That's harsh, Dave, those were (again) good basses, not the Epi trash from the early seventies.

It's not that bad, I just don't think it's worth more than $200.

Not as a collector's piece, but as a player/tool.

Yes, that's what might be it. Logo looks like a fake to me.

OK.I bought this bass this morning and picked it up this evening. It is 100 percent original! It is however i feel a real early one. There are some differences between this one and later ones.I did a little research and from what i gathered these were mostly mohagany. This one is all maple!including the body, wich is a factory black paint job.the logo is different as well but factory just the same. This i think is a very early production Genesis.HUGE neck and weighs about the same as a kia.....More to come including pics....

Whoa! A US-made Epi in 1983? Set neck? Tell us more.

I take back what I said about the price.

All Genesis basses were set neck, Dave. And mine is maple too. I've read about maho ones, but never really seen one or had confirmation from someone that his specimen is maho. Those basses sound like angry, high-output Rippers to me which indicates that they mostly have an all maple structure.

I've always been curious about those.  USA made is a definite plus.  The Holy Crap bass is the neck-through model Epi did in the '70s, built by Matsumoku(?). The neck on that one is about as beefy as it gets.

BTW - if anyone ever wondered what the Holy Crap bass sounded like, go to 12:25 on the video link

This bass deffinently rolled outta the Gibson Kalamazoo factory! The earlier Genesis was japan and tai,all mohagany with inlayed epi logo,And also had a STAMPED serial with a letter prefix in front!.Notice the big Volute as well. The whole bass is maple! just like an rd artist or ripper bass.same three ply neck sandwich thats typical for this era.Schaller tuners with Gibson stamped on the round gear cover plates.UWE hit the the tone right on the head! Angry ripper,Like dropping a piano lol.The neck is probably the biggest ive ever had my hands on,but oddly enough feels pretty comfy and plays like butter. At 350.00! An absolute steal for that kind of jack!!

My Epi Genesis has an impressed serial number too, 1000636. I never saw that as an indication of a US origin, but you live and learn. The "Epiphone" on the headstock face is an inlay though. Plus the neck is finned in balck just like the body. It has the same volute though and the tuners are identical too. One other difference that strikes me is the heel area is different, on yours it could have been intended for a bolt-on construction until someone changed his mind while mine has more of curved set neck look. Pups, bridge and controls are identical.

Yours reminds me a bit of the lower-cutaway-sawed-off G-3 teardrop prototypes Epi USA played with pretty much around the same time. Headstock logo is reminiscent of those.

yeah. There were actually alot of one offs and prototypes that came out from Gibson in that era.So it wouldnt surprise me.Ive seen a few of the bolt on Epi types and this one wasnt destined to be bolt on. It looks like a ripper or RD cut to me.But like i said the neck is FAT and the body is really thick as well. There is quite a difference between your neck heal and mine though thats for sure. The body on mine looks way thicker than yours does. That would account for the big squared off heal.Thats the beauty of the hand built factor. :)

Body on mine is just under two inches thick.

Well, I'll be out of the market for ANYTHING for a while.  I just had a short notice root canal, along with a replacement crown/bridge.  Insurance will probably deny coverage (missing tooth clause).
