Orfeus Hebros bass from Bulgaria. Late 60s/early 70s.
-
Interesting...
Did Ilan buy one of those as a wallhanger...?
-
I have the exact same bass! Here's mine:
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll127/ilanlukatch/Orfeus%20Hebros%20bass/2011-03-23112126.jpg)(http://www.euroguitars.co.uk/download/file.php?id=6272&sid=776e034b53b1c504b2ef97225d3a5db5)
As you can see I gutted the crappy soviet harness, installed two decent pots (master vol and master tone), a pickup selector switch and a Switchcraft jack in the front.
Not a bad sounding bass (although pickups are weak) and a nice playing neck once I shimmed and straightened it.
You can find more info here: http://www.euroguitars.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=406&sid=776e034b53b1c504b2ef97225d3a5db5
Definitely a conversation piece. I bought it just because it reminded me of the Gibson "Jazz Moderne":

Wow. Two Orfeus (Orfeii?) on one small forum. Are we trendsetters or what?
-
Ilan, that's awesome and beautiful! The finish on mine doesn't appear to be in as good a shape as yours, but matters not.
Question: How do you adjust the pickup height?
-
It's a commie Coronado!

It's a commie Coronado!
LOL ! ;)
Very cool basses too!

Question: How do you adjust the pickup height?
I don't think they are adjustable for height. They are just bolted to a white plastic base. I guess you can raise them but you can't lower.
They are so shallow, there's not even a cutout in the top.
-
Now that's a bare bones pickup.
Should be easy enough to shim it if you need to raise it.
-
If there's no cutout, I can mount any pickups I want in there if I decide I don't care for the stock ones. I might go mod crazy on this one.
-

Saw that and thought it looked cool. Congrats!
-
What I hadn't noticed when I hit the BIN on mine, and surprised me when I received it (same seller, BTW), was that it's a flat-top (and back).
-
found this:(translated)
There is a log Bulgarian .... although it was rather ... Generally speaking that Bulgarian music as a master greatly exceeded the Sverdlovsk gunsmiths on product quality, I would not. But the resource is embedded in their creations much more. Where necessary - left under the tree dofrezerovku, space for other coil ... In general "in mind" designed. Do not think that this is a copy of the very gibsonovskoy model. No, what you just look at the original orfeevskuyu trehuhuyu hyperfine head bent forward and strings at once clear that Gibson then, copyrights, rock will never be ... postyditstsa and bitter cry, and go into a corner.
The sensors are also very original: a chrome-plated brass box contains three square kusochika magnet. Lie obliquely, not haphazardly, but side to side as they fell raspolyusovany. not all together, but not through one, and not just fix this raspolyusovku because they lie on a thick layer of thick kleeobraznoy substance is not fully lost its viscosity. Magnets wound neatly around sickly Bulgarian wire "four" in the plastic coil. Wire wound sparse, economical: on the front sensor is about two and kilooma but in the background as much as three! The sensors are connected in antiphase and each have its own volume control. Before going to pyatishtyrkovy jack is decorative tone control. Its capacity is, unfortunately, can adjust the high frequency part of the only guitar band, but he is able to on bass at the expense of drying Konder create that unique high background, which in amplifiers are called "warm vintage sound." The number of background adjusted within wide limits, but not up to scratch.
Scale is not very long, very short, probably as a consequence, the string tension is not great, and leaves open the possibility to play fluently at the ninth fret, even that can not but rejoice solo bassists, so your favorite music in any team. The upper and lower deck completely flat and made of a three-layer plywood. Instead of springs, by attaching the neck to the bottom of the buttons is a continuous beam of alder with a delicately milled groove. Sound like the sound of the original product's gum from the cowards and the timbre of sound and by volume.
However, under the fence to throw a beautiful hand was raised, and after alteration of landing the neck and replace the original coil pickups on homemade, made on the basis of the magnets from hard drives and WD Fudge scientific method of winding, and then rewind back to the scientific part of the wire, the instrument came to life. Particularly pleased with the anchor, without strain straightened cm deflection on the neck. Very hard at anchor correctly, yes! all who wants to poklast anchor somewhere - find a monster, disembowel him neck take a look what's what, understand, learn, and send picture please ... or at least, the basic dimensions:) The original tone control was replaced by variton in volume replaced by potentiometers. The result is an instrument with an original, but full-sounding antique.
-
However, under the fence to throw a beautiful hand was raised
Was this a review by Yoda? ???
That "continuous beam of alder" must mean it's a semihollow.
Sounds like whoever wrote this had replaced the pickups.
-
"continuous beam of alder" I think refers to the sustain block. Looks more spruce than alder but I could be wrong.
-
That's what I mean, with that beam it's not a true hollowbody.
Agreed, doesn't look like any alder I've seen, maybe Bulgarian alder is different.
-
That's what I mean, with that beam it's not a true hollowbody.
Thank God, semi-hollowbodies are my faves!! True hollowbodies are too feedback-prone. IME.
As long as the neck is decent I couldn't care less what kinda wood the bass is made of.
-
It's plywood. The bass balances well on a strap with no neck-dive.
The neck is short scale (30") and narrow at the nut, but thick front-to-back, so it doesn't feel like a Geddy J or an Ibanez pencil neck. It's actually kinda comfy, although mine could use a good refret. The Bulgarian frets are like mandolin frets.
-
The Bulgarian frets are like mandolin frets.
Of course they are, it's a Gypsy Bass! ;)
-
I wonder if a set of Filtertrons would fit on that??
-
When I bought mine from the same seller in the Ukraine, he sent it over with the neck detached, in a white cotton cloth bag with some bubble wrap and cardboard pieces, tied with a piece of string - no box! I wonder how Ian's is going to be shipped.

LMFAO hahahahahahahaah
It's a commie Coronado!
-
(channeling Yakov Smirnoff here)
In America, you play bass.
In Soviet Bulgaria, bass plays you!
-
A "Commienado?"
A "Corocommie"?
-
Incomunicado...?
-
Craponado...?

Corolshevik?

It's here!
All strung up, with Chromes.
My main concern was that the neck was stable and not warped. Neck is in good shape, action is great. The neck is clearly copied from a Hofner, it's exactly like a Hofner "Cavern".
Has a 5-pin output jack, new standard T/S jack on it's way. The tuners are passable, they hold tuning just fine, and look cool so I probably won't plan on replacing them. Tailpiece is kinda crappy, I will replace that. The neck pickup is at the proper distance from the strings, so unless it's weak, as noted by Ilan, or sounds crappy, I'll probably keep the pickups. But, the good thing is, since there's no routing in the top for the pickups, I can drop in anything if I should choose to. Once I get the jack installed I'll give it a listen, but plays just fine.
-
Congrats! Looks great.
And you got the cloth sack too! LOL! Don't they have cardboard boxes in the Ukraine?
You're right about the neck profile being Hofner-like. Are you sure the bridge is where it's supposed to be? In the pic it looks about an inch and a half south of its proper location.
Enjoy your Bulgarian art deco beauty!
-
I hadn't set-up the bass yet when I took that pic, had literally just finished assembling and stringing it. After set-up the bridge is much close to the pickup.
-
So how do Chromes sound on the bass? I have an old obscure set of dead roundwounds on mine. I might change to chromes... which did you use, short or long scale? Because I have a spare short scale set but there's the extra length from the tailpiece to the bridge.
-
I need to replace the 5-pin jack before I know how it sounds plugged in.
The Chromes were out of my Used Strings Box, so I'm not real sure if they're short-scale or not, I just held them up to the bass and they fit so I slapped 'em on. Except for the E string the actual winding doesn't wrap around the post, just the silk portion.
-
You can always measure the string length past the bridge, but I'm confident that you need to add at least 2" to the scale length for strings that will fit. That's common for basses with a floating bridge.
-
Yep.
-
Im still wondering if a set of TV Jones Filtertrons would fit. You might check that out if the stock pickups are stinkers.
-
I was thinking about getting one of these to use with the stock pickups.

Do not think that this is a copy of the very gibsonovskoy model. No, ....
That whole ...erm...translation (probably too strog a word to use after reading it ;D ) is pure comedy gold.
-
Got a new output jack yesterday, so I'll get to actually hear this bass soon, maybe tonight.
-

We're all in suspenders over this.... ;)
-
Short scale chromes don't fit. The silk goes over the nut almost to the first fret.
-

That's as expected. You need at least medium scale strings.
-
Installed the jack yesterday, as mentioned, pickup output is low but certainly useable. Neck pickup volume pot seems to be the only one that works. No signal from the bridge pickup, and tone control has zero affect. Tone from the one working pickup is good tho', very old-school with the flatwounds. I dig it, and, I usually only use the neck pickup on two-pickup hollowbodies anyway.
New tailpiece on its way.
-
Another satisfied capitalist customer! :)
-
Excellent. I recommend my mod - get rid of the bolshevik harness and install good quality pots.
-
Yes, considering age and questionable electronics, a new harness and pots would be wise.

I think that thing is just wonderful looking!
-
The coolness factor of that bass is extreme!
-
Excellent! I see a new jack socket... have you replaced the pots?
-
Goshski... 8)
-
have not touched the electronics yet, except to shoot some contact cleaner, which cleaned up the neck volume to where it's almost scratch-free.
-
If there was ever a fin that screamed Art Deco this would have to top the list...!
are you gonna gig her Ronn..?
-
You bet!
I'm quite frustrated right now 'cause we only have "Beatles only" gigs. We don't play a "British Invasion" show for another 2 weeks, so I'll have to wait.
-
It's just not the same without the art deco paint work...

These must be more common than we thought.
-
I sure do channel the Fender Coronado Wildwood series when I look at that.
-
The bass is more appealing if you read the listing in a Boris Badenov voice.
-
These must be more common than we thought.
I've seen at least five on eBay over the last 3-4 years. And a couple of guitars with the same finish. I wouldn't call them rare.
-
Maybe these sales are all a ruse to get rid of a glut of genuine Ukranian cloth shipping bags. :)
-
Sold for $465.
-
Oh, I got a better deal on mine, $325 incl. shipping.
-
See? They are good investment. ;D
-
Cha-ching! ;)

Two others sold last week on eBay for $560 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Orpheus-Orfeus-Hebros-Soviet-USSR-Russian-Vintage-Archtop-ES-335-Bass-Guitar-60s-/180859246336?pt=Guitar&hash=item2a1c0d1700#ht_14646wt_1165) and $600 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rarest-Soviet-Bulgarian-Vintage-ORFEUS-Orpheus-hollow-body-bass-USSR-Sunny-SB-/261006029859?pt=Guitar&hash=item3cc52bf423#ht_2344wt_1165). Either that or there's a pent-up demand for Ukranian cloth bags. ;)
Seriously, where are all these suddenly coming from? Have they been sitting in warehouses for years?
-
No idea, Dave... I'm just glad I got mine for $275.

Backstage at a gig last week.

That must be the rare Chernobylized finish.
These are all coming out of the Ukraine. You and Ronn better test yours with a geiger counter.

The relic Orfeus sold for $300.
I'm looking for the 6-string guitar version of this finish.
