My Daughter got her first Jazz bass yesterday

 I had to take Char out of school for a Dr. appointment yesterday, afterwords we stopped at the House of Guitars so she could check out basses. She has had a Hofner copy for quite sometime and has been using my Peavey Fury to practice for Jazz band. Once she got a look at my J bass she really wanted one of her own. we looked at MIM Js fretted and fretless (she plays upright in the orcestra). The bass that really caught her eye was a Standard Squier Jazz bass. She loved the red to black sunburst ! It was such fun to see the look on her face when I said we could buy it, she just lit up. Reminded me of when my Dad took me to the HOG for my first bass, I hope she remembers the day as fondly as I do. I'll get a picture of her playing it. The butcher is a loving and caring father, I knew it all along. But couldn't he have selflessly bequeathed that JD Jim Lea Sig to her? It's not like the Dasson house is running out of basses, you know ...   

I understand the Jazz Bass appeal to Char though. Not coming from a Fender fan's mouth, the Jazz Bass has no doubt the most elegantly feminine shape of all bass classics.

 She will get the Jim Lea bass....................... eventually. She has played most of my bases, EB3s, Tbirds, Fenders etc. She really focused in on the J so why fight it ? If she wants a Gibby down the road she can have one. To be honest I am glad she has a Fender, they are sturdy and reliable and the Squier is surprisingly well made. I still believe nothing tells people you are serious about bass like pulling out a Fender. Over the years I experienced quite a bias against my Gibsons.

This made me laugh. I'm way down numbers-wise but there are still a few basses and guitars in my house. I put it that way because, according to the 4 year old, they're ALL his!

Great idea Scott... definitely a chip of the old block, dear boy... your mentioning that she plays an upright in the school band reminded me of my first taste of the ole' four-stringer when I had to stand on a stool (no reference to anything yaht may be running elsewhere, please, lets maintain a little decorum on this one... ) to reach the neck properly... I went from 5'7" to 6'1" between '75 and '76 and was always one of the geeks that used to get picked on... of course, I'm fully adjusted these days...

She's hip to the jazzz daddy-oh, she's godda go ffffffretlessss mannnnnn...

if she enjoys playing and takes it seriously, then you may disagree, but a fretless Jazz al la Jaco would be much more demanding to play and master which may give her a good target to aim for...

My daughter posed with the Tequilabird when she was quite small (probably 4 or 5, she's 15 now and enjoys messing about with my MIDI setup, but presently daddy hasn't fixed it...) but the pics not scanned in yet, I'll dig it out and post if this keeps going...

very cool Scott! My son went off the reservation and I had to get him a guitar when he was 14 or so.  No bass for him.
