Title: Which one of your basses has the most Mojo and why?
Post by: Freuds_Cat on December 01, 2008, 11:49:39 PM
You can only pick one folks and Pics would be good if you can.

Also you get even more points if the mojo is your own  ;)

It gets alot of my lovin'
Front doesn't show much in this pic but it's very sweat stained, because - well I sweat, and it must be toxic. The top of the upper 'bout is quite stained, and it's got many dings and dents all over it's once lovely body. The 9 ply is shrinking at dissimilar rates so you can easily see it underneath the paint, the neck also shrank a little, leaving the fret ends a bit exposed - Mike Lull fixed this.

As you can see it's backside has seen some better days yet I love this bass, I'm it's only owner since it was new back in 1989 when I paid $880.00 for it ( I raised some of the $$$ needed by selling my late father's M-1 Rifle!)

Thats one sweet lookin T-bird Mark.  I wish basses like that were affordable in Oz. Unfortunately basses like that cost between Aus$2000 and $3000.

'53 Gibson. The year I was born.

The long awaited pics of her made lefty have finally been taken....

"Is that a Beatle Bass?" people ask.
I tell 'em, "No, she's a Zep Bass~ a Mountain Mama!"

Here's the old strap peg hole, as yet Unplugged:

Banjo tuners:

Ain't she a beaut?

I've dialed in the sound so she's playable now, but she hums a bit.
Don't play her a lot. Got her for the MOJO.

If we can make it thru this Recession/Depression together I'll have Doc Dolan move those knobs South & make her forever Southpaw.

It would have to be the Holy Crap bass.  Not a lot of wear and tear on it, but definitely the one that's had the most love put into it.  The Bettie Page is already starting to show signs of regular use.  Like Mark, I tend to sweat, and it's pretty acidic.

My 1963 P, bought in 1967, stored from 1973-1996, and back in my hands.  I'm not a believer in mojo, but I have a strong sentimental attachment to it. It's just a good ol' bass.

Some pretty nice basses in here. Mine is not so nice :)

Ibanez Blazer circa 1981-1982, all maple I believe. Bought it for $200 new during a closeout sale before the Blazers went out and the Roadstar IIs came in.  Stock pickup replaced with Alembic Activator.  Alembic J pickup added later at the bridge... did the routing myself, rather sloppily.  Pickguard sawed down by hand to just the control area... rather sloppily. Note additional chunk of badly-hand-cut black pickguard added later for the pickup blend control.  Dunlop straplocks countersunk into the body using a big drill bit.  20th and 21st frets missing - around 1985 or so I briefly felt inspired to switch to fretless - an inspiration which vanished after only two frets. Thank god I started at that end of the neck :-)
Puke paint job done in my nineties postpunk era when I got tired of the stock Candy Apple.

I haven't played it much lately but it was my only bass for about 18 years.  This thing sounded pretty darn good.
Here's a clip from one of the albums I played it on... http://www.reacharms.com/mp3/someplace_we_can_go.mp3

That's my mojo offering - an '86 Aria SB Elite-II.  I scored it pretty cheaply when I was about 16.  It was used, but in mint condition (pearl white, gold hardware) when I got it; however, I found its sound had too much "honk" for me at the time.  A couple years passed, I managed to eradicate its unique voice with an active SD setup, attack it with aircraft stripper, add some black Schaller hardware, and gig it in this band for a couple years:

Ha, here's my Post Punk Puke Paintjob:

Love it!

Chromium, I like that Aria as well. I've occasionally thought of stripping mine but eh, seems a lot of bother and would only uncover the horrors I've done to the wood.

The color is a Ford gold metallic from around 1972.  The bass was Olympia white (the best I can recall) when I got it in 1967,but the finish was all chipped up and I've never liked damaged finishes.  I had it re-painted around 1972 by a local body shop and the color I liked best was some contemporary Ford metallic.  It's not that different from Fender's colors, but a bit darker - and Leo used auto paint anyway, so I figure he'd have approved.

The bass was left behind at my parents' when I moved from Washington to southern Oregon after college.  It stayed at home while I moved from OR to WA, earned a Master's, got married, moved to TX and built my career.  Finally in 1996 my parents had to move from the country house to a smaller one in town.  It was time to pick up all the old stuff or dump it.  I retrieved my P-bass, Bassman head and 2x15 cab, but unfortunately I was still in Texas and didn't have a way to move my old white plywood King upright bass.  Had to sell it...and of course, now I wish I had it back.  Getting that P-bass back got me back into music, and I started playing in a band at age 50 - the last time I had played in a band was in my home town at age 23.

Mark,

I don't know what I would want more... an M1 rifle or a T-bird.

Since I have numerous rifles and no T-birds the choice should be obvious.

All a matter of priorities...............Nothing wrong with owning the M-1, except it would have been a lot of work to enjoy it. At the time I only had a 4001 Ric and really wanted another bass, by accident a local music store's ad caught my eye, they had listed the white '89. I hadn't seen a 'Bird anywhere in Seattle for years, I went there that day and put $$$ down on it, then went off and sold some things - bye,bye M-1 Hello White Thunderbird  ;D

My 1987 Heritage Bass.  I don't know which owner I am.  I'm pretty sure the owner before me acquired it through dishonest means, but I don't know that for a fact.  Regardless, I usually say that to give the thing a little more mystique.  I have the missing pick up, and the cover for the electronics laying around somewhere, dunno where.  Needs a nut and a head stock repair to be back in business.  I have no clue as to the woods, though I believe the neck to be maple.  It's very very light, my old guitarist remarking once that it was lighter than his strat.  I keep meaning to get it spun back into action, but it's not a very high priority right now.

A 1975 Precision that's been my favorite for many years.  I bought it from a co worker when I worked road construction for $150.  Neither he nor I knew what it was really worth.

Well, then you and I were there about the same time! Wonder if we went to the same schools????

For those of you won don't know, Pullman WA is an unusual town - it has 27,000 people but 18,000 of them are college students. The nearest town that's larger is Spokane, 80 miles north.  Pullman IS WSU. There aren't many small college towns left with major (D-1, PAC-10) universities in them - Pullman is one of the few.  No one spends time in Pullman without some kind of connection to WSU.  It's a fantastic place to grow up, and it runs over with college spirit.

MY dad took a teaching position at Wazzu in 1960 when I was 10.  I attended Edison school (no longer there) for 6th grade, was in the first class in Lincoln Jr. High (since torn down and replaced by a new building) and graduated from the old Pullman High on Main street in 1968.  Went to WSU (as did all four kids in my family) for a B.A. in Broadcasting...kicked around for a few years, found myself back in Pullman and earned a Master's in Adult Ed in 1979.  Got a faculty-equivalent position producing educational radio & TV programs at WSU.  Went to Texas A&M 1985-98, and got involved with WSU Alumni during that time.  Was alumni director for Colorado for six years, then was elected to office, now am Past President of the Alumni Association.  I'm a Coug for life, my wife is a Coug, and my kids are Cougs even though they attend universities in Colorado. So yeah, I think I come by that WSU connection pretty honestly.

More evidence: here's a photo of my left wrist - this graphic has MORE mojo than most of the basses here!  For the uninitiated, the Cougar head also contains the letters W-S-U left to right.  When you wear it in plain sight, no matter where you are in the world, you will hear people yell "Go, Cougs!"

Whoa,

Didn't mean to steer the thread in a bad way, but its just a "small world" kind of thing!
My late father was the caretaker of the Wash. National Guard Armory in Pullman, and I spent 2 summers there with my brothers (my folks were divorced) climbing on WWII vintage 6x6's and newer jeeps that had 105mm recoiless rifles mounted on them, all while learning how ride a bike, swim or pile into our '59 VW for a fishing trip to the Snake River. Anyway the good Mr.Pilgram probably played little league baseball against my older brothers - a most pleasant coincidence to find this out some 40 odd years later. And while I didn't attend WAAZU, the Cougs are always my choice in the Apple Cup   :toast:

How often do you still play it John?

Almost every time I do any recording which is at least once or twice a week. I am always trying to be working on something. It's been knocked off it's stand several times by drunken / clumsy guitarists, so most of the clovers on the tuners are bent (long ago). Although I am finding my Blueshawk bass to be filling it's shoes (Kahler duties)

Here's my second-most-mojo bass (if I believed in Mojo), an early 70's Univox which plays great!! I like the sound and the short scale, and I think the 'burst and wood are gorgeous.

For those of you won don't know, Pullman WA is an unusual town

Coincidentally, I spent a couple weeks one summer (1986?) in nearby Albion, WA, population 500 or so at the time.
I was a teen back then, visiting my best friend whose dad had moved from suburban NY to suburban Redmond, WA, but he opted to instead move in with his artsy lesbian mom in Albion. There were like two punk rockers in Albion that summer and he was one of them. Me, I was just a dork whose saving grace was playing bass.  His mom's girlfriend loaned me a Peavey of some sort to plunk around on while I was there. We had a fairly good time in a really boring town...  I don't remember much about Pullman though except that we went there for a movie one night.

Man, I lived halfway between Pullman and Albion.  It's just a tiny bedroom community.  When you're in a suburb of a town of 27,000 you're REALLY in a small town.  Two weeks stuck in Albion would be a month anywhere else.

And thanks for the kind words on that Univox.  I have two basses from the Matsumoku factory - that Univox and a Lyle that I've been messing around with but haven't put a pickup in yet.

It's a lousy pic but the bass is a walnut-colored hollowbody with a single pickup cavity. It has binding on the body and neck, and offset dots on the neck to mark positions. I have an original pickup for it, and a chrome-cover Gretsch pickup as well - haven't decided which to use.  I also have an original Univox tailpiece with rosewood insert, and a correct bridge, I just keep not getting around to finishing it.  Been sitting for 2 years.  I think that Matsu factory did some of the very nicest work coming out of Japan - the same techs were putting out Epiphone at the same time in the early 70's.

I'm really sorry when it comes to fixing basses - I keep finding other things to do first.  Dr. Bassman does more bass repair in a weekend than I do in six months.

I dig my LPB-1.  Acoustically, the combination of mahogany body, mahogany neck, and ebony fretboard is just magic.  Weighs a freakin' ton though.

It's the model of the Bartolini.  They make a number of different Precision pickup replacements.  The 8S is the passive one that has been around the longest, IIRC.

This is my Klira Twen Star 162-1 from 1966. It's definately got the most Mojo of all of my Klira's. It's not only a great playing and sounding bass, it's definately very unique in its shape as well.

Yes, that's the LPB-1.  A pic of mine is here:

I mentioned it because Skate Rat posted a picture of his red one, which looks pretty similar other than the color.

Hey, Skate Rat, we're neighbors! I'm in Brooklyn too (Prospect Heights).

I think my '76 Thunderbird is still the bass for me.

I always wanted a Thunderbird, but I didn't knew how it played and sounded. There was one in a local shop for cheap, but it was battered like hell. Holes where drilled for extra switches, a piece of wood was nailed (!) on the entire lenght the body as a finger rest and I think they used it in a Robin Hood film as a bow. Of course strings where dead, and it had a lot of issues. I still bought it and of course it was a major dissapointment. I had someone to fill up the holes, but it still sounded and played bad. Then my luthier took care of it and.... Wow! It still is the worst looking '76er around, but it's totally my bass. I do all the recordings with it and I actually feel better and I feel more secure playing that bass. I feel like a GI in an old war movie having an M16 at the hip and no one ca do anything to me:) I'm just more myself with that bass. It belongs to me. Of course some mojo is added by one or more previous owners, but I did too:)
It stays better since an unknown sugar uncle send me a 70s case for it:)

If I had to sell some of my basses, of course I would feel bad. But I would be happy with only the Bird and maybe a cheap back up. (BaCH).

The only time I felt totally okay with a bass was with Uwe's blue nonrev. I dunno why, but that bass felt immediately good too. The BaCH comes close, but of course it has a lack of mojo which will come over the years.

my olympia abg has a satin finish. on the back of the neck and portions of the top the finish has been polished off from the oil in my hands through constant playing. if a bass saturated in your own dna does not spell mojo i don't know what does. ;)

30 years of working together as my main bass. Lots of sweat, a bit of blood and a heap of hard knocks. Still the most comfortable and all round best sounding bass I have ever played.

keep the mojo going!

I can't make a choice. About the mojo, got some basses who have mojo because of the wierd shapes, basses that are so ugly that they are so goddamn cool, basses that are so beaten down that's they have ton's of mojo.

If I had to pick only to basses out of my collection it would be these two. The first one named "het block"  I was building together with my father. He suddenly died in building process. So it is never finished they wat we intended. It should be firetruck red with a black binding. After my father passed away I connect the pup and on saterday after the funeral I was playing on stage with this bass. It has seen many stages over the last 4 years.

The other one is my totally beaten up '74 musicmaster bass. It's ha sdings, scratches etc all over the place. But this bass is mine. I think my hands are grown exactly so that they match this bass. Of all the basses I got this is the one I pick up the most. This one get played one every day. I'm even thinking of getting a tattoo with a picture of this bass. That's how much I like her.

The "Pink Nightmare"

To give a serious answer I'd say my Fenderbird has the most MOJO of all my basses.

And then there's "The veteran"

Aside from the body NOTHING is original on that guitar and if that body could speak... It has dings and cracks everywhere but all of it honest and there's no other guitar in the world that means THAT much to me.

My '75 Fender P (maple neck) has the most mojo. That was my first really good Fender (I had two P's before it, but they were the heavy non-resonant late-70's type). For many years it was my only bass and was played A LOT. When I bought it in 1990, it was near mint, now it looks like a relic. No mods, just honest players wear.

My EB-2. Dual large mudbuckers and stereo outs. Bought it in 1990 for $200.

Given the large soft spot that I and Dr. Bassman have for hollow-body basses, I think this one generates as much envy on my part as any bass in this thread.  And that's not to say there aren't many wonderful, interesting basses.  I console myself with thoughts of my Univox hollow-body and plans to resurrect the tobacco-brown Lyle HB (both shown on page 3 of this thread).

It's an cheap chinese made mayhill les paul look a like that I bought for 30 euro's. It now has an GFs P90 in de neck and an old Humbuckers from a 80's washburn falcon in the bridge. The tailpiece is from an old egmond akcoustic guitar. It's sounds just as awfull as it looks, but I like it. I did a relicjob on it. But I went to far with some stressmarks. De headstock is partially burnt away. I really like this guitar because I can do whatever feels right at the moment and don't feel any regrets afterwards

My Peter Cook narrowly tops my RD, purely because I've had her longer (over 30 years now) and she's suffered more abuse than any of my other instruments, covered in knocks, dents, scratches, cracks, bits missing, but still my opening instrument...

My RD is having her own party at present but my other bass, a Hohner Jack, has just got such playability, and really suprised me in her value for money stakes, bought as a back-up after the RD "died" - easily as good a sound as my other too, and can, quite literally, go through walls... nicknamed her "the pin-cushion" for no reason I can think of at present...

Gonna sneak my SG in for an honourable mention in the above and beyond the call of duty award for the abuse she has received - vicious sound...

Never did get round to that refin...

@ Ken, On what amp are you playing? The one in your background on the petercookbird picture?

@Freuds_Cat - my guitar.... I'm not so fond of les pauls and this one hell of an el cheapo 80's plywood thing. It couldn't get any worse. It sounds somewhat decent now. I also have an heavely abused strat.

Thanks man, I don't gig it much anymore just 'cause I love it so much and don't want anything to happen to it, the neck is even still in one piece, a rarity for these basses. It still makes an appearance at home tho', here's my son Keith checking it out.

Saf... that's my "DR103-SWITCH", which created a little bit of excitment over on the Vintage Amps site (which is where Chris lassooed me and brought me over here)... Built by Mr Reeve's his-self, back in 1970, although I did not know that until this year, reputedly belonged to a guitarist in Savoy Brown until around 1972 (Lonesome Dave of Foghat...? Kim Simmonds used to use Marshalls, but no confirmation) I have owned her for 30 years. I also have a project rebuild 1968 Marshall 50W which looks like what is called a "Smallbox"... both amps need some work; that cab is what is left of a 1969 Marshall 412. you'll find both of them detailed for the "VALVE-HEADS" under the same name as the amp - the excitement was that she is a new name that no-one had heard of before re HIWATT's - most of the type were called DR103S or DR103SAP, mines called a "SWITCH"... A wonderful sound and good for both bass and guitar...

Skate Rat - Interesting that you have Guild pups on that Ripper. I played my friends Ripper a couple of years ago and it reminded me a lot of a long scale version of my '73 Guild JSII.

I dig my LPB-1.  Acoustically, the combination of mahogany body, mahogany neck, and ebony fretboard is just magic.  Weighs a freakin' ton though.

That's so weird when I hear people say that. My LPB-1 is my lightest long scale bass!
