Title: How many 4x10's around here?
Post by: Pilgrim on March 09, 2009, 11:41:52 AM
Idle curiosity - how many people on here use a 4x10 as their primary cab, either with or without a 15 or other add-on?  I suspect that many of us have gone that route.

I have a new GK Goldline 4x10 that's my gig cab. I can add a Peavey 15" cab (with Eminence speaker) if needed, but frankly we're not that loud a band, so there isn't really a need for it most of the time.

I use 4x10s only. First a Kustom Tuck 'n Roll reissue, than an Ampeg, than the Orange and now a Hiwatt with Celestions. No room for an extra 1x15...

do you still get a lot off bottom in your soud with an 4 x 10"?  I use 4 x 12" or 4 x 15" cabs and have little experinence with 4 x 10" played a couple of them on shared backline gigs but just have the idea that a cab with bigger speaker has more "power" in the sound.

I'm in the market for a 4x10. How is the Goldline Pilgrim? I'm looking at either the GK Goldline or BLK for a 4x10.

I'm currently using a Kustom 2x15, and I think its a little too boomy for me.

It's been quite a few years since I've owned 10" speakers in general.  I either use Acoustic 4x15 or 6x12 cabs.  Sometimes I think of going back to a 4x10 for the portability but then I sober up.  ;)

10s? You want 10s?
The one on the left is a 1970s Ampeg B40 with Peavey Scorpion speakers...

I have been using a single Peavey 15, but I didn't get the note definition I started to crave.  I think my ears are becoming more discerning.

I ran into the Goldline at a GC sale last summer, and I compared it with some other 4x10s there.  I think the bottom end is quite strong, and that the overall sound provides low-end guts but preserves note definition.  I personally like the sound of the Hartke metal cone speakers I've heard, and there is obviously something in common with the metal cones in the GK speakers, but I thought the GK cab had a warmer sound than the Hartkes. I suggest doing some side-by-side comparisons with other 4x10s, and I believe the Goldline is a GC exclusive, so they should have others handy to compare with....but the sound was a winner for me.  The drawback is weight, as the cab is around 90 pounds which is on the heavy side for a 4x10.  If I ever need it for a large venue I can pair the GK 4x10 with my Peavey 15" cab..but that's not normally the kind of gig I play.

There aren't many reviews of the Goldline around yet, but since a few of them suggested that longevity of the speakers might be an issue, I bought the GC extended warranty - something I very seldom do. Probably a waste, since I don't really plan to push the cab near its max rating.

If you try out the Goldline, let me know what you think.  I like the sound a LOT.

@ Saf: I have no room in my car for anything bigger than a 4x10. I like 4x12s though. But if I want I have thundering lows with the 4x10, but I always prefer a more pushing mid-ish sound.

I drive an nissan micra and I can get my 4 x 15" cab in the back of it, my amp, two bassguitars and a suitcase with cables etc goes with it as wel. Haven't jet tried to put the bassman 4 x 12" in the car but I think it fits as wel.

Well, I have two GK SBX 4x10's they're the only cabs I use, I think they're pretty articulate and tight, and not boomy.........Definately easier for me to roadie than a single 8x10 (my sissy girlie arms!) and they fit into the Subaru better too.

I used to have an twingo, loved the car. It is sadly passed away last year. I used to transport my bassman 4 x 12" cab, the bassman head, Two of my bassguitars, a combo amp for the banjo player, the banjo and some drumkit gear. It always amazed me how mucht you can put into a twingo. Much more than my micra. (it's my wife's car, I normally drive an daithatsu cuore, I can't get a cab into that one.

Thank you for the info. I went to GC just yesterday, and I tried an Ashdown 4x10, and it seemed too warm for me. It was one of the higher end models. I also tried a Hartke, but I just couldn't dial in the sound i wanted.

They didn't have the Goldline 4x10, but they had the 2x10 and the 8x10, so I played them just to get an idea.

WOW! I found exactly what I was looking for. I played a Mexican P-bass off the wall, and a Gibson SG bass and I got close to perfect on what I wanted out of both the 2x10 and 8x10, tone wise.

I'm still looking at different cabs and makes, but if I can, I'm springing for the Goldline.

Another 4x10 that has been out for a year or so is the Acoustic.  The reviews I've read indicate the Acoustic 200W head is a very strong, loud 200W...but I haven't read much about the speaker cabs yet. Most GC stores carry the Acoustics.

If the Goldlines sound good to you, I'm pleased.  They sound good to me.

I'm using SVT cabs.  Tried the 610, but that one had a ported cab and was a little too boomy for me.  Can't fit the 810 in my car, so I went this route instead - a 410, and a 210 (both sealed enclosure).

There are probably better cabs out there, but I got these used and cheep :), and they sound decent with the Orange

I wouldn't mind trying one of those Berg NV610s someday.

I`ve been using a Hartke 410 for over 10 years now. Great for the kind of gigs (usually small venues) I play.

I can't use 10s, I bought a new Fender combo several years back with 2 10s, blew it up at the 3rd gig. At shows where the backline is provided it's usually an ampeg 8 10 cab, it always sounds too farty to me. Gotta be a 15 for me. I use an Ampeg 1 15 combo, seen here at a show, partially blocked by me.

One way to re-load that Marshall might be to pick up some reconed speakers.  That's what I did when I replaced the rattly Scorpion in my 15" Peavey with an Eminence.  Worked out great and the speaker and shipping were less than a new basket for the Scorpion.

im using a 4x10 hartke powered by a 200 watt valve slave amp and also a jbl e 145 15 inch powered by a warwick wpa 4000 power amp all driven by an ampeg svt2p preamp .works pretty well, the valves warm the aluminium cones a bit and the solid state amp pushes the 15 nicely.i for sure like the sound of them both going though.i found the 4x10 by itself wasnt quite enough bass 'weight' for me.(now i get to enjoy the physical weight when i move all that stuff- ho hum)

I own an Ampeg B40. It's a 4 x 10 inch cab. It came with the V4B head.
The cab is not my favorite. It a bit large to haul around. It is not the most effective cab either. No tight lows.
I get better, deeper and tighter lows out of my Eden D210XLT, which is a 2 x 10 inch  :o

I use a SWR Goliath III first call at the gigs and I still have an old Hartke 410XL sitting in the music room.

But the V4B's dimensions call for an old Ampeg cab underneath! ;D
The B40 is a sealed box, so you won't get lows like a ported cab, at least not with the stock speakers. The Eden has some generous porting, as I recall. Some of the newer design 10' speakers will get down into the 40-50hz range, but even with those the cabinet design won't do what a vented enclosure will (if that's your bag). That said, old Ampegs with 10s (mainly the SVT) weren't designed for deep lows - the concept was to ignore the fundamental frequencies (which were considered problematic in some respects) in order to produce a tone that sounded more focused and balanced in a group context. It's that warm growl that drew me to the old 'pegs in the first place. I always figure that if you're going through the PA, you should be getting the big lows from the system.

+1 here for 4x10s ( and 10s in general ) I'm using two Eden D410T's and two Eden "Airheads" which are 210XLT's with 4 space racks built into them. Of course Eden has seen fit to discontinue all of them ( quite a while back ) but I don't think I'll ever need more than a dozen 10s anytime soon. If I need to really blow things up, I'll drag out the Acoustic 320/408, that with the two Eden stacks might be the rig of doom for me!

I've been using a Peavey Tour 410 cabinet since I bought it at GC back in January for their blowout price of $299.  Very easy on my back (65 pounds) and is rated at 800 watts.  I've got an old Hartke 410 XL in the music room as well as a '70 SVT cab which just stays at home!

Since I got my Sunn Coliseum-300 head, I've been playing around with driving both my new GK GLX 410 cab and my Peavey 1x15 cab...just to drop the impedence to 4 ohms.  Sounds darn nice, but I doubt I'll drag both cabs to any gigs unless it's an outside event.

That is the ONE major drawback of that GLX410.  It sounds great but the 90-pound weight is a pain for moving things around (given my about-to-be 59 year old back).

And even worse, my choices for storing my gear are either up a full flight of stairs or down an equivalent flight.  I have to have my wife take one side and me the other.

I hear ya. I'm a few months from being 57.  I can still bench press about 300lbs but  that is of little value when it comes to moving equipment around. I am disabled due to a lower back injury and moving stuff is murder on me and stairs are a pain even without equipment.
I'm a big fan of lightweight amps :) I love those Eminance neo speakers and 8-10lb  solid state heads. The vintage stuff is nice, but this old vintage SOB likes the new technology  ;)

I had that Fender 2x15 when I was a kid of 17....and used it through age 23 or so.  I remember moving it around a lot myself, although it was a two-man job on stairs.

When I got my bass gear back from my parents' home at age 46, I swore to god that someone had hidden 30 pounds of lead somewhere in that 2x15 cab. I just didn't remember it being that HEAVY.

Of course, I'm completely out of shape and trying to work back in...starting to spend time on the elliptical and the weight machine downstairs.  Fortunately my back is good, although all it takes is one careless lift and it reminds me I'm not 17 any more.  My problem is feet...even with custom orthotics, I can walk about 9 holes (2.5 miles) and I'm hurting at that point.  Too bad, because I used to spend a lot of time walking.

At least the 4x10 has rollers!  It got them about 30 minutes after I picked it up at the store.
