Lev Weksler

Just found this guy and I absolutely love his tone and playing. He plays a fast flute part (the Badinerie) and makes it look so effortless. Never heard anyone else attempting this flute solo on upright.

Yeah, it's classical, it's upright bass, but give it 3 minutes of your time, you're going to like it.

Very good intonation and bowing. Same for the Hungarian dance video. Solo tuning makes thumb position sound much better than orchestra tuned strings and I think that may be part of the reason his playing seems so impressive. Still he is definitely a very skilled and accomplished double bassist.

I saw Francois Rabbath many years ago...

Watching his left hand technique, he reminds me of Francois.

Wow, that's impressive!
Best tone I've heard on a double bass.

The tone is wonderful, and I was blown away watching his right hand - his grasp of that French bow appears so relaxed that you almost expect the bow to fall down. In fact, his entire body is a study in relaxation except for the critical movements.  Wow, simply wow.

What makes me suspicious is why haven't we heard of him from anything other than these youtube vids? You would think there would be more concert footage from someone with that amount of talent.

It's lovely, but I bet he came from cello. His hand technique (and the way he holds the double bass) is very "cello".

He's been around for quite a while. The communists schooled him in one of their secret laboratories.

That's what I was thinking too. Not so much the French bow technique (about 50% of bass players use a French bow) but his chair - not a high stool but the same height as the pianist. Only a cellist will choose to sit like that. He also must need an endpin anchor like cellists use - I've tried and it's impossible without it.
