Title: EB-0 Cardinal Red? On Reverb
Post by: ilan on April 03, 2022, 03:56:16 PM
Really beautiful. I didn't know they existed. Or was it refinished?

Obvious replaced nut with overspray, it's a refin no question. Sold, whoever bought it got hosed.

Overpriced if it sold for the asking price, IMHO.

I see the replaced nut w/overspray but I don't see that the whole bass was refinished. Maybe Scott can elaborate.

It needs a functional bridge. Somewhere between the early 60ies and today correct intonation was invented.

For more discerning ears at least.

The finish looks a bit thick and unrefined. Lots of orange peel in some shots.

you're absolutely right about that, I agree completely.  The finish certainly hasn't aged like a vintage Gibson nitro finish. I stand by my statement,  it's a refin.

IMHO there orange peel isn't unusual and the finish isn't unusually thick. My '59 Melody Maker had a much thicker finish than that. Gibson finishes weren't consistent in thickness back then. Still, could be a refin.

A solid colour refin on a Gibson would be convenient if you had nasties to hide.

Saying that, would that level of orange peel look out of place on a '60s Ford Mustang? Did Gibson farm custom colour spraying work out to local car places like Fender supposedly did? One thing that makes me suspicious is how filled in and obscured the serial number is. The neck side dots also look a bit weird.

What am I missing here? Lots of checking and flaking, but the only spots I see orange peel is in the back of the headstock pic and near the tone knob.

Cracks and flaking are what I see. What I don't see is the fine checking  you would expect in a vintage nitro finish. That close up just confirms it for me, refin.

Agreed.  The fine finish cracking on my '64 EB-O is a very different pattern than the one shown.

And that looks like a refin that has gone through multiple freeze/thaw cycles.
