Title: REPRO THUNDERBIRD COVERS
Post by: dadagoboi on June 06, 2012, 03:39:05 PM
Just got the first prototype of the pickup cover from Steve.  The plan is to do both covers, based on the 60s parts but with the bridge cover tall enough so it will fit a three point without spacers. The bridge cover pictured is the $20 repro currently on the market.

We'll go ahead if there's enough interest.  We intend is to initially make them in nickel silver but if there's enough interest chrome is a possibility.  Price to be determined but I'm thinking around $100 for the pair with screws, delivered USA for LBOers.

You know we all want these. Please make them, I know I'm not the only one dying for them.

Offer them in gold and consider me owing you a lifetime of gratitude

I'd be interested in a set for my Bach, but I wouldn't want a height mismatch between the two covers. If the bridge cover was a pickguard's height taller than the other that'd be cool.

Actually both the 60's and 70's bridge covers are taller than the pup covers, by about 1/8".  The Chinese ones are short but most of them are.

So the bridge and pup covers will be different heights- the correct height for each including a short leg on the treble (pickguard) side of the pup cover, same as the originals.  We're gonna keep this as simple as possible and as close as Gibson would...oh wait, that probably wouldn't be very close.

glad to see you and Steve doing these. i have had my hands full these last few months but i hope that stuff is coming to a close. literally. it is closing fast now. looking good on the big cover, i hope you have an original to use as a template for the bridge cover. i don't have a T-Bird to use any on but i have an LP i would pop one on in a heartbeat.

Good to hear you're getting better, Bill.  Had a customer request for covers so it was time to give it a shot.

There are some factions here who can't wait to buy them and have them black anodized ;D

Available in any finish you want as long as it's nickel silver. ;)

Final prototypes came in from Steve the other day.  Sized to fit 60's Thunderbirds and Embassies; Reverse, NRs and BaCHs.  Also available for Bicentennials and Epi Pros.  Screws included.  The bend radius is the same as used on the 60s covers.  Solid nickel silver.

Much like nylon panties, pretty, but they do get in the way.

 For you maybe  ;)

I'm quite fond of both, especially the panties - Strangely, I prefer them in black  ;D

You can say that again! They look fantastic! Great job I can more than appreciate the effort and mania it take to make this stuff! Having said that I don't think I''l be buying any :( Sure they have bling factor but they more than get in the way at least for me. Oh hell maybe I'll order a set just because.

Might be worth a look, *if* time allows this weekend I'll see about taking a pic with a set laying on the Pinkie NR 8.

I have them on one of my 20 or so Revs (the 64 II one) and they look good on that, but they do limit my playing. As that bass has flatwounds, the fact that I cannot dampen strings well anymore isn't quite as crucial, but my playing is still affected by the ashtrays. More so than by the treble pup cover of a Ric which I see as disciplining me to play closer to the bridge than I normally would. Besides, that Ric pup cavity looks just awful. The TBird, otoh, has nothing to hide.

But practicality aside those remakes are nice.

I really like bridge covers alot, my hand always lays on the bridge because I play most comfortably there........The outboard side of my pinkie finger has quite a callous from my basses that don't have them, the ones that do are more comfy to play, the neck pup cover isn't in the way at all, for me the "sweet spot" on a 'Bird is just ahead of the bridge  :)
