Rickenbacker Basses / 4003S/8 horseshoe vs high gain
« on: February 26, 2012, 02:17:49 PM »
This is a little medley of classic rock riffs played on my 4003S/8. First with a new, reissue horseshoe, then with the stock '93 high gain. I never solo the treble pickup, but for the sake of this comparison, I did. Pretty damn close in tone. What do you guys think? Bonus points to name all the tunes!

Rickenbacker Basses / facebook and the Ric Police
« on: January 27, 2012, 11:12:21 AM »
A nice fella named Mark recently started a Rickenbacker appreciation group on facebook. There are now around 1100 members. It was going nicely... THEN the company started giving the page owner grief about trademark, blah, blah, blah. SO, they agreed to add a couple of Ric employees as admins. NOW they're deleting posts and members at will should anything negative be said about the product. I have much more to say about it, but I'll keep that to myself. I've contacted several "regulars" from the group and told them about this place. Maybe we'll get more activity here? Maybe not...  :)

The Outpost Cafe / Cheap Trick Dream Police show (current)
« on: October 11, 2011, 07:59:09 AM »
Took the wife up to Milwaukee this past weekend to see Cheap Trick perform the Dream Police album in its entirety, with a small orchestra. They were outstanding! Original members Rick, Tom, and Robin were joined by Rick's son Daxx on drums (he's been filling in for Bun for a while), his other son Miles on backing guitar and vocals, their usual touring keyboardist (don't recall his name), small string and horn sections with conductor, and 4 backup singers. I'm usually not a fan of the "adding lots of extra people to the 4 piece rock band" (the Who, Pink Floyd), OR the rock band + orchestra thing, but this really worked and made complete sense. Everyone sounded GREAT! Nielsen's guitars, Tom's 12 strings, and Robin's voice - wow! There are very few that can sing like this guy EVER, and here he is at 58 years old knocking it out of the park. I've seen some recent YouTube clips that sounded like he might be losing it, but Saturday was near flawless. Tom played most of the first set (Dream Police) on the Electrical aluminum 12er, with a couple on the rhinestone encrusted Waterstone 12. Most of the second set (misc. hits and favorites) was a Lull T-bird with a neck pickup instead of a bridge pickup, and a reverse headstock. This one was less spectacular sounding than the 12ers. I love the neck pup concept, but I think it could benefit from a third one in the stock bridge position. Bottom line - if you're anywhere near one of these shows, GO! It was a great time, and there's not a bad seat in the house.

Rickenbacker Basses / Sound O Ric
« on: October 05, 2011, 01:53:11 PM »
I recently had the pleasure of adding bass tracks to a project called Lunation. Their album "Restless" was released yesterday, and I'm REALLY happy with the results. Half the tracks were already finished (with keyboard bass) when I came on board, but I got to do my thing on seven tracks, including:

3. Unscrupulous
5. Wash All Over You
8. Confusion
9. I'm Still Alone
10. One of Some
11. A Different Day
14. Restless

3, 5, and 10 are the 4003S. 8 is my 4001CS. 9 and 11 my Kramer fretless, and 14 my Guild Pilot 5 string. We utilized Dropbox to exchange files, and I did everything on my Pro Tools rig at my house. Gotta love technology! I ran everything but the fretless through a Sadowsky pre amp for some bass and treble boost, and tracked with a Chris Lord-Alge compressor plug-in insert. You can hear samples at the link below. Thanks for listening!

Bass Amps & Effects / Bass combo amps
« on: April 22, 2011, 11:39:57 AM »
I'm thinking of getting a nice combo for certain gigs. Probably a 2x10 or maybe 1x15. Minimum 300 watts. I played through a SWR Redhead years ago and thought it was pretty great. Those can be found used for around $700. Anybody have any experience with the Ashdown MAG C210-300? FYI - my amp is really nothing more than a floor rumbler at this point as I am running a DI off my pedal board and using in-ear monitors. However, I still want it to sound good and rock the house!  ;D

The Bass Zone / New cover band
« on: April 08, 2011, 09:32:35 AM »
So I finally got this new thing off the ground. Band is called Afterglow. Format is a lot of current dance pop hits along with some retro favs that you kind of have to do in cover band land. But NO Jessie's Girl or Bon Jovi! Don't worry, we have some equally bad stuff in their place.  ;) I gotta tell ya, this dance stuff is no walk in the park. It's a lot more work than banging out Zeppelin and GnR covers. LAYERS of keyboards and vocals to sift through, sort out, and distribute among band members. We don't use any backing tracks. We're actually chopping up and medley-izing a lot of the stuff. I'm using a LOT of octave divider, and a cool synth effect on my Digitech Bass Synth Wah pedal. We're adding a lot of fire to the songs, but not really metal-izing them. It's a fun challenge, but again, a lot of work. We've been getting some great opportunities thanks to our booking agent. First show was at the end of January, and we have 7 shows in April.  ;D As Denis said - wish me luck! Web site is up. There are a few bugs, but it's close.... Facebook too.

Looks like the "mid level" flat/flamed top with Barts model that someone swapped out the hardware (black for chrome  ;D), knobs, and pups ( ;D again...) on. I like it a lot!
