Congrats!

Is that the one with the half mahogany, half maple body?

It's got a AAA Maple top, that's the reason I'm interested in adding yet another EB-3/SG-variation to my collection, other than the main attraction of course.....

Yeah that is beautiful.

But what I meant is: how thick is the maple?

On the Natural Supreme it is very thick. The body is half mahogany, half maple.
In this pic you can see it if you look closely at the sides

Yeah, I got that  but it's hard to tell from the pics. From what I can make out I guess they're the same animal construction wise. Maybe Uwe knows for sure ? If not I'll get back to you once she's arrived .....

It's sandwich half/half and therefore not just cosmetic, but really a different sounding SG bass.

I see those are short scale, too - ought to be a nice playing bass!

I wouldn't have minded them in long scale, but horses for courses!

Thats what happens when you get a SG Supreme with onions & sour cream. Gibson should do a classy version called SG Brougham with a vinyl top.

I had one of these for a little while- and photos just don't do the Fireburst finish justice. Very beautiful bases in person, and the quality was top notch as well. Only reason I sold it was because it felt really tiny in my hands due to the short scale - like a guitar. I really hated to sell it,  but I knew I'd never use it live so off it went. If the short scale works for you - I think you'll be thrilled!

I have the natural version of the Supreme strung up w/GHS Flats. That top layer of maple brings something to the table and you will have a real good time with that upfront TB+ pickup either all by itself or balancing out w/the bridge pup. I actually prefer it to the TBIV which I don't use as much since I have had this for the past years. The TBIV has the looks but this one is comfortable standing or sitting and well balanced. It took me a bit to get used to the natural finish but does not bother me at all. Nice neck width and profile as well. Uwe put it succinctly several years ago in his review of this and I believe said something to the effect that Entwistle would have liked this one.

Yes, it has that snap. The Fireburst, incidentally, is the only Gibson bass to feature Germany's national colors in the right consecutive order: schwarz-rot-gold (nein, nein, not that other flag!!!). A fffery Germänic bass, jawohl!

I'll be sure to sing Alle Menschen Werden Brüder when it arrives .... but I refuse to call her Heidi ..

I didn't get a super deal on her but the asking price was equal to my maximum bid on the last two Firebursts that were on offer on evilBay. I didn't blink once .......

Only thing wrong with her looks are the TRC and the speed knobs. I hate speed knobs ...... now I'll have to make up my mind which knobs to put on her: mirror caps or witch hats ...... decisions, decisions ......  ;)
As for the TRC, I just don't like the lettering they've used so I guess I'll get a blank one. There's no "Supreme" TRCs around in Italic I'm afraid .
Title: Re: Incoming SG Supreme
Post by: Basvarken on January 26, 2011, 03:05:25 AM
I'd go for the mirror caps.
The witch hats aren't exactly ergonomical. They're a PITA to roll off with your pinkie.
Title: Re: Incoming SG Supreme
Post by: Droombolus on January 26, 2011, 04:57:09 AM
I just realised I love the look of the mirror caps on the Elite .... no pinky involved in the decision making process but the conclusion is the same ....

I am not a big fan of the elephant ear tuners. I would prefer some Schallers and right now wondering if they make sets that will just drop in the larger holes. That is the change I would like to make for mine.
Title: Re: Incoming SG Supreme
Post by: Basvarken on January 26, 2011, 01:10:48 PM
I actually prefer the open gear large clover tuners.
They have string posts with a larger diameter, which makes winding the string around the string post easier.
And the big gear wheel allows for a more precise tuning.

The only downside is the fact that they're very heavy, so they enhance the neck dive.
But with Gotoh Res-o-lites that problem is solved too.

Beautiful bass! This and the natural maple top SG bass I suspect will be real collector pieces in time.

Let's hope I've got enough time left then .....  ;D  Always thought I would chuck it all in when I would turn 50 but here I am, going on 60 and still playing in an old fashioned blues-rock band ( amps on 11 and all that shit ). It's really a toss up what will stop me: arthritus or deafness .....

I'll take some pics tomorrow, you impatient lot  .....my cheap-ass camara needs daylight .......

Anyway, pics won't do her justice. It's true, she's much more beautiful live. She hangs on the wall next to the red DA Starfire w/Dark Stars ( and that's a beauty, believe me ) which now looks like an ordinary run-of-the-mill bass in comparison ....... There should be a law ......   :P

Very nice.  I have one with the natural finish.  Installed TI Flats and love it.  I did change the bridge to a HipShot.   Fit in perfectly.  Now we have better adjustment range.

Don't know what you paid, but I got mine from MusiciansFriend.  They had a blow out sale, stupid deal of the day and I had a 20% vip discount.    My price was $720 delivered.   So now MF tries to screw me and they send a blem.  Not a problem for the price, but, I wanted a pristine one.

Yada yada yada, I got them to send me a new one without any damage by threatening to return it.

This is basically the way she's arrived. She's got a set of spaghetti like ( .035 / .095 ? ) strings on her which are to be replaced post haste and a mock-bar is going to be installed of course. The jury isn't in about the "SG" TRC. Somehow it doesn't bother me as much as on the Standard. May have to do with the fleur-de-lis inlay on the headstock. The knobs aren't your standard speed knobs, they're a bit tapered. Me likes a lot better, they may even migrate to my Iba CS once the mirror caps have arrived ........... Hmmmm yeah ........ decisions decisions .....  :-\

Natürlich muss der Bass mit der Kopfplatte nach unten fotografiert werden, damit man unsere Nationalfarben erkennen kann:

It sounds best as an instrumental, at slow pace with lots of strings and little percussion. I hated the way the Nazis turned it into a harsh, hamfisted military march. It's a melancholic song by origin.
