Gibson Basses / Is Basvarken the new Fraulein Mark?
« on: January 03, 2009, 03:59:53 AM »
I found this picture of Rob Basvarken with his Hobbit on a Dutch forum. I think he's in a Dutch Nasty Habits coverband now. It's called:

The Nasty Hobbits.

Bass Amps & Effects / '76 Ampeg B-100
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:00:14 AM »
Hi there,

Today I purchased a very, very, very cheap amp in a really good state. It's a very small '76 Ampeg practice combo. I think it has one 10" speaker and it only has two inputs, volume, bass, high, pilot lamp, on/off switch. It has a chrome panel, Ampeg knobs a small version of the ampeg logo (A + Ampeg) on the blue-ish silver grille. No pics yet, but can anybody tell me something about this amp?

Thanks and kind regards!

Bass Amps & Effects / Hiwatt Bass 100 + Hiwatt 410
« on: December 22, 2008, 07:50:30 AM »
Hi there!

I'm very happy with my Orange head, but I always loved Hiwatt because of The Who. That's really like my dream amp.
I sold my Orange 4x10 recently and I bought a new Hiwatt 4x10 with the same speakers. My Orange head is for sale too, and if I sell it, I'll buy a Hiwatt Custom 200 which sounds almost the same, but PTP instead of PC-board.

But this week I bought a 25 years old '83 Hiwatt Bass 100. It's like a modern version of Hiwatt, with foot-switchable-only second channel, line out, fx-loop and ugly square JCM800 type on/off and Stand-by switches. But it has the chickenheads:) It has a pc-board, four EL34s and it was cheap! It sounds very, very nice though! I played it for five hours yesterday and I love it. I want to keep the Orange, but someone's selling stuff to buy it from me. If he buys it, I'll get the 200 Custom, if not I'll keep the Orange.

Gibson Basses / Clownburst - Another Stahlpakt co-operation
« on: December 18, 2008, 10:25:17 AM »
I was browsing the great website Feitsh Guitars. You can find the most strange Italian guitars and basses. All those weird sixties instruments.

And it seems the Clownburst was no invention of Herr Uwe, but from his Italian friends. It seems the Stahlpakt is still alive:

Other Bass Brands / Diamond LP style bass
« on: December 18, 2008, 09:53:18 AM »
Hi there,

A local shop has a nice black bolt-on LP style bass of the Diamond brand. It's there for ages and nobody knows anything 'bout history, prices, and so. Any opinions here?

The shopkeeper asked me for advice, but I though you guys would know!

The Bass Zone / New band
« on: December 10, 2008, 07:58:10 AM »
Hi guys,

I have a new, second band, besides Boilersuit. It's called The La La Lies and we want to make some more sixties, garage kinda music. Of course I play bass. Can't do anything else...;)
We don't have music yet, but we will record some original songs and covers early next year.

Please befriend us at:

www.myspace.com/thelalalies

If we record, of course I'll use the Bird:)

The Outpost Cafe / Faces reuniting?
« on: November 13, 2008, 12:54:07 AM »
Somewhere in the late nineties Ian 'Mac' McLagan wrote in his more tha great book All The Rage that he wouldn't mind a Faces reunion. Last year Woody wrote the same in his nice biography. Now I read somewhere Rod the Mod is saying that they're 'willing' to come together again. That could be nice. But who could replace Plonk?

Guitars Etc. / Guitar question ('72 Tele Thinline RI)
« on: November 06, 2008, 12:47:44 AM »
There's a lot of technical knowledge here about guitars too, so I just ask this.

My girfriend has a MIM '72 Fender Telecaster Thinline reissue. She likes it a lot and soundwise it's fairly close to her Korean Epiphone Sheraton (with a lot of Gibson hardware).
At Harmony Central a guy posted he changed the 250K pots of his '72 RI to 500K ones. It sounds logical to me. A humbucker needs 500K and I guess Fender almost only uses 250K ones for Teles and Strats.

Could it be a wise idea to change the pots of this guitar? What will happen to the sound. Will there be a big difference?

Other Bass Brands / Gretsch
« on: October 23, 2008, 09:05:00 AM »
I tested a Gretsch White Falcon Bass yesterday for a review in our magazine. What a bass! Fookin' good! I love the over-the-top looks and the sound of the great, great, great TV Jones pick ups.

For the vintage section I'm looking for a high resolution picture of an old Gretsch bass, I know there are some around here, but I always forget who they are..... :-[

Gibson Basses / Clapton's 'The Fool' Gibson SG
« on: October 03, 2008, 12:00:18 AM »
Just a nice story I wanted to share. No real 'point' and only some guitar content;)

Last friday I was visiting a local bookstore when my I fell on two words on a book: 'Fool' and 'Posthuma'. As a sixties fan I immediately knew what that meant!

In the sixties a Dutch painter called Simon Posthuma, his girlfriend Marijke Kooger, an English guy called Barry and a girl named Josje formed art group called The Fool. They moved to London and they:

- Designed the original Sgt Pepper's sleeve. It was rejected, but they used it as an innersleeve at the first pressings.
- They decorated the Beatles Apple store outside and inside and they designed all the clothes which were sold.
- The made record covers and clothes for The Hollies and Cream.
- The Beatles wore their clothes during the famous All You Need Is Love broadcast.
- They painted Jack Bruce's Bass VI and the famous Clapton's SG.
- They made the original Wonderwall. Someone made a movie out of that and a gy with only one big eyebrow called a song after it in the 90s.
- They made records, produced by Booker T. Jones (they lived on his ranche), with Jony Mitchell, Graham Nash, Booker T. and much more famous people on it and they scored a 12 weeks number 1 hit in Holland.

That's just some of the achievements.

Well, this Simon has written a book which reads as aboys adventure. Brilliant. In Dutch only, but if it's a succes they'll try to get English and German translations out.

Yesterday I went to the book launch party and it was great to have a talk with the guy who designed/painted one of the most famous guitars ever. We talked about the SG, the fact it went for 500.000 dollars at an auction and the Vintage copies which are not official. A great guy, a great story and it's a pity they're not that well known in Holland...

The Outpost Cafe / I'm very worried about Uwe (money crisis and so).
« on: September 25, 2008, 12:20:34 AM »
Hi there,

Every time I put on the telly there's something about the financial problems in the US. Of course Uwe is working in this world and he doens't post that much lately, so I became a bit worried. I mailed him to ask if he's alright but it's far more worse than I thought:( :

He asked me to tell y'all he's doing fine and on holiday in NYC with Edith. He only has his Blackberry, and posting here isn't easy wich such a device. he also said that 'us ligitators are as vultures' so we don't have to worry about him and money.

But now comes the bad part. I'll qoute:

"I was at 48th street yesterday and saw a ltd ed Ibanez atk with birdseye maple top and a heavy ash body plus maple board neck in a pinkish/lilac fin ... I think I'm in love!!!"

WE HAVE TO STOP HIM! An Ibanez for Christ's sake...
A birdseye maple top doesn't sound like Gibson! And either is am ash body or maple neck:(

Gibson Basses / Ricky!
« on: September 10, 2008, 10:49:35 AM »
I found this great vid of bass lessons by Rick Danko on YouTube. Note his nice slothead EB. And of course the Ampeg. The song at the end is fun too!

I said it before lots of times, but Rick Danko is one of my favourite bass players and singers. In my opinion the best singer behind Steve Marriott. This man's got soul!!

The vid:
