[IMO, this should apply to prop guitars too]

It should also apply to Kyle Busch, who smashed a brand new Gibson LP, designed/painted/hand-delivered by Sam Bass.
Gibson and Sam Bass apparently collaborated for months on this fully functional trophy (a trophy that used to be coveted by drivers).

What a friggin' punk.

This thread just reminded me one of the reasons why I have always detested Kiss and totally loathed Nirvana.
Overrated theater.

John Doe (X) and Craig Bloxom (Spy V. Spy)
John Doe's voice is just amazing, and Bloxom could belt it out with the best of 'em.

2 of my all-time favorites.  Actually, going to see X tomorrow night in Chapel Hill, NC.

Depending on where you live, Craigslist is a decent place to sell stuff as well.
Cash only transactions and you save the hassle of shipping items.

My .02...I recommend meeting the prospective buyers somewhere else other than your home.
Better to be safe than sorry.

I've bought lots of pedals and several basses, amps, etc. using Craigslist.

The Bass Zone / Re: Types of Bassists

Well, since I've been so welcomed on LBO, I'll chime in:

I'm a beginner.  Picked it up about 3 years ago, and practice a few days a week for about an hour or so.  It's all I have time for, unfortunately.  On the plus side, it (the act of playing bass) as far exceeded my expectations and is one of the joys I have in my life.  I don't read music, but I'm tenacious about trying to learn to play by ear.  I took a half dozen lessons or so.

I really don't have any dreams of the next level, but I would love to, at least once, play bass along with some guys just having some fun and playing music together.

The Bass Zone / some questions about stage amplification/live sound
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:03:21 AM »
I just don't understand live sound as well as I should, I'm sure you guys can straighten me out.

When you go to a show and you see a wall of cabinets, just how much of the overall sound is actually the bass/head/cab and how much of it is the PA System?
If a sound guy has your cabinet mic'd to run through the house PA, the audience is actually hearing the qualities of the PA System, not the instrument/head/cabinet, right?  Sound guy usually says "leave your amp at n level, and I'll boost the gains through the board".

What would it matter then if I just brought a small combo amp, if they're just going to mic the speaker and raise the gain to optimal levels for the house anyway, right?  I mean, I have small SWR combo that has great tone, and I can pick it up with one hand.

If my assumptions are even close to correct, then why would anyone lug a high end head and pair of 8x10's to a gig?  A more relative question is: why spend the money on amp/cab when the sound guy is pumping it through the PA System anyway.  I know that there's a lot of tonal qualities tied to the bass itself, pedals,amp/cab, but how much of those tonal qualities are then brought to the capabilities of the PA System?

See, I'm trying to help my son's band out as much as possible without being obtrusive to the music they choose to play or write. I'm trying to spend money as wisely as possible in an effort to help them get started.
They've played a few small gigs, and have more on the horizon.  So far, it looks like spending money on a huge backline doesn't make any sense at all.  A small (400W or so) PA System (for bars, coffee shops, etc) appears liek a better place to spend some amplification cash.

I may need to be set straight by you guys, so have at it.

"Ack, how nice are the necks on those Dean Edge basses!"

Spot on. The neck rivals anything I've ever played, and the passive EMG's are truly awesome. It's just a really good all-around bass, and I think I paid like $150 with a HSC for it at Music-Go-Round. In my eyes, a completely underrated bass.

If you ever get a chance to play one of the ESP LTD's, pick one up and play it.  It's another real comfortable bass with an amazing neck.

I'm going to try and post a few pics of my basses.  I just sold the Samick RLB4 Hollowbody in the picture.

Cheers.

"So what is your collection of cheapos?"

Dean Edge-1 - basically my first bass - I don't ever see me getting rid of it
Fender MIM P
Fender MIM P-Special (P/J)
G&L L2k Trib (my personal favorite)
Yamaha RBX 270
ESP LTD B254
Danelectro '63 RI
SX '62 Jazz w/ Audere Pre
Gretsch Electromatic shortie
Turser 401 - '56 P-bass clone

They all get used, as my 15 year old has just started playing bass in a band with some friends. He can't seem to put down the LTD.

"I see Fenders in that avatar!!!"

Yup, just a couple on Mexicans hangin' on the wall...

No bass prejudice here whatsoever, though. I seem to like most everything I pick up and play.
I've started quite an array of cheap basses that I'm somewhat proud of.

Thanks for the replies.  I think I've found a new home.
This is like walking past that "special" classroom and suddenly understanding that you belong in there with them.

Now, which one's the E string again?

Uwe: Silly question. It's of course the string where your guitarist once you to play all the time.

I like it here already...and I like wise-asses (...just happen to be one myself).
My rockin' chair has been recently serviced, and I'm ready to roll...

The Bass Zone / Bass Player Forums - a gripe
« on: March 10, 2009, 11:08:39 AM »
I don't post very often, but I need to vent.
It's probably me...Since I picked up the bass at the ripe young age of 45, I've tried several different forums in order to get some different insight & perspective, some answers to some (usually general) questions and basically broaden my knowledge about bass guitar.  Like most folks, I've been listening to music all my life, and I've had an affinity for the bass since I heard Roundabout for the first time. In my lifetime, I have tried to play piano, guitar, drums, etc. and have failed pretty miserably at all of them. It has been quite a struggle for the past 3 years to get where I'm at with the bass guitar: loving it...struggling, but not failing.

Baasists: My own preconceived generalizations
I've always pictured bassists as the kind of people who can piece together their instrument with tape and wire, turn it up real loud and thunder away, holding the band together.  I know, there's much more to it than that, that's just always been the image I've had:  barefoot, jeans, t-shirt, thunder, a wry smile, in their own little corner of space.  The kind of folks who were easily approachable and eager to help out - it's what they do.

I'm utterly disappointed everywhere I turn in bass forums. For the most part, the forums are filled with egomaniacal types who constantly need to demonstrate just how great/smart they are, and how people with differing opinions are just not informed/skilled enough to have any worthwhile insights.  It's really frustrating, but I had a completely different view of bass players before I joined my first forum.  I don't really like posting, but I'm constantly reading threads, and the majority of those threads have topics that really interest me...until I read them. The Internet has provided us all with a tool that allows us to unleash whatever venom reaches our fingertips.  I'd guess that 99% of the venom that's spewed out on these forums would never be uttered face-to-face.  I always like to check the profiles of some of the folks who can't help but trashing each others.  Surprisingly (if you believe their own profiles), some of the biggest offenders appear to be the most accomplished musicians (OK, folks with an array of expensive equipment who earn money playing bass). I know things are not what they seem when I read some trashers signature and it lists "Christian Bassist Club member #456"...yeah, Ok.

People will say that it's just the way society is today, and unfortunately, that appears to be somewhat truthful. I guess that I was hoping that bassists and cockroaches would be the lone survivors of an Earth that was eventually ruined by greed, ego and selfishness. I guess I'm disappointed because I've always felt like a good judge of character, and in the case of bassiss, I was making that assumption based on my own ethereal notions of what I thought bassists would be like.

Having said all that, there have ben quite a few unassuming, very helpful folks on these forums.  I wish they outnumbered (or typed faster than) the egomaniacs.

Sorry about the rant (and any spelling errors).  I needed to get it out and start over.

Steve
