Gibson Basses / Incoming Vintage Pro Epi 'bird
« on: March 26, 2024, 08:18:08 AM »
Well I finally cracked. I'm not even a huge fan of playing Thunderbirds, but here we are.  ;D I bought a used Vintage Pro in white with an Epi case. With tax and shipping, it was less than the new 64 version. I'm supposed to be downsizing, and not buying anymore basses just because they're "cool", but you know how that goes... 4 more years and I'm going to be selling off a lot of stuff. That's the plan anyway.

That is a fun configurator. A couple of years ago I had a 32'' scale, 5 string (high C) Frog spec-ed out, but I (gladly*) never went for it. Partly because I couldn't get myself to spent that kind of money on something I've never played or even seen in person. There's a very good local bass player that I know who is some sort of Maruszczyk distributor, but I never got far enough along to see what he could do on price.

*I bought a cheap Warwick 32'' 5er to experiment with this idea, and it never gained any traction for me.

Back in the early 60s, the long shoremen, field hands, lumberjacks and iron workers who doubled as bassplayers needed extra space for their huge meat hooks to navigate around the controls. As the cultural revolution took hold, Gibson realized the stoner hippies playing psychedelic music didn't need as much room for their dainty girly hands. Just a guess.

;D ;D ;D I almost replied with something about bass players' man-sized hands, but your response is far better.  8)

we had a pretty good turnout, it's hard to tell but the room was quite big.

I know that feeling! There used to be a place here in the Chicago 'burbs called Cubby Bear North that was like a freakin barn. You could put 200 people in there and it looked like a ghost town!

Oh wow, good eyes Proggie Boy (and I thought you were only good at counting uneven meters!), one lives and learns.

I didn't even know that anybody ever bothered to copy the 4005 look.

The pointy horns were a quick giveaway. The original 4005 has bulbous horns. And as the other guys have said - the 4005XC is like a copy of a copy!

 My Orville Thunderbird and I.

Looks like a good gig Mark! My new wave cover band did that tune at probably every show back in the early 2000s. We had a synth bass track running below the surface. Always got people moving.

Herr Entwistle playing what is substantially (still) a Rev TBird,

but with changes to the body that would even make Scott's eyes bleed:

Look here under "Axe Bass" for details:

Don't try this at home, please.

There was a Jazz Bass based axe bass before this one too. https://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/bass/bass6768.html

That's not a Ric, it's a Shaftesbury.

One of my favorite lyric lines is in "Tequilla Sunrise" - "workin' on a dream he planned to try" - four "conditionals" stacked into one line.

I love this. I never would have put that together.

A lot, if not most, of their songs are good stories.

Randy with a Ric and my favorite Eagles number, yeah, I’m a pansy …

You don't have to be a pansy to love this song.  ;)

Weird. Looks like more trouble to build that way.

I wish sellers would stop treating the white ones like collectors items.

Yup! White is almost always a premium. Looks so good though!

My Les Paul fingerboard sits flat on the body.
