Just sealed the deal on this beauty two hours ago.I traded my 74 jazz bass for it.March 72.pre skunk stripe,old style pehead with walnut wings,long guard.Pro refret and non original guard.All else is there. reeeeaalll interesting. Early Rick 4000 basses had set necks. Some were routed for the neck pickup at the factory and shipped out as 4001S basses.
This one has the full width inlays though. I've never seen a set neck 4001 with deluxe features.

Its not a set neck.Its a regular 4001.It has a black pinstrip at the heal.Optical illusion.The guard on the 72 is a cheesy one thats for sure Ilan.But i have already rectified that situation :mrgreen:

Did you go with a wide (fretboard-to-surround) 60's guard to cover the holes, or a period-correct guard shape?

WELL.............I want to thank Ilan for making me think about the guard thing.I made a phone call and had my friend pull the guard for me and take some pics and guess what??THERES A F&%KING P BASS ROUTE BETWEEN THE PICKUPS!!Im so pissed off!Well needless to say the deal is off unless he sends me serious cash on top of my trade....What a drag......

Why the hell do so many people want to turn everything into P-basses?
I got my Sunn 2x15 cabinet from Atomic last year and it was honestly described. He even held it for 2 months until I could drive up there to get it. Hopefully they will help you out on this.
They have a pretty cool shop with loads of cool amps and other junk.

They sold this one to a friend of mine over the weekend who intern traded it to me.He never bothered to look under the guard till he did it for me today.Im still getting the bass along with a nice chunk of cash for my jazz bass.Its all good.Its all about being a player not some unused framable peice of artwork.,Im goin to put a new guard on it and then promptly....PLAY THE LIVING PISS OUT OF IT!!!! :mrgreen:

So a 60's style wide guard will be needed. Sometimes white Ric guards tend to be a little transparent and you can see the routes right through them. If that happens, spray the bottom of the guard with some white paint.
I think you still made a good deal.
It's nice to be able to gig a nice bass like this and not worry about scratching a museum piece.

I'm guessing it had to do with the cap, and many frustrated owners not understanding why the treble pickup lacks bass frequencies.

Yep. Thats a great analogy Ilan.Why they even put that choke cap in there is beyond me.Once you pull that cap the 4001 just comes alive!

I remember seeing MSG and Chris Glen had an Explorer Bass through many SVT's and it sounded awesome, then looking the other day at the original footage of that tour, I see he had a Precision pup in between the originals!!!

Because there is some kind of electrical interference when you use both pickups which makes a mid-scooped sound. The cap does something with which it does not have this mid scooped sound, but a full rich sound instead, when using both pickups. I very much like the cap. But I seldom use the bridge pickup solo (capped or uncapped).

Could be, but the fact remains that practically no one has added the cap after RIC pulled it out in 1985. I don't think the guys at Santa Ana got many complaints about any electrical interference when the cap was gone.

I know of several people who have added the vintage tone thing which now is standard on al 4003's. (Which is the cap with posibility to switch it off)

Well, I wrote "practically no one", not "absolutely no one"... Anyway I'm sure some purists have added the cap, but 99.99% of post-'85 Ric owners were happy with their basses and never complained about unwanted mid scoop nor felt a need to correct it.
The cap, in my opinion, was a historic mistake that took way too long to make right. It resulted in so many altered, sometimes butchered, 4001 basses. It also gained Rics a reputation for being trebely, clanky one-trick-ponies - anyway that was the widely held misconception. Which they really aren't, once you bypass the cap.

Same with the old truss rods. I know of a few famous players who stopped using a Ric early on because "it broke". :rolleyes:

I think if you are fortunate to be able to gig with two rigs then the cap left in will give the best sound IMO, where would we be without the sounds from the likes of Geddy and Squire. I removed my cap for a few years and I found the sound just became a little too normal without that snarling bridge pup sound, so it's back in now, although saying that, with my new 72, which is pre skunk stripe, this one sure is clanky. But once I get to a gig with it, I will not be reverting to taking the cap out because I can't get a good sound, because I know I will.

the new push pull setup.muddles up the tone as whole on the new basses in my opinion.To much B.S. for the signal to pass thru.There are good and bad things about old rods.Well... i shouldnt say bad things...more like,Misunderstood i think.Ironically,it seems that the newer style anchored rods have more twisting problem.The old rods merely held the neck in place.So you snugged up the nuts and Viola!only thing is they wouldny pull the neck back if they had to much forword bow.Thats the only real drawback in my opinion.Other than that they really work very well if you knew how to set them up. :mrgreen: NEWS FLASH.I went a different direction so the siver sparkle 72 rick is once again available!! 1,750.00 at ATOMIC MUSIC

Somebody is selling all their Ric basses to Atomic. They have a pre skunk '72 4001 and a refin '63 1999 on Ebay at the moment.
