He was more than slightly deranged, Uwe... Unfortunately he suffered with "bipolar disorder"/"manic depression" - one of his worst "known" events was one time he went after a few members of Hawkwind with a weapon of some kind, chasing them down the road (on a US tour?), with the full intent of causing harm...
He may well have been gay but he left behind some family, married at least 3 times and I know he had a few children...
This is a reasonable link with a potted bio...
http://www.aural-innovations.com/robertcalvert/calvertbio/calvertbio.htmI have an excellent (BBC4) hour+ long Hawkwind special that details the "incident" - I'm a big fan of Calvert, which only grew after getting "Captain Lockheed" when it was released, way back when... and the early Hawkwind material; never saw them with Lemmy but did see RC on the "Atomhenge" tour - First had "Motorhead", resplendant with it's violin solo, on the b side of a 1974 single ("Kings Of Speed" - I wonder why they linked "speed" and "Motorhead"...
) that I bought when it came out... a big fan of Mr Kilmister, for my sins too..
