The Outpost Cafe / Re: Any Beer drinkers here?
« on: February 27, 2010, 04:16:58 PM »
Our favorite from New Belgium is Trippel - akin to the heavenly nectar of Trappist monks. We like everything they do and maybe should consider retiring nearby.

A new find is Southern Tier Brewing Co. in Lakewood, NY (upstate) near my hometown.  Our favorite is Iniquity Black Ale, and a holiday brew called Krampus. They have many other unusual ones we haven't tried yet.

Then there is Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland. The Edmund Fitzgerald Porter is great, as is the t-shirt design. Their line-up is a bit more "serious" I would say.

I love a soothing Guinness on nights when we're gigging!

One solution for anyone concerned about runaway acceleration: manual transmissions. Try to find one. Even if manufacturers offer them on paper, dealerships seem to order all their stock with automatic slushboxes. That's "I enjoy my latte and cellphone" America for you.

Question for the woman testifying today: if she claims her Lexus was bombing down the expressway at 100mph for six miles and could not brake...how was she able to make a cellphone call to her husband? That was her thought instead of turning of the ignition? Then she said it was "the hand of God" that stopped the car. Sounds like a clear admission she totally checked out from operating the vehicle.  This woman sounds dangerous behind the wheel, whatever car she drives.

One last dig...most Lexus, Camry, and Land Cruiser drivers in these parts are moving roadblocks. They suffer from unattempted acceleration, so I can see how anything involving speed would send them into shock.

Sounds good to me. Wondering how my Decade with Dark Stars would sound (and feel) thru that rig.

Don't you just love irony? Operating instructions should read: "Leave engine running until global warming ensues and snowfall is greatly diminished. Depending on where you live, it may be necessary to attach the optional impeller assembly to pump flood water from your basement, or to extinguish brush fires. Finally, complete Carbon Impact Declaration Form AG2012.pc and surrender to authorities".

Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson Facing Price-Fixing Lawsuits

Huh? I've used local dealers for 30 years that beat GC prices and MAP prices as standard practice, without "I have to ask my manager" shenanigans. The internet has made it easier to find even more places to find a deal. Isn't it incumbent on the buyer to shop around?  Shopping around is short-circuited if GC orders a special model or color only available in their stores, but that's not price fixing.

Interesting. 10,000 Maniacs and Steve G. are from my hometown. Over a 15 year period I only ever saw him play Guild Pilots on stage.

I like how he's making more of them, in different keys.  Imagine the load-in nightmare at the coffee house,  compared to harp players who can bring all their harps in one tackle box, or guitarists who just move a capo.  Truly a Gary Larson cartoon yet to be drawn.

Ah, did not realize you made that change. We're in similar straights...merged two offices in December to save overhead. Good to hear you weren't trying to catch a red-eye after the snow disrupted flights.

You were in the shower at 4:00am?

What's odd is that 11:00pm, five hours prior to the quake, my wife and I both heard a weird single burst of sound that seemed eerie and supernatural. We were at opposite ends of the house but both heard it equally as loud. My wife was genuinely frightened. A search revealed nothing out of place and no tracks in the snow around the house. We're still not sure what to think, but if the quake had woken us up, we probably would have freaked out.

+1 to knocking down the gloss with steel wool. 00 leaves a velvet-y feel; 0000 is more polished.  Just refinished a parts bass neck today with three coats TruOil followed by steel wool each time. For the fretboard I use Howard's Feed n Wax (beeswax and orange oil).

A few guys on the Lakland forum did this with their Skylines. The factory advised using light coats of tung oil.  Burnish with a cloth or very fine steel wool in between.  Tru-Oil on the other hand is more like a varnish, will dry hard, and will build up layers - probably not what you want for a velvet-y feel.

Hesitant as I am to raise the spectre of my old TR7, the throttle on that often stuck and, despite many attempts it was never fixed. It just made approaching junctions more exciting.
One of my on-track students unlatched his harness as we were flying down a straight with a 90-bend approaching, with swamp land beyond if you missed. He was trying to bend down and pull up a stuck throttle but his helmet wedged against the steering wheel. He eventually got his toe under it. By that time I had already popped him into neutral. The competitive bloke didn't want to mess up his lap time, so pulling it out of gear never crossed his mind. It was funny after he parked it.

Once the government has all drivers under full surveilance, more hair-raising stories will come to light.

I avoid that problem by drinking my boiling hot coffee out of open-topped mugs while driving...  ;D

What happens to the brakes is that wide-open-throttle, coupled with the panic reaction to pump the brakes, depletes the vacuum booster. Standing on the brake pedal and keeping it there would probably not deplete vacuum, but very few drivers (maybe 1%-3%) have a motorsports perspective that would result in applying enough brake pressure immediately.
