Title: Identify the bass
Post by: Dave W on March 29, 2010, 02:33:46 PM
Two clips from late 1964 - early 1965 with a young Johnny Paycheck on bass with George Jones' band.

I can't remember seeing any Japanese basses this early. Could it be a European brand? Body sort of reminds me of an Egmond but not the headstock.

That must be it, or at least something from the same Japanese factory. Hard to miss a headstock like that.

Same idea here.  That headstock and the rocker switch are pure Japan...and it looks like a Jag rip-off.  I've gotta think Japanese.

That rocker switch was standard equipment on just about everything Tiesco and Crestwood made in the 60s.

I knew a kid in high school that bought one of those at a garage sale for $90 and we still laughed at how he got ripped off! It had been sprayed flat gray and looked like hell. In actuality, it was better than my first bass (playing and sounding), but the thing was so fugly nobody could get past it...

That is a Teisco Del Ray. It was my first bass in Japan. Mine was cherry red with a silver striped pick guard.

The headstocks in those basses are beyond ugly. But I'd like to have one... ;)
