As Paul Boyer has noted, after 25 years the 4004 is not listed in the new price list.

Rickenbacker Basses / Here we go again... the S/5 is back

RIC's official facebook page: "Who's ready for NAMM next week?"

Assuming the TRC is the standard dimensions, my guess is string spacing is still tight (5 strings crammed in a 4 normal neck) and consequently a 5-saddle bridge in a modified tailpiece.

The Outpost Cafe / Where's the 1

Here is a fun game. Songs that when you first heard them you were sure you know where the 1 was, and then realized it's not.

I'll start.

Rickenbacker Basses / One-offs (?) on RIC's fb page

Rickenbacker Guitars (Official)'s facebook page profile pic now shows 4 basses, of which 3 are custom colors: British Racing Green w/checkerboard binding (the coolest imho), gold (not Desert Gold) 4003S, and Walnut (ATG?) with a rosewood pickguard and TRC and dark triangular inlays on a maple fretboard.

Fender Basses / Advice needed - 70s P neck on a new Aerodyne body?
« on: December 08, 2017, 08:53:41 AM »
For my fretless project - saw this Aerodyne body on eBay - does anyone know if the pocket will fit a vintage 70s P neck?

IMHO that is how a 70's maple-neck P sounds at its absolute best (I think he has a DiMarzio there). And some great bass playing.

Other Bass Brands / Sire V7 w/Sadowsky guts
« on: September 10, 2017, 12:39:45 AM »
I met a friend yesterday and he had an interesting bass.

He likes boutique basses and has owned several Sadowskys (as well as Smith, Fodera and F-Basses) in the past. He wanted to see if he can get close to a Sadowsky for a fraction of the price.

So he bought a $499 Sire V7 - that's the 4-string J variant with a bound rosewood board and block inlays - and replaced the stock pickups and preamp with Sadowsky units. He had about $850 into the bass in total.

The result, I'd say 90% Sadowsky. The sound is unmistakably Sadowsky. The bass itself is nice and lightweight, plays very well and is getting soon a new nut and bridge to make it almost perfect. I liked the glossy neck but he doesn't and is going to have the back of the neck de-glossed.

Really not bad for $850.

We were lucky to try it out with an awesome vintage SVT with its two cabinets.

Sorry no pics because I'm stupid and didn't take any. But imagine a stock Sire V7 in sunburst with 4 knobs instead of 5.

Other Bass Brands / NBD '65 blonde Höfner Senator bass
« on: August 29, 2017, 11:39:31 PM »
Took delivery yesterday.

Today I'm going to install NOS correct tuners. The neck is stable and straight - no need for a reset job this time. Also needs a correct w/b/w nut (actually just a string spacer) just for aesthetic reasons, and a new bridge - someone filed grooves in the original bridge. Large bodied basses used a longer guitar bridge (3" between height adjustment screws) with 4 instead of 6 fret pieces, not the usual violin bass shorter bridge type.

The neck is 3-piece, like the '60 500/3. My '64 Senator is 2-piece.

With a TI JF344 set, the bass sounds significantly brighter than my '60 500/3 and '64 Senator, both unplugged and amped. A bit too bright for my taste but I'll let the flats age as they should.

In the immortal words of Nigel Tufnel: It's like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.
