The Outpost Cafe / Advice on selling a vintage Strat..
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:13:20 AM »
For my wife's best, and oldest, friend who has found herself in very hard times.  The Strat belonged to her late brother, a very well known, talented, and troubled musician.  She has held on to this guitar for probably 15 years now but now needs to sell it to survive.  I have not seen it yet but I have the serial number and I do know that it is a 66/67 made in Fullerton.

This is where I need help.  I've sold several things on Ebay and my auctions always go very well but I have never sold anything that could bring in thousands of dollars.  I feel confident that I can document this Strat properly and run a succesful auction but I'm wondering about payment - do I trust PayPal or should I set an escrow account?  I've thought about local consignment as well - anyone have any idea of what the going percentage is to consign a vintage piece?

Obviously I need to get my hands on the guitar and carefully disassemble it to document it and photograph it.  Her brother bought this guitar probably in late 80s early 90's from a well known shop in LA/Hollywood and she believes that she may be able to find the receipt of sell as well as the letter of provenance that describes this as once belonging to Robin Trower.

So, please, I'm open to any and all suggestions - I need to scrape every penny out of this sell that I can.

Kind of a Ric thing.  Looks interesting but the pick guard just isn't quite right.  Still, at first glance, I like it.

Fender Basses / Played a Squire Jaguar today
« on: November 18, 2010, 05:50:04 PM »
I was killing time and stopped in at my GC and low and behold they had two Squier Jaguars.  Fit and finish were fantastic.  The bass probably weighed 8 lbs and it played well.  Very good fret work.  I didn't plug it in as there were no cables in sight and, for once, few of the sales apes to be found.  I am very tempted to go back adn buy it an tell the missus to wrap it for me ;D

One odd thing though - the tone portion of the stacked knobs were detented - probably 10 steps in all ???

I just read about this this evening while reading Fine Woodwarking at Borders - it's a plastic version of Starrett's aluminum dial protractor.  It's not a as useful as the Kreg tool Dave mentioned a while back but for $20 I think it will be nice addition to my toy box. ;)

Just had the wife order it for me.

I know that this was talked about here once - anyone have an Allparts dealership set up?  I've looked at it but I just do not have time for all of the tax junk and shipping of parts.

I've got several things on the back burner and I'll be needing some parts soon and I prefer to keep the money here if possible.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Nut files?
« on: August 21, 2010, 08:09:39 AM »
What are you using?  I see lots of of stuff to cut guitar nuts but it looks bleak, and exspensive, on files that are gauged to cut bass nut string slots.

I'm contemplating what wire to order for my project and I'm wondering what size to order.  I have a 62 Fender reissue, with small frets, which I like and I also like Gibson's modern wire size as well.  Any thoughts?  Doc what are you using?

Ken, no need to chime in here on your favourite size - I know the answer already :P

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Luthier forums

Anyone here know of any good ones?  I know they're out there I would like to narrow down my search.

My current dilema is with my 32" build planning - the fingerboard will be in the neighborhood of 20 to 21 inches and the dual action truss rods are available standard at 18" and 24".  So an 18" rod, installed for headstock adjustment, will have about an extra inch + of unsupported area at the heel.  Doesn't seem like a problem but then again I've not done this before.

Rickenbacker Basses / 4004 pickups/sound?
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:12:57 AM »
Anybody have or played 4004?  The pickups are for sale at the Ric Boutique for $95, thery're the same as the 650 guitar pickups, and the size and appearance will work well for my project but I'm wondering about their tone and power.

Rickenbacker Basses / 3000 tracing request
« on: July 04, 2010, 11:33:55 AM »
Hey guys, I have a wild hair about building a 32" scale project.  I'm thinking something along the Ric 3000 vein:

http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=4126.0

Does anyone here have a 3000 that they can trace for me?  I'll take it on anything that's handy - digital would be even better - I can Paypal you the scan cost and certainly pay postage.  I'd also like an general trace of the peghead a well.

Thanks!

I love the Waterstones and the 32" scale they offer - just not on the four strings.  I've lusted after a Ric 3000 forever but I think the 30" scale as too small for my oversize mitts.  So I have the wild hair about building a single pickup 32" scale project.  I'm thinking string through bridge so as to be able to use regular strings.  I'm considering a Ric style body - though at this point I'm open to anything.  I'll probably go bolt on but perhaps with an extended pocket.

So, am I nuts?  What will I gain or loose buy using this scale?  Obviously there has to be something wrong with it as it hardly exists outside multistring basses.  I'm open to any and all comments - questions about my sanity will be redundant as my family has questioned that for years ;)
