Gary 'Mani' Mounfield
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:21:31 AM »
I'm a big fan of Mani's. In his Stone Roses period he played two Rickenbacker 4005s, after that, with Primal Scream, he played a lot of different Ricky 3000s and a couple of years ago I saw him play on TV with an SG Reissue Bass. Now he does the Primal Scream Screamadelica Tour with a black JCS:

I remember you mentioning him in connection with your Rick 3000, yet I had never heard of him before then. His bands aren't well known in the US.

I got switched on to Stone Roses by my son. One of the great tragedies of rock that they only did 2 albums, due to stupid music industry infighting. We do a couple of SR covers, which is great if there's any SR fans in the audience, because they're always ecstatic. I don't think many bands do it.

You could buy this  :P

I was just listening to 'Love Spreads' on my way back from lunch. I like the Stone Roses but most people I know aren't familiar with them.

Are you buying that "Grabber" Chris?

Also I blame your subliminal messaging for the black JC that's now hanging next to the black Ripper on my wall.

Now, I don't think so. I want a Ripper once. In Rick Danko Sunburst. But I want a lot 'once' haha!

Have I something to do with a Black JCS??

And here he is with a mid sixties EB0 - I remember this being on, and it's the only time i've seen him with it as far as I can remember

I believe I saw him with a SG Reissue too. With Primal Scream on Jonathan Ross.

I saw the Stone Roses play, yesterday.

Epic!

If only the drummer didn't run off to go home between set and encore, ha ha!

Mani played great! Hey really did some great soul riffs, he played some very tight unisono parts with John Squire and the boy sure knows how to groove!

He had a more aggressive sound, than I know from the old Stone Roses performances on DVD. That made the band a bit more aggressive, more rock, and better IMHO. Yesterday he switched between two Jack Casady's all the time. One was a black one with 'Hacienda stripes' (yellow/black waring stripes) and 'Mani United' on the back. The other one was, I think, a goldtop, but with a psychedelic paintjob. Think the Strat of George Harrison.

He ditched his Marshall VBA400's in favour of two Mesa 8x10s and two Mesa amps. Couldn's see which ones.

For the last song he switched to a SG Reissue Bass (Black) which sounded very, very mellow. More the old Roses sound.

Great gig!

Great you got to go. I decided not to risk it, and it would have involved serious travel.

In most of the Youtube clips you can either hear or see the JC, but not both. This one gets it though.

Seems to be a lot of long John Squire solos, some of the clips are 10-12 minutes long.

And the man himself briefly endorsing the JC on Basschat. It was him, didn't stay long though.
