The Outpost Cafe / Not a KISS post...
« on: June 20, 2017, 10:45:23 AM »
Didn't want to intrude on the love-fest for KISS in the other thread (don't hit me, please...  :-X )

Tonight I'm headed for Denver to see the Moody Blues at Fiddler's Green with my daughter and her guy. MUCH good music coming tonight!! We'll be in the center section of seats near the back.

Other Bass Brands / Hamer Cruise 5-string?

Saw this on Ebay - price is low because of a crack along the headstock tuners. Should be an easy fix.

The Outpost Cafe / Watching PBS specials again...
« on: April 19, 2017, 07:09:28 PM »
Sitting at home watching the Moody Blues at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000. I reaffirmed an existing opinion....

John Lodge is an absolute master as a bass player. In the pocket, driving the music, always in place and on time. In the last few numbers he has played otherwise identical sunburst Fender Jazz basses, one fretless and one fretted. There was also what looked like a black Tacoma acoustic on one number. His stuff is deceptively difficult, and always tasteful.

He is probably one of the most underrated bass players of the past 50 years. No one has written music quite like the Moody Blues, and at their concerts I see fans from 12 to 70.

In fact, I learned they will be in Denver June 20, and I'm in the process of buying tickets right now. I think it will be the sixth time I've seen them, dating back to about 1968.

The Outpost Cafe / Mommy, make it stop!
« on: April 03, 2017, 05:50:28 PM »
Did anyone else catch the band playing in the half-hour before the NCAA men's final?

I think the perpetrators may have been Aerosmith, but if not them, then I apologize for demeaning them.

A frickin' cacophony of sound. Guitar wanking, incoherent babbling and screaming, gratuitous rolling around on the stage. I'd much rather they had showed commercials for ED. At least I could look away from that.   :P

The second number showed that it was indeed Aerosmith. That was an improvement, in that I could understand the lyrics and follow the music. The wanking factor was somewhat less.

Disappointing, as I'm an Aerosmith fan, but I didn't like this performance.

The Outpost Cafe / I'm still very impressionable....
« on: February 17, 2017, 10:59:20 AM »
Evidently my young, impressionable mind has been warped by this forum. I just got this tech help ticket from one of our classrooms and immediately thought of Mark:

Johnson Hall 220, After fixing the podium from not working (It wasn't plugged in i already resolved that issue.) the teacher reported that in the past there has been loud vibrating sound coming from the podium. I could slightly hear it when I was in the room after I got the podium working.

Why do people leave their vibrators lying around?   ;D

The Outpost Cafe / Antique radios "Gotta have"
« on: February 10, 2017, 12:00:31 PM »
In a town nearby, a gent recently passed away who was a master collector of antique radios. The online auction was yesterday, and there were a couple hundred radios sold.  I ended up with three.

First, a 1937 Philco "Tombstone" style farm set (a farm set is battery only, as they pre-date rural electrification in the US):

Next, a 1937 Zenith Tombstone style:

And a 1947 Motorola radio/record player combination:

Going to pick them up this afternoon!

Some of the ultra-collectible Zenith floor models went high....

This one went for $595:

This one for $665:

I KNOW I don't need them, but I've never been able to come up with two of the 30's Tombstone style radios before. There were some incredibly cool radios, a number of tube testers, and other stuff.

If you feel like spending a few minutes surfing the radios, try this link:  https://whitleyauction.hibid.com/catalog/88275/2-9-17-antique-radios--crocks-and-more-estate-auction-/

The Bass Zone / Have you heard Sturgill Simpson?
« on: January 24, 2017, 12:39:57 PM »
I only found out about these guys when they hit Colbert. Their bass player is FAST and has a great sound.  I'm digging these guys a lot! They do some very nice slow stuff, but it's their rockin' stuff that gets me.

The Outpost Cafe / General aaaaarrrrrghhhhh...
« on: September 05, 2016, 11:38:43 AM »
Just kicking myself around the place...

Last weekend I spent a half-day installing backer rod and caulking around two dormers and a 30-foot stretch on the back side of the house where new roofing left a gap between the siding edge and new shingles. I carefully selected clear caulk for this---or was sure I had.

Today i went out to check AGAIN to see when it would turn clear.  Still white.

So i checked the empty tubes, and one of the four was clear. The others are all white.  Someone must have dropped a clear tube into the other box, and i read its label and grabbed four.

MY FAULT for not checking each tube individually.  MY FAULT for not seeing it while I was climbing up and down the ladder.

Now I have white goop visible in the gap and on the dark shingles nearly all the way around the damn house.  And it's just after noon as I post this, so even getting a picture was tough....one frustration leads to another.

I'm checking options including removing it and re-caulking.  If I don't do that, the best idea I have is painting it black.

Guitars Etc. / Guild S-200 Thunderbird reissue?
« on: August 15, 2016, 08:13:06 AM »
This is billed as a Guild Thunderbird - looks like a guitar version of the DeArmond Jetstar bass. Evidently Muddy Waters played a Guild Thunderbird...and DeArmond (whoever owned them) decided to copy the body look for the bass in the 90's. I had one of the DeArmond Jetstars for a while.

Huh. Now I've learned about another little juxtaposition of instrument names...Thunderbird has been used on guitar and bass.

It has enough switches and pots to make guitarists happy, I guess:

The Outpost Cafe / A new experience - totally surprised!
« on: August 07, 2016, 09:08:09 PM »
Saturday night my wife JoAnn and I went to Denver fo dinner and to take the family and (Liz) oldest daughter's significant boyfriend (Morgan) to Dick Dale.  He was introduced to him last year and Dale blew him away - he's a big fan now.

At any rate, I happened to find out that my wife had taken along one of my gig bags; she explained that Liz had bought Morgan a surprise electric guitar because he'd been making noises about trying guitar. She wanted to borrow the gig bag to keep the guitar nice in case it didn't work out and they needed to return ot exchange it. No problem, I don't use them much anyway. I even packed up a Fender Champ amp with a cable and basic guitar strap so he'd have he basics to make noise with.

So we went to Liz and Morgan's, and at the agreed upon moment, Liz went to the closet and brought out....

A Gretsch 2202 bass, TOTALLY custom finished with WSU graphics, artwork and photos. It was a setup to blow my mind with a gift to ME from the family and Morgan! This is simply incredible - I've never seen anything like this, and it's a one-of-a-kind done by a friend of theirs who lives in Florida and does an occasional custom like this as a hobby. The gig bag was part of the setup to make sure I'd have a safe way to get it back home. BTW, they also had the Gretsch chrome humbuckers replaced with TV Jones ThunderTrons. The guy who did the work is a musician and understands this stuff.

I had no words, other than multiple Thank Yous and that this was the neatest and most unexpected thing that ever happened to me!

This unique bass sounds great and is a giant GO, COUGS! to the world!

Photos are at: http://s83.photobucket.com/user/apowell1/library/Electric%20Basses/Cougar%20Bass%20-%20Gretsch%202202?sort=4&page=1

Here are a bunch of them. You can't believe how thoroughly covered this bass it - there isn't two square inches anywhere on it without graphics, other than the back of the neck.

My photo (with headset) was Photoshopped next to a photo of a Coach Mike Leach bobblehead...

Other Bass Brands / 1974 Guild M85 II - pretty but overpriced
« on: July 13, 2016, 04:18:30 PM »
It shore is kinda purdy....but shows a fair amount of wear, although not beat.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1974-GUILD-M-85-II-2-BLACK-LES-PAUL-KAY-J-P-BASS-HARMONY-H-22-MOJO-/302013539881?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276

Are those bridge saddles original? One appears to be split in half.  Fair amount of finish checking, too.

I don't follow prices for these but it seems to be priced at least 3X what it should be.
