That's odd. Not familiar with the BG-31, it must have a thick top like the old Epi El Capitan, otherwise the top would probably have started to fail first. Since he's had the bass awhile and it hasn't happened before, it's not likely that the rosewood bridge really isn't rosewood. Most likely user error, especially if he was using the 50-105 Chromes set.

The original bridge on my Earthwood lifted off the body and required a bit of internal reconstruction and a new /better bridge, but I've never seen anything like this before. Termites? Stringmites? I dunno

futher down the thread it says he had to 'dig' the strings out. at one point fender abgs were made to accept only fender bronzes. maybe this was one of them. dumb idea imo.

Would have made more sense to push them out using pliers than to dig them out.

I had one of those...it was an ok bass...nothing wrong with the bass.

It does become a problem when someone decides to change strings using a chainsaw as the primary tool.
