I hope I can tread these waters in a responsible manner. First off, having not seen the movie the only opinions I have stated here were come to by being familiar with the progress of the production from knowing one of the crew and reading reviews and comments from those I find whose views usually comport with mine. Not that everyone's has to, but in this instance it means I trust the view they ascribed to the film. That being said, the political skew of Avatar was described by James Cameron himself in interviews about the movie (including one I saw online from the Today Show (a program I usually avoid).
None of these things makes Avatar any different than most every other movie released by the Hollywood machine. It's up to every individual to decide whether they choose to see the film (and support those views with their dollars) or not. Most will see it without even thinking of it in these terms (and that's fine), but for those who choose not to (or who see it but hate it), labeling them in pejorative terms like the L.A. Times chooses to do is not a reasonable way to discuss the fact that some people don't have the same world view as they do.
