Title: Gibson reissues The Paul
Post by: Dave W on November 14, 2018, 12:05:17 AM
Gibson The Paul 40th Anniversary 2019 (https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TP195NNH--gibson-the-paul-40th-anniversary-2019-walnut-vintage-gloss)

I don't know how these will sell at $1400 considering that you can find originals for about $1000. They were more or less no frills entry level LPs toward the end of the Norlin era, before the LP Studios. At some point they were also called Firebrand, and there was an SG version too. But they were solid walnut, not just a walnut finish, and the ones I've heard sound really good, so who knows, maybe this reissue will sell.

They should make a bass with walnut body and neck!

My friend and on again/off again guitarist of 20+ years has one and it's a fine guitar. I started a thread a while back about him wanting to refinish it. I didn't know they were actually walnut until this reissue came out.

I can't believe it's 40 years. I still remember the ads when they first came out.

Kiesel (Carvin) offers that as an option, at least on the LB neck through series. I played one once in a store. Walnut is definietly stiff enough for a neck.

It's disturbing when you remember something like it was yesterday and realize how long ago it was. Happens to me all the time.

Can't be a 74 if it's a Firebrand. The Paul and The SG weren't issued until 1978 and the Firebrands came about 1980.

Also, I was mistaken about the Firebrands' bodies. The Paul and The SG were all walnut bodies. Two years later The Paul Deluxe and The SG Deluxe were also issued , but those had mahogany bodies, and those were the ones also called Firebrand.

The Fender Precision Special (1980-82) had a walnut option, body and neck.

There's one for sale here for $950.  I still think it's too much.

Without the original t-top pickups, I sure wouldn't pay that much.

Doh! Wrong guitar. The sg is a 1980 which he got with a faulty rear pickup so it now has a Bill Lawrence l 500 in there.Full sounding.

Hey, I had one of these.. 1978 The Paul, bought it at De plug in Amsterdam, 2004 or 2005. Very solid and good wood, but never loved it and it just didn't sound right. Sold it a few years ago for about $1000. I had it for sale for quite a while, not much interest. Funny they reissue it. Here is mine just before I sold it:

EDIT: I haven't used photobucket since it started to be troublesome, not shure if picture is available for all..

I can see it but "proudly hosted on Photobucket" and a camera logo overlays a small part of the photo. I'm guessing you have a free account and this is their way of urging you to upgrade.

My favorite music shop in Amsterdam. Always a happy place, and Peter is a stand up guy.
