I'm putting Pinky back up for sale. Bruce Johnson emailed last week to let me know my Ampeg scroll bass is being painted and should be ready to ship by the second week of Oct. Something has to go and of the few basses I have, Pinky is the least regularly played. I know everyone here is familiar with this bass so I'll just post some new pics. I'm looking for $2260.00 shipped and insured. This is what I paid for it back in April. Would prefer a check or MO but will except Paypal if necessary. I'll probably shortly list this on TB within a day or two as I'm trying to move it rather quickly and I seemed to be the only seriously interested party here when Mark had it up for sale.

I'd love it but I just can't swing it right now. In six months I'll be in a much better position.

How long have you been waiting for the Scroll bass?

Someone should Tell Tom Petersson.....
-
Dammit Baz you do beautiful work .......................sigh.
-
Since 3/21/12.
what model scroll are you getting??? AMB 2????
only 18 months - not bad for Bruce. He has never met a scheduled delivery date ever. Kind of dealing with a combo OCD and creative geniuos. Bad combo for time schedules.
-
Yes AMB-2, #006. How are you liking yours Jim?
-
That is one of the coolest basses I've seen here at the Outpost. Hope it stays in the family somehow!
-
Indeed a very nice 8 string bass 8)

Thanks Scott!!! Actually....this was my first custom build.....I had a LOT of help....and I tell you all this....it was a Mother Trucker of a Big Bad-Ass bass!!! I would love to build another Futura 8 or 12ver...and slso a full on Korina 4 string....
Someday.....
-
I still have the can of paint!!!!!!
-
I'm going to have to list Pinky on eBay soon. I've had no real interest other than an offer to trade for a custom pink Warwick.
-

mine is back with Bruce. Several issues resulting in some design changes especially with the pickup and how it is installed. When i had it i loved it. sounded great. close to the SSB you sold me but even better.
-
I do notice that endearment with 8 string basses subsides once people actually have one. :-\

My selling Pinky is primarily financial. I need to pay for my Bruce Johnson. It sounds fantastic but it is, for me anyway, a specialty instrument rather than an everyday player. Wish I could keep it but I can't afford to at this time.
-
There is a reason why these beasts did not conquer the bass world. Speciality instrument is damn right.
-
How many bass-type instruments with 6 strings or upwards do you own, Uwe...

Speak for yourself. After 9 years of trying to get back my old Hamer Thunderbird 8 string (Which is why I started building basses...to attempt to replace it....) I LOVE Mine!!!! And Plan on Building more....Mr. Petersson thinks I build better basses than Hamer. Thanks Tom!
-
Pinky sold on ebay....to Jeff Ament. How cool is that!? It think it's going to a good home.
-
Wow. That's cool. Now He and Tom will have matching basses!!! Well..I din't make it as a bass player...but I'm close as a builder!!!
-
No doubt it'll come by Mike's shop for a visit - he's seen it before and liked it!
-
Tell Him I'll be making more Multi string basses.
-

EB-6 EB-2 shape
EB-6 SG-shape
Ric 4003S/8
Musicvox Spacecadet 12-string
Gibson Les Paul Standard 8-string (custom built for TM Stebvens).
I have yet to scale the heights of national or international fame and superstardom with anyone of them.
-
Well...ya Gotta git off yer Butt and PLay LIVE more often, instead of being an attorney!!! LOL!! Just kidding...How do you like that rick 8 string?? I borrowed Tom Heslin's for a few weeks a while back...VERY cool bass!!!!

It took me 3 years to get my AEB-2 from Bruce, and I paid in full up front. He's always courteous, full of info, and makes a gorgeous bass. It was well worth the wait. It took a long time for the BaCH birds, too. I think I got both within a few weeks of each other. It was an exciting summer!
-
Far out that thing is super cool. I hear what Uwe is proclaiming, but gee it's a looker. GLWTS.
-
It plays great and sounds Like Mother F@#K3R!!!!!!!

Excluding a certain "Cheap" player, has anyone else done anything significant...? I can't think of anything or anyone...

Queen's X????

Nick Lowe used a 8 string with Dave Edmunds on occasion
-
True enough... saw him use one with Rockpile a few times...
Not familiar with Queens X though Baz... any vids...?
-
What about JPJ post LZ?
-
I meant Kings X just being funny...
-
Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam uses, or used, a 12-string I believe.
-

dUg Pinnick playing the hell out of a Hamer Chaparral longscale 12er.

notice a very young john stewart making the introduction.

It's "The John Stewart Show" so that makes sense.
-
Jack Blades also used an 8-string with Damn Yankees.
-

What's wrong with that then? Sometimes you need one for just a one song like Jeff Ament needs the 12-string if they play "Jeremy" - it doesn't sound right on a 4-string.
-
I don't think they are knocking them but saying the truth. They do not fit in every situation or band. Listen to Jpj solo music. Adding other instruments to his multi string songs would clutter the music in my opinion.
Just my opinion.
I really love the sound by the way.
-
Lemmy's made a career out of making fours strings sound like eight... ;D

Wasn't there a Hagstrom 8 string on Axis: Bold As Love?
-
Wasn't there a Hagstrom 8 string on Axis: Bold As Love?
Yes, on "Spanish Castle Magic" and "You've Got Me Floatin'", at least.
Chris Squire have used an 8-string every now and then. "Changes", "Safe", "Going For The One", "Awaken" (studio only) etc. He tunes the D- and G -pairs to fifths.
-
I'm having a blast with my 8-stringers.
I had reservations about tying up any money in one, figuring that it was a niche instrument and all... I tested the water years ago with an '80 Ibanez - my first 8er... then picked up a 4003s/8 last year... and now I'm scrambling to find funds for a gorgeous BCR Bich Supreme 8 string that I have a shot at. So if it works out, I'll have one in short, medium and (almost) long scale :) Never had an opportunity to try one, but I also GAS for a B12S...
They're not for every situation, but I've found them to be a lot of fun in their own right. I play them quite a bit at home, especially when its just me and my son (bass and drums), and I've been gigging the Ric with the band from time to time.
Cheers and good luck with the NR sale!
-
Just received a live recording of an old band of mine from 1982. I was playing my first 8-string, a Hondo, sounds good. I remember that bass receiving quite a lot of attention back then.

Let me know if Jeff Gives you any Feedback or recording or pics!

I will Baz. He sent me a note saying he was looking forward to playing it and hope it sounded as good as it looks. I haven't heard from him since it arrived but they are touring so he may not have seen it yet.
-
Thanks!!
-
Baz playing in the big leagues...................again! Your work is amazing bro keep at it.
-
Had a look around Google didn't see any of Jeff with the Pinky yet......
But, I did get to see this one (of MANY) at the shop not too long ago at Mike's shop.

Thanks guys...Haven't had any work lately which means NO Money...but...One of these days...I'm going to Git back to building...I have to...I have that 200 watt Hiwatt Monster rig!!!
-
Baz does GREAT work.....I've had SIX of his builds!!!!
And Jeff has, three Hamer 12vers, I believe. A one-off DuoTone Bass version. That's the Hamer guitar model with a piezo bridge and a hum buckler, so you can switch between electic/acoustic or combine them. Jeff had a bass version made but I heard it was with mixed results.
He also had his B12A "Jeff Ament" model. Plus I sold him another one that I had that had a pao ferro fingerboard.
He also had a Hamer 8-string B8A that he did his own custom graphic on and then, I believe Hamer clear coated.
Plus he has that oversized TBird body that Mile Lull made, with a bolt-on Hamer 12ver neck.
When he had that one made, he told me that he still had his Hamers.
Hamer really DOES make the best 12ver necks hands down!!!! Stable dual-truss necks with decent neck profiles. It's a shame Hamer wouldn't make those necks separately and we have to keep destroying complete Hamer 8- and 12vers to steal the necks and hardware....but I've never liked their Chaparral, body shape, so sticking them onto exact copies of Hamer TBird bodies is a definite improvement IMO. Hamer "improved" on the TBird design by moving the neck joint out a couple of frets and then thickening up the body for a little more weight, for better balance. I think the cutaway is slightly larger for easier access as well. They had a prior relationship with Gibson, so they didn't get sued back when they were making them, like so many other companies did who made Gibson-ish designs.

Thank you, Jon!! I appreciate your compliments as well as your, Scott!! I know Shark Loved my basses, as did Mark and then Tom P. I can only hope that I can acquire money and inspiration to build more!

The White Bird was completed end November 2012. Waited nearly TWO years for it.
The CAR Bird came up on the HFC a couple of month later. Seems like someone else had a Thunderbird 8 String vision either ....
-
Time to move this thread since it stopped being a For Sale post a few months ago.
AFAIK Hamer production is still suspended.
-
Hi all. I never heard from Jeff after shipping the bass. No feedback on ebay either. Not yet anyway. Seeing those three beautiful Hamers of course makes me wish I didn't sell it. Especially the blue sparkle II in the middle. Hey Baz how does the Hamer 8 neck compare to the Warmoth you used on Pinky?
-
Sorry for hi-jacking this older thread but Shark still loves your basses ... ;D
I like your taste in pickups! Bet that white one screams.
Is the blue sparkle a Baz build? Is that an Orville pickup in it?
Beautiful basses!
-
The Blue Sparkle Hamer KILLS!!! I Loved that bass...But I got Old Red back so I didn't need her any more.. The Hamer is Better than the Warmoth, but the Warmoth was Killer for sure. And al of my bass build usually had Orvilles in them..that was when I had a steady flow of cash coming in. Been broke for a few months...missed a few opportunities to buy parts...figure maybe in a couple of years I can get back on my feel and maybe eventually start playing agin and start building basses again...but it will be a while...

Yes, the blue sparkle and the greenie are Baz build. The Great White is a factory custom order.

Tom Petersson saw a picture of the 12ver I made, Shark and was interested in it!
-
Is the headstock on the green one a converted 12ver? Cool looking layout. What served as the donors for the necks and bridges?
After experiencing the B12S, I'm already starting to eyeball stuff to sell to fund a B4S (assuming I could someday find one). Its a shame they went under.

Yes the green one is a original 12ver but I'm more into 8 strings these days.
Changed also the tuner heads on all three to save some weight on the neck.
