Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Guitar mod with TBX pots
« on: May 04, 2020, 08:29:51 AM »
I was recently given a Strat copy at a charity gig. I've never owned a Strat before so this gives me chance to try out some pickups I was given 20+ years ago by UK luthier John Birch. They were experimental and as far as I know never went into production; he called them "Full Range". I plan on keeping the Strat wiring options as standard but to maybe try to take the pickup name at face value I'm planning on switching out both of the tone pots to Fender TBX pots, since I already had two of those in my bits box too. Does anyone know of any reasons for or against the idea; I know that Fender put one TBX and one normal tone pot into the mid-90s "Contemporary Strat" but I don't know if there was a sound reason for that.

I haven't measured the pickups but I believe they were low imp intended for a MIDI application, so making the guitar "active" might be a future option if the sound ends up disappointing.

This job is just something to keep myself busy with during Corona lockdown, so no great shakes if it doesn't work. I've already discovered that I'm good with a Dremel by making the pot area cavity bigger with a seamless join to take in the much bigger lower TBX.

The Outpost Cafe / Well, well, well?
« on: November 30, 2012, 10:19:00 AM »
There's been a fair few "sink holes" in recent weeks, including the Ohio one very recently; but is it just my eyes that's seeing bricks built in a circle, that suggest this one.........

The Outpost Cafe / Rolling Stones warm up gig

I seriously love the Stones; far far more a Stones over the Beatles guy & they've made some timeless classics....
......but surely Keith especially is not looking a well guy here?..........

He's always played fast & loose with the riffs during live shows, but every time he goes for it here it just looks like he couldn't play it if he really had to any more?

Watcha say?

The Outpost Cafe / Manny's Wall of Fame for sale

I remember being knocked out when I saw all the autographed pics on my one & only visit to the store.
Now they're up for grabs; tho' I dare say that the really sought after ones are in a vault somewhere.

The Outpost Cafe / Any Stax love on here?
« on: April 17, 2012, 02:57:56 AM »
I gotta admit that while most of my life I've been into heavier stuff mostly; Slade, Motorhead, classic 60s/70s rock I do have an all enclosing love for just anything that moves me - and that has to include Booker T. & The MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett et al and have been lucky enough to see Steve Cropper play live in the UK six times in the past three years. Booket T. is playing near me later this year too.

Such a shame then to hear that Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns, such an essential part of the whole sound passed recently. Gonna have a day of Stax playing as a tribute.

The Outpost Cafe / Davy Jones - The English Monkee
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:28:59 PM »
One of the highlights growing up in my early teens & before was The Monkees. Davy's voice was one of the best & by all accounts a really nice guy.

RIP little guy, you'll be missed.
