Ricky!
« on: September 10, 2008, 10:49:35 AM »
I found this great vid of bass lessons by Rick Danko on YouTube. Note his nice slothead EB. And of course the Ampeg. The song at the end is fun too!

I said it before lots of times, but Rick Danko is one of my favourite bass players and singers. In my opinion the best singer behind Steve Marriott. This man's got soul!!

The vid:

I've got that one. It's from Homespun, called Rick Danko's Electric Bass Techniques. It's a real stretch to call it a lesson or a techniques video, but I knew that before I bought it. He gives some basic pointers but most of the video is Rick talking, Rick playing, Rick being interviewed by Happy Traum. Worth it if you're a Rick Danko fan. Not really what I'd recommend to someone wanting a bass lesson video.

I did read about Artie's passing. I had no idea he was ill.

That's Happy playing guitar in the song at the end.

Hi! I would recomend any aspiring bass player to do a check out on Rick Dankos bass playing. He had a fantastic way of putting clever basslines together. Anyone out there who remembers the first listening to The Band II, and Look out Cleveland, for example? Wow! What an interesting bass line. Wild, and at the same time traditional in some ways. Dankos work with Levon Helm is pure masterpieces.
Now I'm splitting from the chilly fall in northern Sweden, for the warmth of the south of France! Adieu!

Absolutely. He had a remarkable feel for it. Even though I was never a big fan of The Band, I loved his work.

Two of my favorites: the basslines from The Shape I'm In and  Stage Fright.

I'm a huge Danko fan, The Last Waltz came out right when I was learing to play bass, saw it in the theatre and was hooked.

Danko looks high on heroin or something in that "lesson"
In a way he reminds me of Phil Lynott when he talks in that nasal way, slightly dazed and with pearls of sweat on his forehead...

Nice how you write "lesson":)

Danko was always high on things I guess... One of the reasons the Band quit. They all were on things....
