Title: 1990 Fender JP90
Post by: godofthunder on July 14, 2015, 02:36:16 PM
Found at a local shop USA goodness for the princely sum of $399. Hardly a mark on her. I think of it as a streamlined Precision, The neck reminds me of a Geddy Jazz bass. A bit unusual I think someday they will be sought after.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/JP90%20002_zpsxggqwmkz.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/JP90%20001_zpsraakdacx.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/JP90%20003_zpsbykgpqpv.jpg)

I've seen a few over the years and every one was red w/black guard. They were all inexpensive. Nothing wrong with them, either, as far as I could tell. The odd styling of the guard must have hurt sales.

I have one and like everything about it except the pickguard.  Which is why I traded my old red one for a black one as soon as I possibly could.  The black on black hides the hideous shape of the pg.

Body shape looks like trying to get in on the Guild Pilot era of skinnier pointier fender-flavored instruments?  Not bad looking as those go.

What are the electronics?   Just passive with a pickup selector?  How's it sound?

It's a passive bass.

Every one I've played has always highlighted the things about P/J pickup combinations that I don't like. Their tone is a bit thin and phasey, what in the 80's would have been called "modern."

I only use the "P" pickup, it sounds pretty fat to me.  I've never had much use for "bridge" pickups on a bass guitar.  I wouldn't mind at all if that Jazz pickup wasn't even there.  That being said, I don't think the pickup Fender put in these is a traditional type of Precision pickup.  It seems like a higher output, ceramic-magnet deal.

Good looking bass! I've seen those, and yes, they remind me of a Pilot as well.
