From a thread at TDPRI, quoting from a thread at the Gibson company forum:

"I'm pretty sure that Henry had mentioned earlier that the technology would allow for the pickups to be "programmed" via computer hookup to sound like any other pickup out there...single coil...p-90...humbucker etc...including any type of pickup that can be dreamed up by the player...

...this would eliminate the need for carting around various guitars with various pickups with "signature" sounds and characteristics...you would only need to have a single guitar that provides any sound you desire... "

No idea if this is true or not.

Has Henry never heard of modeling amps and pedals?

"... you would only need to have a single guitar that provides any sound you desire ..."

A most horrible perspective indeed. I also marvel why a guitar company would bring something like that to the market and cut into its own future sales.

As Jon Lord once said: "Of course modern keyboards can emulate a Hammond sound so that even I would not notice it, but that is not the point. They don't feel like a Hammond when being played!."

Who wants a Les Paul that sounds like an SG?

It'd be really nice if Gibson actually did something, anything cool. I'm as devout as anyone could be, but Henry J (and all his crapatude) really need to go.

And just in time for Halloween, Charles Nelson Reilly's ghost will be there for the introduction.

It's official then.  Gibson's new toy is racing with Ernie Ball's "Gamechanger" onboard digital unit to hit the market first.  The lawsuits out of this will be quite interesting.

Maybe, maybe not. Assuming the info about Gibson's new product is correct, it would still depend on the details. They might not use the same technology and it might not involve new patents.

But now here's another quote, from a thread at The Gear Page:

Here it is folks (thank you anonymous internet):

Gibson is producing a new line of Les Paul. This model will be a cheeper version of the studio and will be produced in China, yet it will still carry the Gibson logo. The guitar comes with a usb port, and a genuine Gibson usb wire. Plug the guitar into your computer and you are greeted with a program that contains a dumbed down version of Amplitube, and basic recording/editing fuctions, and a program to help you learn songs, along with a store.

The big 'revolution' is Gibson will have an 'Itunes' like store. Songs will be downloaded as *.gpf files, which is a compsoite of .mp3 and Gibson's new tabulature format. The format makes learning the songs super easy. You can slow down the song, and there will even be videos for some of the most popular songs, which would require an additional purchase. This isn't like learning songs from youtube, or other tab sites. These songs will be accurate as Gibson is working with the Artists when possible, and life long musicians otherwise.

*edit: The price mark for the guitar is going to be $300 - $500. The $500 version will have better electronics.

Again, I have no idea if any of it is accurate. I hope not.

And to think I used to have to lift the needle off the record every few measures to learn a song. :-[

This makes more sense to me if its true.  Its probably an attempt to wean the kiddos off of Guitar Hero for the Christmas season of 2010.  Get 'em in a cheap six stringer, and let the software teach them from there... Anyone can play guitar!

A "genuine Gibson USB wire?"

Perhaps made by Monster Cable to Gibson's exacting specs?  And similar to the ones you can buy on Ebay for $.99?
