He missed the 4 knobs.

The guy has embarrassingly little knowledge outside of his Norlin-era Gibson comfort zone.

Look at what he has to say about a 1960 Ric 375F ("Huh! apparently it's valuable!" and the unbelievable "and as far as the rest of it goes - regular Rickenbacker stuff") (07:13)

https://youtu.be/TXsVUsI2yVk?t=433

And a '96 360 TUR - apparently he hasn't seen a single Ric in the 35 years between 1973 to 2008 (09:35)

Well, if "it makes the strings feel slinkier" it must be a good thing. The dreaded non-slinky feel of the strings has really held me back from playing TBirds all these years.

Apart from being unnecessary, the holy immaculate three-point/stop-tail combo is butt-ugly.

Someone over at Talkbass bought the NR Tbird with the Tune-o Matic tailstop.
Looks like a very amateuristic job on that tailstop...

It's as crucial a modification as a pair of pontoons on an F-16 jet fighter. Form follows function - not.

I find silly fake stuff like this laughable, sorry.

But of course the strings will feel slinkier that way.

They haven’t used that stop tail since the ES Les Paul Bass. Maybe they should sell them with a Slinky…….

Yeah it's silly. And yeah it's a mismatch.
But what really bothers me is the sloppy craftsmanship.
It is not parallel to the bridge and not aligned properly.

It sounds better with the full signal on the Jr , I try it for a minute or two about every three or four months or so , and then go right back to the full pickup .
Gotta say that Jr is one of my favourite things to play .
(but I’m kinda a Danelectro guy so you have to take that into consideration)

They weigh about five pounds , and with older strings you get a nice old school thump that slides right under the mix without taking up too much room . And they’re fun to play . But they were originally designed to be cheap into instruments , and they are what they are .
I was an older Pbass guy that had taken a liking for Rics . At first I didn’t like the short scale Longhorn , now I prefer to play short scales . Mostly gig with the Danos , and tend to play Gibsons at home . After falling hard for the Jr I picked up an SG , but find I still much prefer the Jr .
Still have the usual collection of classics people tend to acquire . I’ve been playing bars since the mid 70’s and still gig every week . But just a blue collar musician playing local mid sized bars .
I’m ok with that . Retired . And can put in personal time .
Bit of an amp nerd , but not crazy about lugging around big tube stacks . I drive and haul what I need to use . So I like modern cab design , and have found some Class D heads I love .

I had a 1960 shorthorn that lacked bottom end. With flats it sounded almost like a baritone.
Title: Re: More mod collection basses. Tbirds too
Post by: morrow on June 30, 2022, 07:15:31 AM
My Longhorn is a first gen Korean reissue from the Shinko Factory , it’s deep with ancient strings . Recently picked up a shortscale DC and it is much thinner , but I find it’s fattening up as the strings are getting older . So my hopes are high . I have a Dolphin nose , might be Chinese , I’m not sure , it has the LaBella Dano flats on it , and they are quite light , it’s thinner than the Longhorn . So the three I have all sound different .
When I first got the Longhorn it was twangy , and especially with a pick and soloed bridge pickup sounded like a baritone . Now the strings are about twenty four years old and all it does is thump . But it’s a nice deep woody old school one . I get that Joey Spampinato thing , I often use my thumb to get an upright sound .
I’d love to find a Jerry Jones Longhorn , but they’re pretty rare up here . A surprising number of roots and blues players around here have picked up Longhorns .
I’m partially to blame .

There are still some Greco birds floating around this forum, right? I still have mine, though I don't play it very much anymore.
For whatever bizarre reason, it has the 3-point bridge with the 2-point tailpiece, not entirely unlike the NR at the start of this thread.

Does it make sense? No. Does it work fine? Sure.  Why did they do it? I have no idea.

At the end of the day, my favorite bridge out of the few Gibson (and clone) basses I've owned is still the one on my LPB-1, which I believe is a Schaller roller bridge. It's much easier to adjust than the 3-point, and works fine. I like easy-to-use functional bridges, and I think the purported differences in tone are exaggerated.

The tailstop on a bass with a three point bridge does serve a purpose. It helps to keep the double windings off the bridge saddles.

That does make sense, but do you think that's why Greco did it? I wonder why they wouldn't just do a two-piece like the '60s ones and Epiphone VP.

A perfect, if aesthetically questionable solution to a problem that didn't exist in the first place which equates to "ugly without even a purpose". I've never ever had that winding issue with the three-point on a TBird and I use any brand of bass string I can get my hands on. Not on a properly intonated bass where it is unfathomable that all saddles would be snug towards the rear of the bridge.

Or do you all use only Rotosound Tru Bass sets on your Birds?

Back to the Mod Shop: I haven't paid that much attention to it, but aren't these basses really seconds that Gibson has rescued by putting something different on them? Some of the mods make no sense unless they're covering up a mistake.

For sure, but they have some very cool stuff from time to time, especially the guitars. And it's a chance to own a one-off or a color you really like, and not buy the zillionth burst LP off the rack.

And that mustard TBird in Ilan's pic gives ample evidence how ugly a chrome bridge can look in the wrong setting.

That said, I kinda like the idea that they are throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks. And it gives us something to discuss to lighten up our usual topics.

Imagine how captivating Victoria DeAngelis could be if she played a Gibson. Well only as captivating as A cups can be I suppose. Now if Carol Kaye or Suzi Quatro went on stage today with nothing but electrical tape on their nips, that would really be something.  :o

Has Steve Wishnevsky gone to art school now?

You laugh now, but it will end up in a Scandinavian Design museum and naked people will dance around it on a full moon night before setting it - mercifully - on fire.

What evil these Dutchmen do - vreselijk …

Why can't they paint an SG bass like this? Not everyone wants boring black. Let's see some bling, radiator pickup covers, racing stripes.

How easy are spare modules to find in the wild? Seems like quite a risk running old proprietary effects modules with zero OEM support. A fascinating idea in principle, almost ahead of its time, but hopefully the bass works 'neutered' without anything plugged into those ports if the modules are kaput?

That's weird. The pickguard shape looks like the route for the Tribute series Junior/Special. Even with no controls, you still would need access to the pickup to jack wiring. Maybe the top is solid under that pickguard with access at the rear rout. Vastly overpriced too.
Title: Re: More mod collection basses. Tbirds too

I don't think you need access. They could rout for the pickup and drill from the jack directly to the rout.

One of the guys in the shop was always trying to get little portraits in. We had a contract doing weekly flyers for a big grocery outfit. Sometimes we had to shoot kitchenware , which tended to be reflective. Everything was shot with large format view cameras so it was an easy fix. We generally had three sets on the go in the shop.

Before photoshop changed everything.

Much as I rate the EB-650 as the best hollow-body bass ever made (by any company), I was never madly in love with those Trini Lopez 'mirrored triangle'-look holes. But it doesn't do the sound any harm and is at least different.

Ok with it , I recognize the Gibson style teardrop burst , but I think the traditional LP style burst works much better for that body shape.
I certainly wouldn’t describe it as horrible. And I kinda like the spray over gold! So I’m neither offended nor gobsmacked by it.

They used the 4 existing holes (VVT+jack) and drilled a 4th hole.

I assumed a lot of these started out as factory screw-ups.

It's natural finish, I don't see what screw up they could have hidden. Usually screw-ups get a full refinish and sometimes a custom guard to hide routs that would show witness lines in the future had the guitar been refinished.

Yeah I know. But why so awfully close to the original middle knob?
A normal diamond shaped pattern would have made much more sense.

They would have to plug an existing hole for that. Apparently too much trouble for them. And with a natural finish it'd be impossible to hide.

Ah yes, I had the original postion of the middle knob wrong. I thought it was the one closest to the edge. But it is the pther one.
Probably got confused because they swapped the output and the third knob.

Amen. And it's easy to bash him, which is done all over this thread already. I posted the vid because I wanted to show the bass.

I have nothing against Herr Trolly or whatever his name is, he just - our European readers will readily understand - reminds me of Troubadix, the Gallic bard of the Asterix & Obelix comic series, who always felt compelled to share his talent with an unsuspecting world ...

NR in "Satin Ebony Fox" (kind of like the Silver Fox finish Epi used on Coronets), ambered pearl guard, old script logo, amber knobs, TBird bridge and tailpiece. $2,299 seems like a good deal, right?

Best looking NR I've seen.

Alternative history in the making: No actual 60ies TBird ever had that logo. Total mismatch to the modern tuners.

Those amber knobs must appeal to anybody though.

That's why they call it the mod collection.

But I do get your discomfort. I feel the same about Fender J's with spaghetti logos. There's just one NR to irritate you and zillions of wrong J's to freak me out.

There is mods and then there is silly mods. Logo style does not influence sound.
The whole thing has so many mismatches, it's pawnshop more like."Hey Joe, what else do we have lying around in the workshop right now? We've really got to get rid of this stuff!"

What can I do? Be ready to sacrifice my life anytime to protect your poor taste, Ilan, of course! BTDF - bad taste defense force, that's me!!!  8)

It's too hodgepode for me, the archaic logo, a 90ies (and even later) satin style fin on a 60ies bass, mixing chrome and nickel look hardware, the amber knobs, the antiquated stringholder bridge, the mother of toilet seat pg - it's like some lavish antipasti plate at an Italian restaurant,

Close, but no cigar.

I am puzzled by the spacing of the bridge and the tailpiece. Can't think of any valid reason why they are so far apart?
And the mismatch of chrome of the pickups and nickel of the bridge is rather unfortunate too.

the mismatch is because the Epiphone parts are Nickel with some chrome, I'm just happy to see them actually giving this a shot - Epiphone hardware on a Gibson body.

There is nothing wrong with the Epiphone two point bridge plus tailstop.
But they should have realised these are also available in chrome

I don't think so.  Several people have said they didn't like it.  Also, needless to say, if more people liked it, Gibson wouldn't be discontinuing it.  I like it, but I tend to be an outlier in many things, including this, obviously.

The DC Jr. cost less than half of that 'bird.  ;)  I think the Jr. is a bass with some very good bang for the buck.

We'll probably be seeing some of these mod collection basses at ridiculous flipper prices sitting on eBay, etc. for eternity at some point down the road.

But I thought you all liked the DC Jr.

But I'm with you, Ilan, don't despair! I like its sound, yet neither the LP Junior doublecut shape nor short scale basses in principle do much for me, I like long necks as a visual statement, I guess if you dig deep enough I'm a "size matters" guy.  But it's a coherent design and sound is more important than looks.

I also don't mind the open pore matte look (it can look good), but it's no doubt a more recent fashion fin (also pushed for economic reasons) and combining that with the original TBird egg slicer bridge and amber knobs doesn't do it for me at all. With a fin like that, that bass should have had the most modern hardware available.

An old friend had an original double cut Jr guitar. At some point the horns had been cut off so it would look like a Vox teardrop. Later some very accurate mahogany horns were glued back on , and the guitar was once again refinished. Oddly enough the refin looked very similar to the finish on the Jr reissues. That poor thing had been to hell and back , but it had an incredible feel , and the P90 in it just killed. It was just an incredible little thing!
So when the Jr was released it brought back memories of that little beat up guitar…

I don't remember seeing this one, but it's for sale on TB. I don't know what's "mod" about it. The matte black finish??? The seller put the Hipshot on there.

I'd like them to flicker in various patterns while the bass is being played - is that an option?

I have a hunch they stem from some secret underground IDF facility in the Negev desert.

PS: Dave is right, I've called a halt to compulsive Gibson bass collecting and haven't bought anything more recently other than the LP Junior Tribute (which I haven't regretted, one of the best short scales on the market). It was getting out of hand and burdening my heirs! And George is right as well, in my heyday, I would have gobbled that Spidey TBird up in a sec.

I still get tempted though. While you guys tend to rave about things that pretend to be vintage and emulate historic hardware, I like progress and attempting things differently. So the T.-Rex Brown Bird has some allure for me even though I don't own a single Pantera CD (and if I'm honest I don't even like Rex' trebly overdriven sound, but I'd like to hear what else that bass can do). An active TBird from Gibson has never existed before.

Here's something... Still very bright and almost all with a pick, but at least he solos the individual pickups about 10 minutes in... with a very weird attempt at fingerstyle played right on the bridge after that :o ... and then finally turns the tone down around 12 minutes.

That doesn't sound half-bad and the passive mode is not ridiculously different in sound and output to the active one.
