The Outpost Cafe / A quick request.
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:13:25 PM »
Hello everyone, I just have a quick request form those of you that have Facebook. IMAX is having a contest to design a Tron: Legacy inspired light cycle. I crafted a basic design for a Chopper variation in Autodesk Maya and submitted it so it is now in the voting phase. Could you guys go and vote for it? There is a limit of one vote per day and the voting period runs from today until Thursday(Dec. 23). My design can be found here. Thanks in advance, I would greatly appreciate the votes.

The Outpost Cafe / No wedding pranks before the wedding? Alright but...

He did not say anything about no pranks after the wedding.

Best Man Modifies Couple's Bed to Tweet When They Do the Deed
What newlyweds do in the bedroom is typically private and for good reason, too. But thanks to a friend, one couple's proclivity for sex is being broadcast via Twitter. According to Tech Crunch, an anonymous UK man says, as a prank, he rigged the bed of two recently married friends to tweet each time they do the deed. To do this, he hid a pressure-sensitive pad underneath the mattress that registers each time movement begins and ends. This device sends the data to this anonymous Twitter account, which lets followers know when the couple is "on the job" and how much of a "frenzy" they worked up.

If this story is true, then it's one of the funnier wedding pranks we've heard about. But with both the prankster and newlyweds remaining unnamed, we're not sure we buy it. It doesn't look like we'll find out who's behind this anytime soon.

The Outpost Cafe / James Cameron's Avatar
« on: August 21, 2009, 08:03:45 PM »
For some time now, many of the sites I visit on a regular basis have been going mad over seeing what this movie is going to look like. Cameron has put a boat load of money into making his new film with his last one being Titanic. All we have known is that it follows a marine that has been paralyzed and is pushed into an alien world as an avatar to the native humanoid life. Within the past two days, the teaser trailer was released and today was Avatar day in which IMAX theaters all over showed off 15 minutes of the film in 3D. Of course I was among those to go see it and one thing many are saying is just "wow." The 3D was probably the best I have ever seen and while the CGI was not what some expected considering this movie has been in development for 7 years, it still looked great. I have already been hearing about places being sold out of tickets for when the movie comes out on December 18th and if that week was not the last week of my fall semester at the school I am transferring to, I would be among them.

The Outpost Cafe / ILM and Michael Bay
« on: June 24, 2009, 04:43:25 AM »
It is currently 4:30 A.M. and I just thought I would say right now that Transformers ROTF was something I enjoyed quite a bit. While there are the flaws with story and such, it is a great movie just to sit back and enjoy all the explosions combined with complex CGI. ILM really pulled it off with the visual effects and I know that Bay was still approving shots the day of the first premier. The amount of data for the first one was about 20 TB, this one weighs in at 145 TB as the total number of transformers was bumped up from 17 to 46.

I personally found a number of things amusing though out the movie and one scene had me laughing the hardest I have in a really long time.

The AMC I went to started the day with 6 regular showings and 1 IMAX showing which was sold out sometime over the weekend. At noon 2 showings were sold out and when I got my tickets at 12:30, a showing sold out right when I was at the machine. By 4 they had bumped it up to 9 screens while 4 were sold out. 6:30 revealed that there were 3 out of 11 were still open but that was gone by 8:30. The worst part was leaving with everyone else as the 12 screens all got out at once. There was even going to be a 3:30 A.M. showing or two so the lobby was still packed while the top floor of the parking structure was stopped completely for more than 10 minutes.(see pictures)

The Outpost Cafe / Pixar has done it again... (May movie wrap up)
« on: June 09, 2009, 09:55:29 AM »
I know that this past weekend was the second weekend for Up and I saw it last weekend but I got distracted. Sitting here in class I decided to do something a little productive and simply say that Up was great. It might be Pixar's darkest movie in a way because it does deal with the death of someone. I can't type much because I am on my iPhone but I did see it in 3D. The 3D that pixar used was simple there for perspective and to give the viewer the depth to make them feel even more like they are in the movie. Only once I noticed an object coming out of the screen like a lot of 3D movies do.

When I get a chance, I will add Terminator Salvation and NIght at the museum 2.

Gibson Basses / Epiphone Special Runs
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:09:12 AM »
So I just got an email from Epiphone that mentioned that they are starting a special run of guitars. The only bass is a special version of the Thunderbird that some of you chrome lovers may like. I am liking the silverburst finish that they gave it too. If I still played bass regularly I would consider getting one.

Doing a search, this sounds similar to the silverburst Epi that was mentioned a year ago.

The Outpost Cafe / Live Long and Prosper

So I went and saw the new Star Trek tonight and I thought I would share my spoiler free opinion and see if anyone else is planning to see it.

I actually enjoyed the movie even though I have never been much of a Star Trek fan. I thought the choices in actors were pretty good including Zachary Quinto as Spock and Karl Urban as McCoy. It was actually pretty interesting to see how they started from the beginning with the characters of the original series but kept it separate. One could actually say the movie is a continuation from the original series or an alternate, it makes sense after seeing the movie.

Rottentomatoes.com still has the movie at 95% with an average rating of 8/10 and only 8 out of 151 marking it as rotten.

Also, I thought it was pretty cool to see Leonard Nimoy reprising his role in the movie as well.

The Outpost Cafe / Who watches the Watchmen?
« on: March 06, 2009, 05:42:35 PM »
I guess I did because I went to the midnight showing last night and felt that I should see if anyone else has seen it or is planning to. Below are my thoughts on it for those that might want to read them.

Zack Snyder, the director behind 300, has once again taken a favorite in the comic book world and put it onto film with Watchmen. The film takes place in an alternative 1985 in which Nixon is still president and there is a large amount of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union placing the doomsday clock at 5 minutes to midnight from fear of a nuclear war. After being outlawed in 1977, a few superheroes remain active whether they are working for the government or outside the law itself. After discovering that one of this former colleagues has been murdered, former superhero turned vigilante Rorschach(Jackie Earle Haley) starts investigating the reason behind it. As he investigates the murder he uncovers a plot that is intent on killing and discrediting all past and present vigilantes. As he reconnects with members of his former crime-fighting legion, including Nite Owl II, Silk Spectre II and Dr. Manhattan, they uncover a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy that not only links to their shared past but has catastrophic consequences for the future.

I thought the movie was actually pretty good though it is obviously a love it or hate it movie. Those that I was with liked it but I have one friend who says it is the worst movie ever, worse than Plan 9 from Outer Space. With that being said, Watchmen looks like it jumped right out of the graphic novel at times with stunning visual effects. There were a few things that got changed in the process but the feel remained the same. Snyder has brought brought back the slow down and speed up style during fights that many loved about 300. The film also had a considerable amount of blood and gore that includes someone getting their knee bent the complete wrong way.

I have seen a number of people stating that the rating is off for the film. The reason behind that is because one of the characters, Dr. Manhattan(Billy Crudup), provides full frontal male nudity on many occasions along with the sex scene in the middle of the movie between Nite Owl II(Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre II(Malin Akerman).

When it comes down to it, I recommend it to anyone that wants to see a good action movie whether or not one has read the graphic novel. My only regret came with the fact that I was exahusted going into the movie which meant I was trying to stay awake during the first half. After finally losing the battle and missing no more than 10 minutes,  one of my friends nudged me and I was completely awake the rest of the movie.

The Outpost Cafe / Why so serious?
« on: July 17, 2008, 12:14:11 AM »
So who is going to go see The Dark Knight this weekend? My friend bought our tickets this afternoon for the midnight showing. About mid-day I checked to see how much was sold out at the local AMC we are going to and they had 2 of the 4 showings sold out. I went back around 9:30 and they had increased the number of theaters from 4 to 10 with 2 still sold out.

The Outpost Cafe / "I am Iron Man!"
« on: May 02, 2008, 12:12:32 AM »
So I just got back from one of those 8 p.m. advanced screenings of Iron Man at my local AMC theater. I am being honest when I say that this movie makes up for all those awful superhero movies that have been made in the past including Dare Devil and The Hulk. Robert Downey Jr. does a great job in the role of playboy Tony Stark, a man with the philosophy that the best weapon is one that only needs to be used once. To my knowledge from hearing from others, the movie stays with the comic book with a updated time frame.

Another thing that looked amazing was the CGI. From the fight scenes to the suit being assembled, it all looked pretty good. I easily recommend the movie to anyone, just make sure you stay till after the credits for the second of the two noticeable references to the future of the comic.

Something I did not care for was the last line before the credits because from what I took after looking online, it was something that got changed and anyone who knows the comic series will probably know what I mean.

The Outpost Cafe / My generation is going deaf!

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/27/study-finds-teens-dont-really-care-about-their-hearing/

Quote
Those darn kids -- they just don't listen! And soon, according to a report, they won't physically be able to listen. It seems that modern teens, with their cloaking jackets, space telephones, and telepathic headsets fail to obey the simplest tenet of leisure-time music enjoyment: keeping their iPod and Zune volumes at a semi-natural level. In focus-group discussions, researchers found that high school students in the Netherlands were aware of the potential hearing loss which can be caused by high volume listening, yet had no immediate plans to crank their jams at anything but 11. Typical of our misguided youth, the teens feel that they have a "low personal vulnerability" to hearing loss -- researchers also noted that they believed they were bulletproof, could fly, and would never, ever lose touch with people who signed their yearbook. The study's findings suggest that the answer to this problem may lie with manufacturers of hardware and solutions like volume caps or warning lights, rather than with the self-control of the end user.
I guess the hearing aid companies will love us one day.

I personally respect my hearing and can't stand music when it is that loud.
