I've had a few requests for NRs and 5 strings so I've done these prototype/mockups.
If at first you don't succeed...get somebody else to do the work. CNC that is. 4 and 5 string, glued in or bolt on necks, new bridge/tailpiece. 1 1/4" African mahogany bodies standard, genuine mahogany optional.

new bridge /tailpiece first proto, individually adjustable heights, lengths and string spread.

Looks good! I like that you made the 5 string headstock a 3+2. Never liked the looks of the 4+1 styles.

Nicely done! Did you make the bridge?

Thanks!
It's a standard Allparts neck but it will have a slight mod similar to the 4 string Cataldo headstock and Hipshot Ultralite clovers.

I'd been thinking about a bridge/ tailpiece for a while. The guts of the bridge are similar to the JAEbird's. The saddle carrier and tailpiece are aluminum extrusions. I'll take pix of the next ones I build.

i'm liking that Mahogany body and set neck Carlo. nice!!!!

Thanks, Sniper. The accuracy of the CNC it really cuts down on the work necessary to get everything lined up perfectly. My pin router is now relegated to pick guard duty. The necks aren't glued in yet, just dry fitted but they are TIGHT.
-
Nice! Are these new bridges going to be standard on the JAEbirds as well?
-
Very nice!
-
nice. someone else besides me gonna take the prototype ?? :-\
-
Very nice looking rigs. Ever think about doing a short scale model with the same body? I have short arms and the short scale works better for me. Maybe even a 5 string?
-
You taking the 4 or 5er?

Thanks! On the JAEbird Custom, definitely. I may go to a one piece on the Standard to keep prices down.

Thanks! I've thought about doing a short scale 4 but the demand doesn't justify the R&D time and $$. I think 34" scale is the minimum for 5 strings. I don't build my necks and don't know of any short scale 5 string necks that are available.

I really appreciate the interest! I was shooting JAEbird #0026 this AM before sending it out. The light was great so I shot the NR4 again. I hope we can work something out so I can supply your P/Gs as an option, Scott.

Carlo, Pick guards should not be a problem :)

Great work! What is the cost of one body and bridge?
-
Great work! What is the cost of one body and bridge?
Thanks! None of this is mass production, it's done one at a time including bodies which have a lot of non CNC work and the bridges which involve a lot of hand labor. So most likely what I would have to charge would seem excessive.
Parts sold separately almost always cost more than they do as a percentage of a complete product.
Here's the plan I drew for the body, the grid is 1 inch (25,4mm). I hope this helps.

just noticed the extra fret. eventually all of my wishes will be incorporated.. IMHO they all made sense to bring the birds to modern day acceptable/excepted features of a bass.

That 4 string neck is a crap Chinese one I hacked up. Unfortunately Allparts only sells LH Jazz 21 fret necks. I know that's not your thing, Jim...but I am talking to a neck builder who can supply me with whatever a customer wants, including scale, shaft and fret board wood, profile, frets, fretboard radius and a tilt angle headstock of any design. I'm looking forward to that. We've also discussed a full on through neck '64 Reverse replica.
The Fiver does have the extra fret.

Reversed the reversed headstock in Photoshop

The brigde and tailpiece looking pretty awesome.

Got an order for a Fiver over the holidays. I'm using a Scott pick guard and ThunderBucker EX5. This one is going to be seafoam with matching headstock and Hipshot clovers. Weight is 8.8 lbs. B string has that Thunderbird sound, very healthy and piano like. 21 fret neck.
Rear control cavity cover is same as my '67 EBO, Scott sent me a tracing of one of his NRs for confirmation

Six bolts for extra grip
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/NR%202012/P1050123.jpg)
I'm still waiting on the new 4 string bodies with angled neck pocket to work with the new bridge.
-
Very nice! I like the six bolts!
-
Thanks, Scott. The strap button will go on the top bolt closest to the nut. Should balance pretty well with the 3+2 headstock (1t's 2.5 inches shorter than an original NR4) and fits in a standard gig bag (Warwick RockBag).

I've been testing the ThunderBucker EX5 for the last 6 weeks or so, it definitely fills the bill.
String spacing is 2 11/16" (17mm string to string) at bridge, neck is 34" scale, 1 3/4" wide at the nut.
-
the old warmoth 5 string spacing before the gecko and new line. always thought it was too close but as i get older `17-17.5 seems about right....

It's the same as my G&L 2500 and Ibanez GWB-1. I like it better than my Yamaha BB-605 which is 19mm. The Thunderbird club thread on TB has some recent posts on the EXVs installed in an Epi Pro V.

JFC stop already your giving me gas! Things are tight right now (but good) The missus still works at Kodak but for how much longer who knows. Once things settle down I am in for a Cataldo NR. :)

I've been hearing about Kodak all week. Sure hope everything works out, Scott.
-
Thanks Carlo, time will tell. She is a para legal and handles filling of patents, pretty specialized stuff. She has been very busy lately and there are only three people left who know the intricacies of the job and Cath is THE go to person. Who knows what awaits. Kodak lured her from the private sector almost 20 years ago, she will always be in demand somewhere. Her yoga studio is doing very thankfully and I have plenty of work.

From what I've heard, patents are about the only value left in Kodak. Sounds like she couldn't be in a better position. Great that her yoga business is doing well also.

[devil-on-your-shoulder] I hate to be the one to add fuel to your GAS, Scott, and I know that this is not a V or an Ex, but would this comply with being "something special comes along..." ?
It is an NR - your preferred body style; almost a "sig" with you...
Your preferred "vintage" pickup/s in two flavours...
You can always tell your SWMBO it was my fault, that it all made perfect sense... ;) [/devil-on-your-shoulder]
Beautiful work Carlo, as usual... 8)
... and Scott, hopefully Kodak weathers the storm... good luck...
-
Thanks Kenny as always your a a big help. ;) As for Kodak it's going under, the only thing to do is pick your time to jump or someone will do it for you.

Finally recovered enough to get some work done. Here's the Fiver body grain filled with drywall compound, sealed, sanded and primed. It will be seafoam with matching headstock.

Craig Pepe in SoCal ordered it to go with his JAEbird. I talked him into cherry. Who knows, he may not like it.;) It's getting a ThunderBucker MAX.
The Fiver goes to Tom Jenkins in Pasadena.

I talked to Steve about a TB max I am hoping he can crank one out for me before he goes on vacation.

Can't see why he would not like it.

Those unpainted ones look spectacular!

NR4 body lacquer is done, buffing next week. Headstock gets a decal and clearcoats, fretboard gets oiled. Bridge and tailpiece parts need to be polished.

Thanks, guys. Steve's in town for a while so I think we'll get some clips. I buffed and assembled it this AM and plugged in. I hadn't touched my amp settings and it is noticeably louder than my test NR with a '66 EX5 in it. I'll do some better pictures this week.

Done and Donner fly away tomorrow. They have been fun builds, the Fiver is tuned to Bb and has DR Sunbeams per customer request. The NR4 has a ThunderBucker Max and Smith Rock Masters.

I'm not a Tbird guy, but I think those are fantastic!

Damn, that seafoam green five is a knockout!

i'm liking that red offering to the gods
-
Lookin' sharp!!!! nice bridge!!
-
Thanks, guys! Both customers are very happy with their basses. I hope to get some sound clips and pix from them.
The one on the right is my ultra light, has a 2 bolt neck, no pick guard and floating bridge. Weighs 7.4 lbs, balances and sounds great. I plan on keeping it just the way it is.

OMG I'm peeing my pants! VERY excited about this bass 8)
-
[envy]Carlo, you are a cruelly talented man...[/envy] ;)
-
Scott the fiver showed up safe and sound. thanks.
First impression only as i got it late last night and could n't really let loose.
Carlo - the bass is the most comfortable thunderbird (reverse or NR) that i have ever played. No neck dive and plays much shorter than a "real" NR for us nerdy "hold the bass high up finger playing types"... Seems low slingers and pick players don't hate Birds as much as i seem to do. My third Cataldo bass clearly has the best paint job by far. Excellent color and shine. Nice and light weight, reminds me of my alder weight fenders from the late 60's - 72 era. i wasn't sure about the 17.5MM spacing but i really like it a lot now that i have it in my hands. reminds me of my first 5 string MM bass which i regret having ever sold. Not sure i will ever look at a full scale (19MM) five string the same.
Sound - Played it rather low thru my B15S but a very grindy 66 tbird sound . Not sure i like the one pickup setup. again this finger players thing as the bridge pickup always seems to add some clarity more than treble to my sound especially depending on where my hand is placed. much less of an issue with a pick but i very seldom use one and doubt i ever will with the tight spacing on the fiver. Carlo i may have to send her down to you for a mod......
-
Glad you like it, Jim! I have around 45 basses worth of paint experience now, the finish work has definitely improved and my current prices reflect that. The compact headstock definitely helps with balance.
Since a '66 neck pickup and '63 bridge pup are the same (both for vintage Gibsons and ThunderBuckers), it would be easy to move your neck pickup to the bridge position and have Steve wind a '63 EX5 neck. That should give you the sound you're looking for. I'd be happy to do it.
-
Off to Scott today

Color turned out great! Ebony board or does the background make it look darker than it is?
-
Just a shot of the headstock? How's about a full body shot?
-
Sorry, had to get it packed and shipped! Ebony fretboard, Gotoh vintage reverse tuners, ThunderBucker MAX pickup, God of Thunder pickguard and tailpiece...the G.O.T. signature model.

I'm really happy with the way this one came out, especially the way it SOUNDS! I learned a few things with the painted neck and TR plate. Hope you dig it, Scott. Last bass for 2012. Tomorrow I get started on Project ExplorerBird 2013.

Explorerbird mmmmmmmmm yummy
oh, bird's cool too :D

Looks great!

Thanks, guys! Looking forward to what Scott thinks after he gives it a workout.
-
Carlo I have now doubt I am going to love it! She goes right into rotation behind my trusty '67. Typically I have two NRs onstage and spend equal time with each. Often it is the '67 with the white Dimarzio Model G powered NR Fenderbird I built. The new G.O.T. NR will replace my NR Fenderbird bass onstage. Just looking at the pictures makes me drool that is one fine looking bass! We have a Gig December 8th I am going to do my best to get video/audio of it, at the very least pictures! I probably shouldn't say this but I am way more excited about this bass than Gibsons new NR.
-
Beautiful work, as always... 8)
-
Beautiful bass guys. It looks stunning!!
-
Wow. Really great bass.
-
She arrived about two hours ago, had to wait a bit till it came up to temperature to open it up. I'll give a snapshot review as I am pressed for time. If you sit down with this bass and close your eyes you would think you have a 60's NR in your hands, it just feels right. Not only that is sounds like a good NR should, full of grit growl and sustain, The pickup is a Thunderbucker Max. Fit and finish are beautiful. I really like the six bolt neck, hard to tell it from a set neck. Carlos bridge is a pretty nifty piece of work on it's own. I can't wait to take this bass to rehearsal and a gig.

Money has been somewhat of an issue lately since being out of work since 12/15 but some financial things have seemed to actually workout better than expected for a change so time to get this baby completed. Carlo can you have Steve build the needed pickup and i will ship the bass down to you. It is such a great bass. Just plays so well.
Jim

I'd been wondering how you were getting on after the layoff, good to hear things are better than expected. Hope it works out for the best in the long run. I'll put in an order with Steve, should take around a month before I get it depending how busy he is.
Probably make it a little easier if you email me at jaebird@cataldobasses.com.
Nice to know you've enjoyed playing it!
