My next bass on tap, a 2" fat basswood body with a fancy mahog top.  More on that as it progresses.

Here's my first run with the pin router.  I'm going for a big body, 2" model, with a fancy top.  It worked really well.  The first cut was smooth and the second cut is a bit off because I suspect my router mounting plate is out of alignment by a few hundredths of an inch on one side.  Gotta work on that.  Nothing a little sand paper can't fix for now.

I was rummaging thru a storage box and found my old pin router that was always a PITA to set up.  It has this nice mechanism for holding one of four different pins and is retractable for moving pieces in and it.  So, I enlarged the mounting hole to accommodate it and put some thumbscrews in to hold it in place.  Really nifty now!

To improve cutting and reduce burning/tearout, I bought a double compression 1/2" bit that cuts upward and downward simultaneously.  It did a great job and no burns or other cutting issues.

Glad you approve!  At least I've got the real thing in hand to do some templates and measurements.  I'm probably going to do  34" scale as the short scales have limited markets these days and the necks are a pain to build.  The body is actually small and I'll probably add a 1/2" or more all the way around to beef it up a bit for the longer neck.

It's true Kustom amps used to get all the attention.  But if I ever ran across a Kustom bass like that now, I'd be very interested.  I love stuff like this.  Just the retro vibe itself is cool, but if it sounds good, too, I don't know what more you could want.

I agree.  I love vintage basses and their look, but when they play well and sound great, it's really a special treat.  I had three Cornados and two Mosrites that looked cool but sounded like they were made out of wet cardboard.

Thats really cool, how many were ever made I wonder. The headstock kinda reminds me of Hagstrom.

Hard to say how many.  Their basses didn't sell well from what I've heard.  Also kustom's amps were their main successful product line.  I did some searching online and didn't find much.

Those are nicer than I remember.

Yes,  it's nicely built and well finished.  I especially like the wood working on the body and neck.  The pickups are really strong compared to other old DeArmonds I've had in Coronados and the like.

She's got more jiggle going on than nine cats in a gunny sack! ;) ;)

I like it!  8)

But you really oughta play surf with it....

Cowabunga, dude!  :toast:  I know it has RIC and Mosrite roots, of sorts.  I don't recall seeing them back when I was a kid, even on TV.  I do remember the Mosrites because of the Ventures.  Everyone I know played Fender or Gibson basses.

I've grown to like the styling only in recent years while seeing them on eBay!

Yeah, I always liked the pointy upper bouts and the HB design with the one f-hole.  They sort of looked a little RIC-esque in their design.  They just never really caught on.

Here's a nice brief history of the Kustom guitar company from Kansas.

I have decided this will be my next bass model.  A knock off of this body shape..............using my build method, headstock and set neck.

I've been gassing for one of theses for years and finally saw one I liked that wasn't teal green or beat to death.  It's trans red and in very good condition with minimal checking.  The bass plays and sounds great.  Nice short scale neck and fantastic pickups.  The 3-way switch gives it a great variable tone with a simple flip.

I can't say enough about the pups.  They are so much better than I expected.  Nice deep low end and plenty of mid and high range output.  I've had numerous vintage basses disappointment with their electronics after owning them.  Mosrite is a good example.  Had two of them and the pups really underperformed in every aspect.  In fact, they sucked.

Anyway,  I love this little guy!  I highly recommend one.

All went well at Johns Hopkins.  They want me to do a couple more chemos here before we move onto a different therapy.  Fortunately, they don't feel things are as bad as we recently thought.  That was good news!  Our docs here are very conservative and tend to panic if things don't go as they expect.  So, we'll do some more treatment here then send the results down to JH for their analysis and follow up.

Meanwhile, I'm feeling fine, till the next treatment on Friday.  Ugh!

It would look nice in front of my couch.  A good place to put our drinks.  Seriously, it's beautiful but a bit over the top, especially pricing.  If you got the bucks, splurge!  Otherwise, it has a very small market.
