Not a surprise, probably a good move by the new management.

Probably a realistic and necessary move.  Does anyone know what their Memphis operation built?

The semi hollow series if I'm not mistaken.

Right, the various ES models. There never was a good reason to build a separate factory in Memphis, Henry and his ego wanted a presence there.

It was a nice enough factory to give public tours. It also had a little Gibson Store in it that you could buy some guitars & apparel.

They are already making changes. On the "Gibson Forum", they just changed the "Gibson Memphis" thread to "Gibson ES".

I looked everywhere for the bass sub forum. Could'nt find it. Just the Epiphone one. Must be a temporary domain glitch.

About a year ago, they dumped all of the sub forums into Gibson USA as one. Not much bass discussion since. I don't know why they didn't change the Epiphone forum at the same time.

I looked at thire Epi subforums, the guitar forum is much more active than the bass forum.

One of these years they'll have a separate subforum for Henry-era Gibsons. The owners of Fireturd Xs and Zoot Suit SGs will need a refuge.

A guitar player I played with a few years ago used to do QC for Gibson Memphis. Said it was a VERY easy, boring job and he couldn't believe how lucky he was to get paid to do it, until they gave him some Nashville Gibsons to go over for some reason. Then he said he EARNED his money.

The latest: FedEx Logistics moving headquarters to former Gibson Guitar building in Downtown Memphis

I saw a comment elsewhere that it was ironic considering how many guitars FedEx has destroyed.

Well, you can carry that thought even further and state that FedEx instrument deliveries from online retailers killed mom & pop guitar stores, thereby hurting people's opportunities to play a Gibson in a shop etc ...

Alas!, it's the spirit of the age ...

What a brilliant lyricist Bob Calvert was:

I would've liked you to have been deep-frozen too
And waiting still as fresh in your flesh for my return to Earth
But your father refused to sign the forms to freeze you
Let's see you'd be about 60 now
And long dead by the time I return to Earth
My time-held dreams were full of you
As you were when I left, still underage
My android replica is playing up again, it's no joke
When she comes she moans another's name

[Chorus]
That's the spirit of the age
That's the spirit of the age
That's the spirit of the age
That's the spirit of the age
Ah, the spirit of the age
That's the spirit of the age
Ah, the spirit of the age
That is the spirit of the age

I am a clone, I am not alone
Every fiber of my flesh and bone is identical to the others
Everything I say is in the same tone
As my test tube brother's voice, there is no choice between us
If you had ever seen us you'd rejoice in your uniqueness
And consider every weakness something special of your own
Being a clone I have no flaws to identify
Even this doggerel that pours from my pen
Has just been written by another twenty-thousand telepathic men
Oh, word for word, it says:
"Oh, for the wings of any bird, other than a battery hen"

We've taken too much for granted ... and all the time it had grown ...
From techno seeds we first planted ... evolved a mind of its own ...

Shipping guitars was happening before the web existed. Guitar Center and Musicians Friend (before one bought the other) had mail order catalogs. Vintage Guitar magazine was already catering to the vintage market in the 80s. Online accelerated the trend, of course. But there are still plenty of thriving independent retailers, the ones who knew how to adapt.
