Gibson Basses / Re: The market is down for old Epiphones
« on: November 07, 2009, 06:10:22 PM »
I saw the '62 Newport from Craigslist today, the owners were walking it around a local musicians swap meet. It was a nice bass, still a far cry from being worth $3,000.00, at least to me............. :D

Looks to me that most of it is origional, with the exception of the pickup & replacing the baritone switch with a toggle switch, Time will tell.............. Nice color, I haven't seen many Gibson in that color, a few Birdlands maybe...........

After many years it grows into your finger like barbwire in the bark of an old tree, at that point it can't ding your bass! I'm lucky to have a wife that has put up with my GAS for 32 years! ;) ;)

Gibson Basses / Re: Uwe! Gibson 20/20
« on: October 26, 2009, 02:59:58 PM »
I recieved an answer from Walter Carter first thing this morning on how many 20/20's he thought were produced................... His response............

"My guess would be a dozen or so. I think I’ve only seen two."

I was guessing more like 200, it might be one of the rarest Gibson Basses due to it's unique style!
I know of five or six including the three on this board. Here is a picture of it next to it's equally odd partner, the 1985 Gibson Futura.

Jules...........Nice spread of your 20/20 on your web sight!! Looks like it cleaned up nice!! Is there any record of how many of these were produced in both colors? Walter Carter seems to know some of these totals after 1979. If he's still at Gruhn's Guitars, I'll try to email him.  :-\

Gibson Basses / Re: 1959 EB-2 Capacitor Question...
« on: October 23, 2009, 04:08:13 PM »
Thanks for the info! I've also wondered if a previous owner may have cut the wire to change the sound a bit... A fifty year old bass is bound to have a couple stories to tell.  :P :P

Gibson Basses / 1959 EB-2 Capacitor Question...
« on: October 22, 2009, 06:15:24 PM »
I have a 1959 EB-2 one of the early ones with a single coil pickup. Through the "F" hole, I notice years ago that it has two sprague capactors twisted together, soldered to the tone control. One of the wires is broken off of one of the caps, possibly because they were twisted together too tight. I always wondered how much difference it might make if I tried to repair this. Being my oldest bass, I've always figured I'd better leave well enough alone. It sounds good as is, how much better would it sound with both capacitors?  ??? ??? ??? :o

A few years back I bought a NOS circuit on eBay, don't think it cost much more than twenty bucks... ;D

I never had an Ovation Magnum, just tried it several times as it showed up in local stores.

Gibson Basses / Re: LP Sig vs. JC Sig
« on: October 16, 2009, 01:45:14 PM »
"So I guess it's very likely the Lo-z Gibson Les Paul Guitar pickup would also do the somewhat lame JCS a big favor too."

One would think a LPR pickup would be much better than many pickups on the market today for bass. I have seen many eBayers trying to sell NOS guitar pickups as bass pickups. They were even sold in boxes right out of the Nashville warehouse labled Les Paul Triump Bass.
Does anyone know what the differences are between the bridge pickups & the neck pickups? The 1977 Replacement Parts Catalog lists both the same for the LPR (#13557) where as the 1981 catalog lists the back as a #13689. The LPT has a front as #13555 & a back as #13560. I have never seen any markings on any of these to tell them apart. Maybe the only difference is wire length???  ??? :bored: :bored: :bored: :bored:

I think it was a late 70's Ovation Magnum that made my RD feel light.
