Although the Flying V is initially planned to come out in cherry with white pg this year, my Gibson contact tells me they are considering other colors for next year and would like some ideas ...

I'm unable to vote due to the lack of the one finish I'd like to see on a Flying V: natural mahogany with white pg.
-
Why must you always insist on being difficult, Denis?
Revote again please ...

I was kicked out of class a lot as a kid...

Hah, I see my suggestion has 36% of the votes thus far. Perhaps I should work for Gibson and improve their bass offerings.
-
I have gasped :o at that as well but put it down to you having multiple identities here and voting over and over secretively.
I am not fooled.
-
I want to change my vote to Denis's suggestion. Natural hog is too cool (and sadly, probably too expensive for Gibson.)
-
Cream & white get my vote
-
I voted for
Cherry & black
Creme & white
and the Denis Special
-
I voted for creme, silverburst and midnight blue, all with black pickguards. Not that I think any of this will happen.
-
Hey...Why wasn't White Limba (Korina) listed????? With either a B/W/B or Parchment/Black/Pachment pickguard??
-
ALL Gibsons should be available in cherry. ;D
Natural would have a cool 50s vibe, though korina would be better.
Silverburst is cool. A guy I used to play with had a '78 V (guitar) in that finish.
-
scroll down and check out jack's manly v.

Cream/White
Silverburst/Black (I too played with a guitarist who had that finish on a "V")
Denis Special (In lieu of Korina)
-
I miss my 1966-67 Guild Jet stars Terribly. Liked them ALMOST more than a Thunderbird.

Dang! Disqualified on two out of three counts!

surf green, black guard, black hardware

I wonder if Gibson really uses genuine mahogany (Honduran) or if they use Sepel?

If they were using genuine mahogany they'd tell you.
-
I vote for pink, I'd like it to have a white fur lining also please.

Whatever it is, I doubt it's sapele, while it's from the same family it's never been called a mahogany. Would Gibson risk that kind of misrepresentation on their flagship line?
A few years ago the guy at Gallery Hardwoods said that what's being sold as genuine mahogany is not Honduran, it's actually big leaf mahogany from Brazil, and also said that there aren't any commercial amounts of Honduran available.
Gibson could be getting plantation-grown real mahogany from somewhere far away from Central or South America. They could be using khaya (so-called African mahogany). Or they could be using mahogany from Brazil and just not saying so. Sometimes old catalogs didn't specify Honduran. Carlo may be on to something though, if it can be called genuine or Honduran, why not say so?

Agreed. And put a Lucite one in there as well. ;D

Honduran Mahogany is a protected species. As far as I know it is prohibited to even sell it.
Any guitar company who claims to use Honduran mahogany in new guitars is lying.
-
Blue or black with white pg
First choice would be cream with black pg though...
Did someone mention fur lining...? ;D

Owl Lumber near me has a large bin of Honduran Mahogany, they had some really large furniture building size planks.

I'm use Swietenia Macrophylla, by law the only genuine mahogany. Commonly referred to as Honduras Mahogany. Approximately $10 USD per board foot, 6 ft per body. Lull uses the same species.

It's not prohibited by CITES, though it is regulated (http://www.worldwildlife.org/what/globalmarkets/wildlifetrade/faqs-mahogany.html).
Swietenia macrophylla is big leaf mahogany, commonly called Honduran even though apparently little or none of it has come from Honduras in years. It's possible that the country of Honduras prohibits exporting it, but Swietenia macrophylla is definitely available from some countries.
-
Since mahogany from Honduras is prohibited, the species Swietenia Macrophylla (and known as Honduran Mahogany) is plantation grown in many Asian countries. It is a fast growing tree and has become an invasive specied in the Philippines.
-
I votes mahogany, but cream would be my second choice.

Gorgeous piece of mahogany

Is a reverse V going to be an option? Bwahahaha!
-
Don't laugh, it sold so unexpectedly well at the time, they did another, larger run. And due to the wood wings going into the neck direction it probably would sound better as a bass too. Of course the look is self-defeating unless you are either Rick Nielsen or play with Devo.
-
How about a "twisted" V - upper trad and lower reverse...?
(ok, back in my box... :P)
-

But.....but.....that would be a "Y".
:o :o
Or maybe it's just left-handed?

Believe it or not, Gibson already built those...

The Z or Thunderbolt :o

You probably photoshopped that, Rob, but you know what? I find it friggin' cool, would buy one in a heartbeat.
-
Rick Nielsen has one (surprise...).
-
Cool as hell. Straight from a "The Jetsons" cartoon. I really think it is a cool shape, why did no one think of it earlier?
-
It would balance good too, due to that long-horn-eye-poking-thingie.
-
And you can play it both ways, it always will look cool! Now how many other basses can do that?
-
Both ways? You mean upright and horizontal?
All it needs is an end pin.

You know better than to make posts like that around here, Dave. Especially the "end pin" part.
-
Coming from behind to pin the end I do like how the neck bows gently forward. Nothing to leave unplugged though.
-
Uwe you're hell bent for leather...

I make a perfectly innocent comment about an endpin and look what happens. I didn't even say anything about screwing it in.

Perfectly innocent, my eye. That post was rife with typical Outpost sexual innuendo (no pun intended):

Looks like those came from a Dr Who out-take.
