The Bass Zone / Re: Gregg Philbin - REO - which bass?
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:34:54 PM »
My first concert at age 15 was shortly after that album came out. The old City Auditorium in St. Joe, Mo., which was so old I wasn't sure it would survive the show. Philbin played a Jazz as I recall, certainly not the Thunderbird.

A great show, it was basically exactly the same as the album. They were not famous yet and really rocked. I saw them again a couple of years later after "You Can Tune a Fish" came out, and while they hadn't gone completely soft yet success seemed to have taken the fire out of their performance. Bruce Hall was the bassist then, and he is a fine bass player, but they just didn't have the energy they had the first time. I saw them two nights in a row that year. Rainbow, with Ronnie James Dio, opened for them both nights. Blackmore smashed a guitar the first night. The second night they cut Rainbow short because they were filming REO for the Midnight Special (or maybe it was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, my memory is hazy....). This was at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. I never saw that Midnight Special, so I don't know if it ever aired. I would love to see it.

Edit: this was it.

Gibson Basses / Re: Silverburst JCS

I really liked how the silverbursts "greened". But I remember a bandmate who sold his beloved LP after it happened heartbroken, totally devastated. He could never get himself to play iit again. Ironically, the buyer wanted it because it had "greened" and he even got a good price for it.

Well, one man's garbage is another man's treasure.

Well brother, you're the first.....

I think she looks like a budget knock-off, the PUPs look like they've been placed at random rather than on the sweet spots and on the whole, when playing, she just doesn't feel right or give me the tiniest spark of a feeling I'm playing something special.
But you have to consider the source here: I'm the guy who shot the concept of the SG Bass into pieces and fire-bombed the remains back in '05 and who is currently owning one SG Standard Heritage Cherry Bass, a SG Supreme Fireburst Bass and a SG Supreme Natural Bass.....  ;D

As I have gotten older, with Rheumatoid Arthritis in my shoulders, hands and back, the long scale TBs have become painful to play. The long reach for the first fret kills me after about an hour. The short scale TB takes away that problem. Also the short scale causes very little pain in my fingers. The flat black feels great in my hands, and the pickup locations work good, it sits in my band's mix perfectly and sounds great. I may be the only one that likes it, but I really like it.

When Gibson cane out with silverburst Les Pauls (guitars) in the '70s I loved the looks of them (not crazy about the green color they turned into over time though). But I haven't seen any other shapes that look good with it to me. Thunderbirds, nope. Explorers, nope. The JCS looks pretty good though.

My new short scale TB case doesn't have it. That's fine with me.

Not those who prefer shorties ........ but if it's another half-ass job like the shorty TB they shouldn't bother .....

I love my shorty TB. I think better than my two '76 birds. Nothing half-ass about it that I can find.

Gibson used some odd pots back in the day. I broke the shaft on one of the volume pots on my '76 Thunderbird and have been looking for a replacement for 3 or 4 years now. It is also 100K, but not stacked like that one. The only advice I can give is to keep checking eBay, sometimes stuff like that comes up.

Nothing has changed in 40 years.

Except the guy actually playing bass has one more string than the guy that actually played it 40 years ago.

I believe that's done to show you can use the bridge with both systems

I've actually done that before though, on purpose. I had a five string bass (never mind the brand....) where the B string in a set of strings was too big and wouldn't fit through the top load hole, but would fit strung through the body. So I had the B through the body and all the rest through the bridge.

I have a '77 Tbird that is stamped "BGN" on the neck heel. I originally thought some idiot stamped his initials on it, but later learned that the factory used that to designate factory seconds (or maybe ones that weren't even good enough to be seconds). Apparently "BGN" means "bargain". At this point in time, with all the dings, etc., it is impossible to tell what the original problem was.

I got to tour Japan and Korea in '98, '99 and '00 - but they were short 2 week tours. Still counts though. :)

Oh, to answer your other question, I tour Hawaii all the time....:)
