopy- never had that happen before or since.

I have lots of oddball fighters unbuilt, mainly Russian stuff, SU-27s of all kinds including the SU-34 and 37 and some of the Kamov helicopters, as well as the "teen" US fighters, F14's, 15's and 16's ( never cared for the F-18, but I would like a YF-17 and a Super Hornet). I'd love to find an YF-23 model of Northop's prototype that lost to the F-22, and I'd like to find a 1/48 Mig 25 or 31 as well as the Avro Arrow, the plane that made them possible. I'd also like to find Testor's 1/48 F-14D "Black Bunny." The 1/72 F-14A version I find alot; the other, not so much. That's just what I remember off the top of my head. I'm sure I have more stuff in the tub.

Hey- you've got a part. A few years ago, someone sold a vertical stabilizer from an SR-71 on eBay, and it went for cheap, around $100, because no one could afford to ship it! The titanium in it is worth ten or more times that just for scrap.

There is a documentary on Paramount selling off a bunch of Trek props including the ILM models.  The 10-foot Enterprise D went for over $600,000 IIRC. It was the later, lit version. In the early days, every shot was actually a composite of three different models, one for color, one for shadow, and one for lights, and they were smaller, around 6 feet. The big lit model didn't get built until Season 3. Paramount got rid of them because every Trek show and movie after "First Contact" has been all CGI.

I'm a wood worker and mainly build mission furniture but still love the shaker stuff too.  I'm a major geek for for old hand tools especially Stanley and Bailey hand planes - have a bunch of restored planes that I use reguarly.  I'm a constantly do a home renovation or building something - lately its been a library for my wife and I have long list waiting

I love to watch and feed my birds but since I'm in a new neighborhood it's slim pickings - I spent most of last year watching one little male shrike and he left me as soon as a female showed up   I'm also into native plants and plant for the birds and butterflies - I did have a huge number of humming birds hanging about this fall ( almost said hummers but realized that would just get folks worked up  ;) )

well my first love is Skateboarding. shredding since '84. with the scars to prove it. way too many injuries. street, ramp or pool. grinding the lip of a 9' pool is with ya for life. so is falling to the bottom. though now at 37 years old, working 6 days a week and playing in 3 bands doesn't leave me much time. record collecting is another big one for me. but i haven't had much time to hunt lately. a lot of record stores closed down in the last few years and ebay has taken a lot of the fun out it. besides playing in bands i still go to lots of shows. i've also done most of the art work for my bands (record covers, shirts, flyers etc.)and i also have a '73 Triumph bobber that need a shit load of work. this past summer i did a lot of bike riding. (ex-bike messenger) in the past.......i used to surf a lot (Rock, Rock, Rock-a-way beach). and i averaged 25 days a season snowboarding up until 4 or 5 years ago, when all my snowboarding buddies moved away.its not the same with out the crew.
when i broke my ankle in the mid 90's my roomate bought me a model car.and for a while i got really into it. i built a ton of muscle cars and hot rods. but i gave 'em all to a kid in my building when i moved.

Before I got married I collected cars. Over the years I had two '67 RS Camaros, a '69 Corvette Stingray, a '56 Chevy 210 Hard Top, a '67 Cougar, an 82 Mustang GT, an '82 Jeep CJ7, and a '70 Ford Torino. A few bikes as well.

I also liked to do this when I was younger:

I have always been a bird watcher as a child (boy scouts). As of late IU have been trying to photograph them when they visit my yard. See a golden Eagle & Great Grey owl must have been incredible. My brother gets Sand Hill Cranes that visit his yard.

We did that with the other end- both ends burning!

Wow, that's awesome! Hey, Custer was killed at Little Bighorn the same year your flag was made. He came out very much second best...

Mark, EMD used to be owned by GM, right? Aren't EMD marked locomotives generally demos or new models out for testing?

Hey Denis ever been to the Indian museum in Springfield Mass. ? very intresting if you like Indian motorcycles.

I've heard that museum is pretty sweet but have never made it up there to see it. A few years ago some friends rode their Indians up to Springfield for Indian's 100 anniversary and some of them picked up a couple of bricks from the State Street Factory. I wish I had one!

Here's an older pic of the Scout in progress. I have newer pics but I guess they are all on the home computer.

Some of you guys have really cool hobbies.

None of my hobbies are really that creative.
I play on 2 hockey teams and play twice a week, and I ride dirtbikes on weekends through the woods of NC.
I started building basses from billets, but I haven't finished any yet. This was therapeutic until I got real close to finished with a Telecaster bass build and ruined the neck pocket. This happens.
I guess turning our Bonus Room into a Jam Room is an ongoing (and expensive) hobby.  Both of my sons (16 & 11) have started to play music (Guitar/Bass/Vocals & Drums/Vocals). I've had to do quite a bit of research and purchasing of sound gear and instruments.
Their bands tend to practice here a lot, so I figured I might as well make sure they're outfitted properly.
Just bought drum mics and another mixer, so that project is still underway.  Starting to get them started recording their music into the PC. It's hard to believe you can fit this much stuff into an 20'x20' room.
I consider my bass playing a hobby, too.  I'm new to it (a few years), but I love it. It's relaxing, and my only aspiration is to one day get on a stage (or an open mic night somewhere) with my 2 sons.

A pair of Barred Owls moved into the neighborhood a couple of years ago and embarked on reproduction. I couldn't believe all the weird noises they made while courting. On the following Labor Day, the entire family was in my yard. The parents were teaching the chicks (if you can call an 18" tall bird a chick) how to fly and land and whatnot. It was fascinating.
Love the gardens by the way!

What year is your Cota?  Trials bikes are neat, and riding trials requires quite a bit of technical agility and skill.

We mix it up a bit. Brushy Mountain (Taylorsville) is great.  NCMP (Henderson - not far from you) is also fun.  I have 3 riding buddies that have between 25-35 acres each, and that they've cut trails on their land.  Mostly single-track/hare scramble type stuff.  Lately, I've been taking my 16 year old down to Laurinburg to ride at Outback ATV park.  He just started showing some interest, and it's a great place to relax and ride.  I was riding at Leesvile (Durham) this past Sunday in the icy woods, and wadded a chain. The chain tore the slave cylinder (and the guard) right off the casing of my KTM. I'm out until I can fix that mess.

Some serious modeling going on... A nearly four foot XB70 - !!!!! - gotta pic...?

Seen the EF numerous times - I'll post some pics - why the fasconation with the 12/71...?  (the one that flew fastest is over here - posted that pic some time back but will post again...)

the only "live" one I ever saw was the one that set the speed record (now held by Concorde) for the fastest Atlantic crossing in 1974 and displayed at Farnborough that year - I missed the F22 that displayed in '08 but did see the last European appearance of the F117 in '07... got to work on Concorde back in the day... (British Airways from 76-81)

The Viscount window was an "in" family joke - that first flight was a trip to Scotland in the very early 60's with my mother and sister - I ended up stuck on my own by the emergency exit door, with no window - the pilot came back, and seeing my miserable face had a chat with another passenger who swopped - "his" son had the window seat, but at least I could see out - something very magical emerging from grey and wet to blue and white... now, I can always have a "window" seat... ;D (cost £10 at an airshow)

Ther some exceptionally good birdie shots and stories, Gents... There are Peregrines nesting in Central London (all them tower blocks - so many pigeons, so little time... sorry pidgies... :P) and a well known site by the South Coast is Chichester Cathedral, that has had successful peregrine families for several years... never seen any wild eagles here, but Red Kites (a very successful re-introduction) and Buzzards are getting closer to London all the time - signs of a better ecology...

It's a lot of fun and I can ride it in my yard in the city and no one complains! I've never had so much fun going so slow! Henderson is pretty fun although I wish they'd maintain the woods trails a little better. I was out there on the Cota and all these guys on new KTMs were like, "You got that thing way out here through all that mud with those old trials tires? Damn!"

I've heard Brushy Mountain is awesome! Sanford apparently has a nice riding facility too but heck, if your friends have all those acres you're set! Is your KTM a 250? I think some guy on Craigslist Raleigh posted a wrecked one which you might be able to use for parts if it's the same model as yours.

Nice bike!  I love it.  I'm never surprised when I see anyone anywhere on dirtbikes...It amazes me what some folks can get through. It's funny, because of lot of woods/trails guys are swapping their rear tires for Trials tires, especially at the hilly places like Brushy.
I'm supposed to be riding this weekend in Sanford at Devil's Ridge MX Park, but that's just not gonna happen. I usually don't ride MX, but it's an opportunity to ride a good track.  There's a local group (out of Apex or Holly Springs) called "Quarter Throttle", and they try to get folks together to ride at various places.  You should check it out.  There's a couple of pics of my hurtin' little unit, which is a 2000 KTM 200MXC 2-stroke.

Fun stuff, and interesting how a lot of the same things intersect with the bass community.

As a kid I went through a period of model building.  I got into it via a Christmas gift of an Aurora P-47, and my dad had to explain to me what it was.  I got pretty good at it, and gravitated to the Tamiya tanks towards the end.  I did build a few planes with my kid, but I have lost the passion for it.

I was into vintage guitars and basses in the teen years, and kept up with it until the early 90s when it really kept getting out of hand.  It didn't bother me to gradually walk away from it as I quit playing on stage and the days of snagging stuff for less than $300 was long gone.  Lots of memories and a few things sitting in the case are good enough.

I did have a few old cars, and that is another "hobby" that priced itself into the stratosphere.  I don't miss those though.  They became work, expensive, and impractical.

So now I stick to vinyl and stereo stuff.  I was an early bailer on the tube stereo stuff. I saw the same guitar pattern happening, and I sold out for big profit before I got sucked in.  I have a couple of really nice SS units, some great speakers, and too many good turntables lying around. Now is a good time to sell those off too, which I have been doing a lot of.  Turntables - good ones - are hot movers.

I think I just need to get rid of the hobby mindset for a few years.  Talking about basses here is fun, reading about other peoples stuff is fun.  Having stuff that I can't find time for sitting in the basement is getting to be untenable.

Flags, birds, aircraft, cars, boats, vinyl, motorcylces and firebreathing  ;)

Most awesome!

"Mark, EMD used to be owned by GM, right? Aren't EMD marked locomotives generally demos or new models out for testing?"

Yup that's right. SD-45's first demo'd in 1966 featuring a V 20 3600hp engine with 645ci displacement for each cylinder, they traveled the U.S. extensively and generated orders for 1,260 units. There were other smaller locomotives in the series as well, some of which had teething problems for example the GP-40 that suffered from cracks in the underframe with the unit rotating back to EMD for repair work - The demonstrators were still owned by EMD at that point so the were sent out as replacements for horsepower hours lost, such was the case on the Rio Grande, thus my reason for having one plus I really like the metallic blue and white paint scheme  ;D

What are you looking for?  A club deck or a home machine?

There are a lot out there, but getting one that is all there and working is sometimes a trick, including having a good cart which is set correctly.  I have few favorites that bounce back and forth with my mood.  I had a great Thorens TD-166 for years, but I lucked into the classic sleeper BIC 980 and never looked back.

I would be curious as to what turntables do it for guys and gals who still spin the vinyl.

Not yet, but I'll see about digging that storage tub out and doing a photo-inventory. I also need to take pics of my amps. I owe a thread of them elsewhere.

Quote
why the fasconation with the 12/71...?  (the one that flew fastest is over here - posted that pic some time back but will post again...)

... the one that flew the fastest unclassified. In the Sled Driver series of books, the retired SR-71 pilot who wrote them matter-of-factly stated that the Blackbird regularly attained speeds well in excess of Mach 3.5 and actually had to be throttled back at high speeds as the engines became more efficient as they took on more ramjet rather than turbojet properties. Its top speed is still classified, but it's not out of the realm of probability to imagine that it could do Mach 4+, especially since it regularly outran Chinese and Soviet missiles that should have been able to catch it at altitude if all it could do was 3.31, its published "cruising speed."

As for my love for the Blackbird, it's just a mean looking delta that flies like is has a reason to, and when my Dad was in the Air Force during the early 60's, he was stationed at Kadena, Okinawa, where the CIA kept their A-12 before the Air Force had ownership and it became the SR-71. He mainly gassed KC-135's, F-4's, and the odd B-52, but his stories about the flight line shutting down whenever they brought out the Blackbird are too cool.

I love the Concorde, too. Have you seen the documentary on its last flight? I'm indifferent to the F-22, and am probably a bit skeptical about some of its capability claims, same with the "Wobblin' Goblin" F-117. It seems with those planes, rather than push the envelope for performance, they rely too much on technology to take the pilot out of the equation and are basically precursors to a totally unmanned fighter fleet. With the F-117 retired, (shortwave radar's a bitch ain't it?) and the F-22's production (rightfully) stopped, the US is trying to make an F-16 out of the VERY underwhelming F-35 JSF, which is basically a "Stealth Harrier." IMO too much money has been pumped into too many programs that don't deliver, all in the name of politics.  It is with no small satisfaction to note that the Eurofighter was able to get target locks on the F-22 at much longer ranges than thought possible when the US borrowed some for evaluation.  The dogfighting results remain unpublished, but I'm guessing the Raptor fared no better there either. An SU-37 would be even less forgiving.

BTW, saw another Redtailed Hawk today on the way to my ballroom dance class (don't ask.)

Reptiles and CDs. I can unashamedly buy an Air Supply and a Tom Waits CD on the same day, listen to them in sequence in the car and enjoy both. Something is wrong with me, very wrong.

I have a large terrarium with two green iguanas, one black one, a pair of blue-tongued skinks, a spiketail monitor, several tokeh gekkos and two African skink type lizards I don't know the English name of. Reptiles fascinate me, always have.

Now the bottom line first... you don't get off that lightly... "Strictly Bassroom" ...? I am brave enough to say that I did ballroom dancing as a kid (great way to meet girls), and it has achieved new levels of popularity... and it is a hobby, so explain or forever henceforth be known as "Ballroom Dance Guy"  ;D

I was at the end of runway "Nine-Right" ("Two-Seven-Right" for the 2nd last) with my wife and daughter for both the last night flights, the last of which was the subject of that documentary - the main road was blocked (a four lane road) with people and vehicles - hundreds of us waiting for that last chance to see those four Olympus engines in the dark, and that glorious kerosine smell (cue "Apocalypse Now" scene here). The whole day was broadcast on the BBC for the return flight, which I videoed, of course... the sight of the last three Concordes coming into land, one after the other, caused the odd moist eye amongst a few out there, although a few residents of Rockaway Beach raised a glass or two at her demise...

A guy called Jeremy Clarkson (a guest on the last flight) summed it up beautifully, "for the first time in human history we are taking a step backwards, no-one will be able to cross the Atlantic so fast again..." (quote is approximately what he said...) - Concorde's fastest Atlantic flight was an accident - favourably winds ended up with her coming in far too early, which is now the record - never got repeated...

You mentioned KC135's - I was on 707 Major Overhauls... one time we were stripping down a "Dan-Dare" 707, and were suprised when this old guy in green overalls popped his head out of the electronics bay into the cockpit (green was the colour of the overalls the apprentices used to wear) and after noticing he had Boeing overalls on I joked, "Have you been stuck down there since she was built...?" to which he replied with a grin, "Jeez, only Boeing would put toilets directly above an electronics bay...!" (to get to the far end of the bay you had to crawl  under the cockpit, up to the radome, and back round the wheel well to get under the front toilets to some of the electronics compartments...!)

Turntables - mine is a direct drive Technics with (i think) a Shure cartridge - in the loft with the rest of the LPs

This thread is driving me nuts...all my relevant hobby photos are on film I haven't digitized yet (vinyl, vintage 1/24th scale slot cars, high speed open track driving, etc).  Guess slide conversion is going to be my hobby this year.

I have an Epson Perfection 1200 Photo scanner, which although old still is useful for odd sized negatives but I bought a budget (would be <$100) 35mm scanner called a Plustek OpticFilm 7200, which is great at budget level, which came with a useful software bundle (which contains all the drivers, so if you tried to find this it would have to be with discs) - I'd love to have some decent kit to do all mine but the budget just ain't there, and I have hundreds of thousands of pics to scan... btw came with carriers for negs and slides...

We had at least one for a couple years that would light on his hand and grab the peanuts out of his palm. Another would fly up and take one hanging from him lips. I used to laugh when they'd fly into the house or into the loading dock at work and scream for my Dad (which I knew they were doing because they'd stop when they saw him and wait for the peanut). I got a few to take nuts from my hand, but nowhere near as successfully as my Dad was. I miss those days...

These are probably the best 2 Concorde DVD's...

this one has the complete flight crew footage of all but them sitting about waiting to get there, both to and from NY-LON, very techie though...Engine start to shutdown...  8)+

this one is ridiculous - about five hours of stuff, from training touch-and-goes at Shannon to the "Concorde Round The World" trip documentary for a private charter to do just that...

Must have been around 2002 the Concord came to Rochester NY. It was transporting golf pros as I recall. The day it arrived I was on the roof of the Hospital where I worked and watched her fly in. The day she left I called in sick and took my family to the Rochester Inl. Airport and drove the back roads to the end of the runway. The Concord rotated and became air born almost right in front of us..................................... A sight and sound I will never forget.

Ah yes... the best way to see her... that's a cool memory to have... living under the LHR flightpath for almost all my life (although now more distant and intermittent - only for departures), Concorde was a regular for us; Roshina used to run out into the garden and point up at her from about 2-3 years and shout "Concorde...!"

Even when she had been in service for years, pre the accident in France, people would stop and look at her as she came or went... about the only chance of seeing something similar now is a big airshow and hoping for a display by a B1... four turbofans with re-heat... B... E... A... Utiful...

Numerous geeks could be found sniffing the fumes at the end of the runway, myself included...  8)

And Dave, she also made some comment about renaming the site the Last Geek Outpost...  ;D

Err... I hate to tell you this, Denis, but it is quite common for Mallards to nest in holes in trees, and on top of buildings...

Yeah, I know and Wood Ducks do the same. The concept is still weird though.

So, where did all those parakeets come from anyway? We had an indigenous parakeet here in the Carolinas but it's been extinct for a long time.

In Chicago and other cities in the US, wild parrots called Monk Parrots have established colonies in snow belt cities. They survive extreme cold by huddling together in large colony nests.

Native mostly to Argentina and Brazil, one finds it strange how birds accustomed to a more temperate  environment could survive the harsh, blustery winters of Chicago, especially next to Lake Michigan. According to research done at the University of Chicago parakeets were first spotted in Hyde Park in 1973. Records show that by 1979 they were successfully nesting and breeding in the area (Hyman and Pruett-Jones 1995)

The city was deciding if they should eradicate them, because they are an invasive species.

I have a large window in the back of the house.  When we moved in I found I had to stick up cling decals on it to keep birds from playing Stuka with it.  We would occasionally hear a loud thud the first month or so, and quickly found a couple of smaller birds had killed themselves from the impact.  The clings went up after a mallard duck hit it one afternoon.  The window for some miracle did not break but the sound was incredible, as was the large greasy smear it left on the glass.  I watched the duck fly off like Foster Brooks to the neighbor's roof where he sat and rolled around a bit for the next several hours.  He lived, but I suspect they are not as bright as a parakeet.

Now there's an interesting tail...  :P -1950 - the story goes that John Houston needed some birds for the indoor shots that took place in the UK for the "African Queen" (the boat is still in the UK) and a bunch of Indian parrakeets were available; some eventually got loose and settled in the area, and were plentiful... they are now classed as an indigenous species...

EB... a baby 'keet flew into the open doors of our sun-lounge one morning last summer (I opened the doors to cool the place down) and I had to catch it as it got stuck in the blinds, so I took her (the females have no neck ring) down to the bedroom and woke my wife saying lookee what I got... with this very calm bird in my hand... she did take some pics but they are blurry... happily flew off, then started screaming her head off for mum...

We have a colony that is very close to my home - we see them all of the time.  It's crazy to see a hundred bright green birds grubing for bugs and seeds on a huge expanse of freeze damaged brown grass in the middle of winter.

This little guy appeared in our driveway last winter, unharmed. For some reason he waited around while I went inside for the camera, and let me take two pictures from the rear 3/4 view before he rotated his head around with this expression. We hear owls at night, and also have coyotes and foxes in the neighborhood (north suburb of Chicago).

Geez, am I ever jealous!  Our old house was a block away from the creek and was heavily wooded, even though there were houses built along it.  THe neighborhood was about 30 years old so there were plenty of trees.  We did have owls as well - there is nothing cooler that looking into the night sky and seeing an owl, silently, fly over you at about 15 feet.

The flat we lived in when we first got together was in an old part of the town and we had several mature trees... we knew there were owls in the area but never saw one... the last night before we moved here (Feb '92) surrounded in boxes we were both laying in bed and heard a male tawny calling (the classic owl hoot hoot - the female's respond with a "kee-wick") - we both sat bolt-upright and said "OWL!" and sure enough, in the big oak tree in the corner of the garden, there he was, silhouetted in the light, almost as if he was saying "been here all the time..."

If you know you have a specific breed of owl in your area I can teach you a neat trick, if you can locate a recording of the male calling... other tools you need is a night-light (a big torch with a thick piece of red plastic to shine it through will do - if you really want to show off - night-sights...!).
You play the recording on a loud "ghetto box" for a couple of minutes... owls are very territorial, and if a male is in the area, he WILL come to investigate, and then you can do the spotting with the torch without blinding his night-vision...

The monstrous scandal (as far as the RAF is concerned) is what they did to TSR2 (a "sister" to Concorde, and also powered by Olympous turbines) ... when they cancelled the project in '66 they (the Labour Government) ordered the destruction of all parts, all jigs, all information... literally burnt in front of the staff, and the then only flying prototype, XR219, was taken to RAF Shoeburyness and used for target practice...! this was always considered to be "suspect" and the the ordering of the F1-11 made it even more suspicious... (conspiracy theorists abound)

I thought it was common knowledge that the US leveraged the F-111 on the UK because Grumman was floundering under the weight of the naval version of the F-111 and the early failures in the F-14 test program in the early 70's.  Once the early terrain-following radar issues of the F-111 were worked out, it performed quite well for the UK, even with the lesser powered engines than its US counterpart, until the Tornado took over in the role of supersonic strike.

That is cool. I am going to have to play some owl calls, as we have a gray owl flying around at night.  Very disturbing to catch a glance in a tree.  We had a bunch of those smaller brown owls a few years ago.  When there is colder weather up in Blue Bomber territory, they head south a bit.  The problem is they don't get cars and roads, so they get nailed a lot.

You probably have mixed up with the Royal "Australian" Air Force... it is "common" knowledge that someone, somewhere, benifited from the cancellation of TSR2, but if that happened, it is deeply hidden - The "Aardvark" was ordered, but due to issues and delays the order was cancelled, and the RAF went for F4's - these where superceded by the Tornado...

Here's an unusual RAAF F111 landing...

Scott... TSR2 only flew about 24 times, only once supersonically... they looked beautiful... here's some in-flight footage - film is very rare, as most material was destroyed... always reminded me of a bird-of-prey...

For years the F-111 was our main strike aircraft (not that we had anything to strike at during that time), the trouble was the wings kept falling off and the darn things kept crashing.  A very expensive mistake by our defence department.

It's all Mountbatten fault (although he paid the ultimate price) for persuading the Aussie Government not to buy TSR2 and trying to force the Bucanneer on the RAF...

... otherwise, we'd be looking at TSR2's at air-displays and marvelling at the roar of those Olympus engines...

I'm very bad at hobbies. I was the kid who got the airfix kit for Xmas and stuck the two fuselage parts together, with that strangely intoxicating glue, before looking at the plans - and seeing all the other stuff that should be done first. Even my model railway was a misfit, my parents got the rolling stock from a neighbour, it was a Triang set modelled on a passenger train from the Canadian Pacific Railroad. The station was English Airfix and the platform sign said Oakham, which isn't in Canada, as far as I know.

Any Build RC or Cox like tethered planes. I spent a week on this ME 109. On its first flight the engine caught fire & burned to the ground.

At a place I used to work, a guy there built this really cool huge RC Plastic model Tamyia Tiger Tanks. He had it sitting his bench and forgot to turn the tank off. He painted so cool with airbrushed, weathering it etc. The tank picked up a random radio wave and jump off his desk and smashed to bits. He was so mad he just threw the whole thing in the trash.

I used to be in a club that built and raced R/C replicas of Formula 1 cars that used Cox engines. We scratchbuilt bodies and parts that weren't available, or for lighter weight. They would hit almost 40mph. After 100-150 lap races that included refueling stops, we were so pumped with adrenaline!

Not to me. It never looked like a warbird to me, but like the sky eqivalent to a convertible roadster car. Built for speed rather than durability or the ability to bear a lot of arms. I can't really fathom a Starfighter getting an aerial cannon barrage in a dogfight and still making it home like a MIG, Mirage or Phantom possibly could. A racing roadster of the skies, enticing pilots to do things with it they would have never tried with a Phantom. Hence a lot of the crashes as the Starfighter would go from "wow - this flies great" to "I can't control it anymore!" much quicker than other warplanes. Unforgiving of handling mistakes, vitriolic flight characteristics, but apparently huge fun to fly and be silly with.

Available time is the enemy of hobbies.  I guess you could call 10 years of mountaineering a hobby. I know supposed extreme sports are frowned upon by some of us here  so I wont dwell except to say that I (almost) resent Mountaineering being bundled under the same  banner as Base jumping. Regardless it was a hobby I got a lot out of and enjoyed immensly. These days My wife and I both record sightings of less than common birds like the family of Yellow tailed Black Cockatoo's living in an old River red Gum near our house.

Along with our two dogs and spending time with my wife and 5 year old boy Nicholas, work, Music and house maintenance takes up most of my time.

I've been trying to trace a late 60's or early 70's short series that may have been either of the biggies about an android that may not have known what he was - very Phillip K Dick, but I just read it at a cousins house and he can't remember it at all...

... I (almost) resent Mountaineering being bundled under the same  banner as Base jumping.

I jumped out of a plane once (a Cessna 162/172...?) at about 2,600'... well... jumped is the wrong word... had to sit with my legs out the door whilst the engine was throtled back, grab the wing strut, place one foot on a plate above the wheel, lift myself out leaving my right leg trailing in the slip stream with my arms bent, and then look at the jumpmaster and await the command... "GO!" then push my self off... only six seconds of freefall before the tether pulled the chute... the second jump is worse... you know what's going to happen... oh yeah, I landed in the zone, too...

In a past life my brother & myself had a large collection of comics we use to keep in a cherrywood toy chest, one summer while spring cleaning my mother and father decided to throw the chest & comics away. My father had a '57 Chevy he also wanted to get rid of so he put the chest in the trunk and buried the car on my grandparents farm.

Over the weekend I scored a part of one of the Indians I'm restoring. It's the dash panel for the Model 841 shaft drive bike Indian designed to try and get the government contract for military motorcycles during WWII. Unfortunately for them (and Harley and Cushman who each submitted designs), Willys proposed the Jeep.

Here's a pic but I'm almost embarrassed at what I had to pay to get it. at least it still has the data tag and ignition switch (it's missing the idiot lights). In the 11 years I've been collecting parts for this bike, it's only the second dash I've ever seen for sale.

Man, I can't even begin to tell you how lucky I feel to have won that auction! With 3 minutes left some guy put in a huge bid and I spent the next 2 min 55 seconds putting in bids only to find I was STILL too low. I got it with 3 seconds to spare... Indian only made 1000 of those bikes so some of the parts are made of unobtainium so luck has everything to do with it. Indians are a lot of fun to work on but I've really had to change my mindset and how I go about it. For instance, Indian used some thread pitches which were discontinued around the time of the Korean War in order to improve standardization, so some of those good ole SAE bolts I can't find at the hardware store.

I collect and hybridize hosta, and spend as much time as possible on a boogie board.

I have about 200 varieties, and perhaps 8-10 that I have bred and plan to register with the AHS

Short by a lot, since I bought those idiotic Indian parts and these dumb basses!

The truck won't even move out of the driveway by itself and I have no intention of adding a rebuilding to my list of hobbies. I think I'll just pay someone... I'm afraid that it will cost me several thousand unless I get lucky and only the torque converter is toasted.  :P

I don't blame you.  Auto repair is one of my hobbies and has been since 1968 - but I don't mess with automatic transmissions.  I'll take apart a stick tranny and fix whatever's wrong, but automatics are ju-ju to me.

I have hobbies which I devote little time to, but then have a major blast into for a while.

One I gave up on was duplicating the guitars that Slade used to own, very expensive & that's what stopped me. But I do have an SG Junior and a Telecaster both with John Birch mods & also a bass like Scott's also by John Birch. I stopped when my skills didn't justify buying another John Birch (a J1 guitar - like a twin cutout Les Paul).

Then came photography; with a couple of exhibitions, which led onto doing portraits in pencil from photographs which also was mildly successful but not enough to make a living off as I'd hoped.

I'm currently planning out a 1/32 scale diorama featuring a German WW2 Stug Mk3 tank destroyer, since like most here I was crazy about model kits when I was a kid.

It's a 3 speed auto with overdrive. I remember when these trucks were new (it's a '91.5 with an intercooler) my buddy who was service manager at the Dodge dealer told me that reverse was the weak spot on the automatics. I'd noticed that I could go forward if I gave it a LOT of throttle but it wouldn't back up at all, so I figured either the torque converter was fried or I'd lost reverse. Well, I had it towed up to the shop Friday and they confirmed reverse was gone and it would probably cost $1800-2000 to fix if everything was toasted. I'd talked myself into believing it would cost $2500 so I told them to go ahead. Besides, the truck has almost 300,000 miles on it.
Hearing a Cummins turbodiesel pull out of a parking lot right now brings a tear to my eye. I want my truck back.

I love Mercedes Benz oldtimers.

Here's my first Mercedes. A "strich acht" (/8) six cylinder 250 from 1968. This car was built one week after I was born!
And I sold it on the day my first son was born: june 24th 2004.

My second Mercedes. A "strich acht" 280 C six cylinder from 1974. I really love the lines of a coupé.
When I bought it, it had some issues. On of them was the gas pedal that couldn't move. I had to replace it (among other things). When I had it fixed I was so excited to finally be able to really put the pedal to the metal, I took for a quick illegal ride on a quiet piece of highway. The car wasn't insured and it didn't even have it's license put on my name yet... I really put my foot down to the floor and at a speed of 190 kmh (118 MPH) I got overtaken by a Police car!! They didn't even bother about me as they were obviously in a hurry... phew!

I sold it to an action painter who painted it for his wedding.

Here's my current pride and joy: a MB 230CE  W123 from 1982. I bought it in Germany for a very good price. When I brought it to The Netherland its value had climbed with 5000 euro without doing one single thing. 8)

It had all the cop bike appointments but not the siren bracket, so it was originally a civilian model. At some point an Eldorado transmission was put in as well. The previous owner installed the wide bars, but the rest of it was like that when he got it. When I bought it I had been looking for an Eldo, but it was so perfect (to me) that I decided 100ccs weren't going to be a deal breaker for me. :)

One thing I really like about Guzzis is that, other than a few shops in Long Beach, CA, you can still find nice ones for somewhat fair prices. And they run forever if you're even a little bit nice to 'em!

You look really strange in that pink suit, Rob. Or isn't that you? ;)

Talking 'bout old MB's:

My neighbour was a sailor. Captain on a big freight ship and always away from home for over six months. (*) After he left his wife always had men coming over. One of her 'friends' was a big, hairy bearded man, driving old Mercedesses with the vertical headlights like the one above. She had a lot of lovers, but I was always intrigued by this man. When I was like 8 or 9 I asked my mother who the guy in the old Mercedesses was. My mother looked at me and said: 'That's Jan. He's a musician'
She said the word 'musician' as it was soemthing like burglar, hobo, thief, bank robber, .. At that moment I thought it would be a good idea to become musician, driving old MBs and screwing beautiful young sailor's wives;)
Today I drive a Twingo which is more a gay icon than a car and of course I envy Rob! Any relationships with sailor's wives, Rob? :)

That captain lost a leg after a cable on his ship broke loose. It was ripped of. When he came home, with a beard and a fake-leg I lend him my parrot:)

Ehm: Hobbies? Two bands, two cats, writing for some magazines and websites... I read a lot about WWII, I visit a lot of WWII sites like D-Day beaches, battlefields, bunkers, concentration camps and museums. I used to collect 1/18 model cars, but I sold the lot to buy some nice basses.

I coach a lot of young bands around here, just for fun and for free, I organize a festival. Mostly musical things.

I bet it was nice with those wide bars. Never ridden one with them but I sure would like to someday. Ah, yours had an Eldo trans eh? Nice, I'm sure that helped a lot too. A buddy here has an Ambo with an Eldo rear end on it and it's damn quick!
Yes, you're right. You can still find them, even original paint ones for reasonable prices, especially if you are NOT in California, where 100% restored ones can sell for mid teens!

The only thing I'd consider trading my Eldo for is a V7 Sport but no one in their right mind would do that. V7 Sports are awesome!

Bad choice of words on my part! No, I didn't fall off, thankfully. I've done that three times in my life, once on a BMW R90S which I slide down the highway, the second on a Yamaha DT 175, which was a sneaky little 2-smoke, and the third time on a Montesa Cota Trials bike, which took a dump in a 6' deep ravine. I hope that never happens again! I should totally stick with Guzzis!

Seems like I don't have time for any hobbies or music anymore - I'm just keeping up with work, and not doing as good a job of that as I'd like.  I'm hoping to break the string of two weeks with a stiff neck and headaches.....

It's OK.  I've been using the Pinnacle Dazzle units for a few years - they're analog to digital converters that accept compsite or S-video, plus two channels of audio; they plug into a USB port and allow you to import the analog video and audio into a computer or burn it directly to DVD.  The converter boxes work great, and the Pinnacle Studio software version 12 is great.  Version 14 is simply unusable at present due to install problems.  (Wasn't that polite?)

Not much time for hobbies anymore when your working 24/7.

Cool Ducati, seems like the vintage bike market is becoming popular again. I see a lot of guys riding around on restored 70's triumphs, Yamaha's & Honda's. Used to be mostly Harleys.

Nice toys!!  Man I bet that twin-turbo Z will tear your head off.  One of the guys I work with drives just a normally-aspirated G37, and riding to lunch in that thing is like a trip to magic mountain!

This is my vehicular toy - a '38 Buick Series 41 Business Coupe.  I haven't so much as even started it in 2 years, and I dread what awaits me the next time I do (not to mention having to flush out the fuel system first...).  I shoulda been running it periodically all this time (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k125/0chromium0/forums/smilies/icon_doh.gif)

I used to do a lot of work myself on cars - mechanical, interior (even did that as a side biz for a while), and some paint.  Here's a shot of a Buick I had when I was about 20-21.  Don't laugh too hard - I lived in Tucson, AZ afterall.  This was a hot-rod there  ;D  I did the bodywork, interior, and uhhhh.. a bit of suspension work on it!

It had huge scrape-plates on the bottom of it - quite the light show at night!  Ahhhh to be young and stupid.  Got to know law enforcement and the court system well during that time, but hey chicks seemed to dig it :)    (until I'd throw King Crimson in the deck...)

No more time for cars between jobs, school, and family.  Any free time I get these days goes to music and music related gear - that's my hobby now...

Some cool vehicles going on here!  I'm digging Denis's bikes, Pilgrim's ZX and Fiat and Chromium's beautiful coupe.  Not to mention the Riviera.

The Z makes about 420 HP with the turbos engaged but is pretty civilized without them, 30+ mpg @70mph.  I need to get the A/C fixed.

I've found that music is overall less expensive and less hard work than cars and bikes.  If you don't touch a bass for 2 years chances are the most it's going to need is a 20 minute tune up.  Plus not near the depreciation factor.

I have a small collection (three) of wind up Victrolas and many unwanted 78's, most of witch I may never listen to. I find them kinda neat in the fact that you can play it & it sounds exactly as it did nearly 100 years ago. Unlike restoring an old radio & still hearing rap music on it. I recall reading a story about the musicians union objecting to these newfangled phonographs. They were sold as musical instruments, the union must have figured they would take work away from union musicians. It did happen eventually, but not until disco became popular..... >:(

This one is actually a Columbia, the other two are Victrolas

I make or used to make Custom 12" action figures-Steve Austin, the six million dollar man is my favorite and a big seller along with the Prisoner, and Indiana jones. After losing my job as a model maker, I lost my taste for model making. I sell resin heads on ebay from time to time but mainly using the money to buy and build basses. I dig shooting WWII handguns, Flying with my dad who is a CFI in his 1946 Cessna 120, Fishing with my dad and my son in my canoe....haven't done much hunting... Camping...

Pretty much anything left behind or unwanted by people that got wind that I was into this. My grandfather had a duplex for about 50 years, many renters left them in the attic. I ended up with all of them, plus he gave me his personal collection from when he was young. Popular music at that time was marches & opera. A lot of John Phillip Sousa. I would like to get to Chicago & try to pickup more of the blues 78's that inspired goups like the Beatles & many others. Those seem to be scarce. I have a few unplayed Les Paul albums.

Many of those 78's have never been reproduced and it's possible that some of the copies you have are the only ones in existence.

I have one of the Ion A>D turntables and a big stack of 78's.  It's pretty easy to play a 78 on the turntable and use Audacity (free) to correct the recording to the 78 RPM playback speed.

I really, really want to digitally capture the 100+ recordings I have - the issue, as always, is time.

There was, maybe still is, a store that sold 78's locally. It was set up like a store would have been at the time. They always had a dumpster full of unwanted records. Out of thousands of records, they only had one blues recording, Big Bill Bronzy. Most antique stores didn't bother stocking 78's because they don't sell well. A lot of forgotten musical history just waiting to be rediscovered!

A sunny winter afternoon with nice, harsh low angle sunlight and some models, old and recent.

Tho I really just model the Rio Grande in the '60s-'70s I do also enjoy other railroads and make a few models outside my main interest....
Here's a Wabash GE U-25B (quickly dubbed "U-Boats"), this model took a lot work, including fabricating the handrails from brass wire and soldering them together.(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII004.jpg)

And a Pennsylvania Railroad GP-30 locomotive along with an N-8 "Cabin car" (caboose), the railings on their roofs are in fact a primative train radio antennea.   (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII015.jpg)   (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII009.jpg) and with a heavy duty flatcar with a transformer load (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII039.jpg)

And some additions to my Rio Grande layout models.....GP-40s and various rolling stock, some of which are beautiful models that require very little work - these are usually made in China from fantastic CNC diework and feature faithful detail.
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII024.jpg)(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII025-1.jpg)
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII027.jpg)[/IMG](http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII030.jpg) And a nasty, rusty Great Northern boxcar....At least no one has chalked a pecker onto "Rocky" the Goat!(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII031.jpg) Since every direction is up on the Rio Grande a "helper locomotive" behind the caboose(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trainsII/trainsII036.jpg)

It's the attention to the detailing that does it for me, even to the surroundings and backdrop...

Do me one favour please Mark - could you put up something scale-wise against one of those that would give a true dimension - I vaguely remember you posting something about how you set scenes but scale eludes me...

Denis, I'll go out on a limb here and guess you like the tradition "Empire Builder" scheme as opposed to the later "Simplified" or "Big Sky Blue.......... I'm finding my Proto 2000 GP-30s are needing a lot of work to get them layout ready, the gearsets on the axles split! I'm rebuilding them with Atlas GP-7 motors and trucks for better compatibility with my Kato and Atlas locos.
Kenny, next time I shoot I'll get some 1:1 scale objects into the pic for you but as a quick reference they are H.O. = (half O scale) scale 12" = 87 feet or 3.5mm per foot. Most models are around 7-9" long.

Hard to beat that orange/green combo with yellow stripes and lettering. I need to check which ones I have (been a long time since I looked at them, but I've had them at least 10 years. And yeah, I've heard that it's wise to replace some of the axles on those things.

All Gerry Anderson stuff (Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90, XL5 and Supercar)

Yep, spotted it... I should drag my stuff back out of the garage and finish what I started, but ain't that the story of my life (sourced my LED's for my NCC1701D project and my superdedooper scale Saturn V got looked at again recently) but I'm stalled on a Eurofighter (still desperately hopeful of a Tiger-Meet scheme) and a Viscount (BEA  sixties colours - first aircraft I flew on) - I keep looking out for a set of decals for the Dutch F16 30th anniversary - saw her and just drooled...

I would like to say Ho Hum same as usual Mark!  But AS USUAL I am forced to go through each pic and stare in amazement at not just the detail but the lighting. Great stuff.

Fantastic job all around, Mark, both pix and rolling stock.  You make it look too easy!

 Thanks guys!

Building models really is a simple joy for me I can get lost in it for hours if I'm left unattended  ;D
The pictures are surprising simple as long the sun is out and a clear horizon is available.

The Penn Central car was a real challenge, the kit is a resin casting with beautiful etched metal parts and a good instruction sheet, these are just a couple shots from construction.

All the parts pretty much on, ready to paint.

Painted, a very glossy P.C. green, ready for waterslide decals.

And one side done.
