Got my 912 out of the shop today and drove it around for a couple hours! What a great machine. Takes me back to high school just to steer and shift the old girl. Just had to share it with you guys. Uwe, another good example of German engineering!

I don't fit in those beasties - leg-room issues...

Mid-life? I'm in my second mid-life fling! If it doesn't have a stick shift, I don't want to drive it! :)
My son and I started this project years ago when he was in high school. I finally got it finished and have a few cosmetic things to do, but it's 98% done. Really takes me back to when cars were so different than they are now. Actually, I think you'd fit into this one, there's actually a lot of room in the front of the cabin. I'm 6' tall and I have plenty of room. Now the back seat (in name only) is a different issue!!! Just enough room there for my briefcase! :P
-
Man thats a sweet ride very nice.
-
What a sweet car!
Growing up I really wanted one, I'm very jealous Bill ;)
-
Thanks guys. It's the only way I could afford a Porsche...........a piece at a time over an 8 year period!!!! It was a total rust bucket with a blown engine when I got her. It turned out nice. It's not a show car, but it is a great driver.
-
Looks like my 2x15 cab would fit on the passenger seat with the seat laid back. Definitely a workable gig wagon!
-
nice ride.. one of these days for me !!!
just in time for some snow in upstate NY.. :)
-
Beautiful! You don't see 912s very often at all.
-
Very nice! My first car was a German Opel Kadett 2 door wagon. A great gig machine (as well as other options with the back seat folded down) and it had a 4 speed as well!

I hear ya! My dream car was an Austin Healy 3000. I have a friend with one and I can't fit behind the wheel! Just too darn tight. At least my 912 is roomier.

Yep, the back seats fold down, so room for your cab for sure!

She won't see any snow or rain unless I get caught unawares!

True, many of them just rusted away. They were major rain sponges. They didn't sell as many of them as the 911. They were meant to be entry level porsches that replaced the old 356. They aren't worth a lot but they don't cost too much to maintain either.

That dash makes me wistful for high school too. My friend had a 914 that we tooled around in at lunch. Some scoffed at the 'Volkswagen Porsche' but that thing handled like it was on tracks and was a lot of fun!

Yeah, I remember the 914. It was a sound car, just a bit odd in it's styling. Mine has that flat opposed 4cylinder air cooled engine. Noisy and unmistakeable when you hear it.

Nice piece of work ;D. Back in 99 I bought a Silver Miata sport package and added a supercharger, header and nitrous kit. A Porsche was the top of the list but I wanted to make a few mods and I COULD afford to tear up the warranty on a twenty thousand dollar car. I COULD NOT afford to do that with a Porshe price tag. Anyway, nice ride.............enjoy ;D

Very nice, Bill! I've always liked the 912 series and thought they were one of the most classy Porsches.
My equivalent is my 208ZX Turbo, which has three or four issues that make it a pain to keep up with - mostly vacuum or electrical. I've put it under a car cover and it will be there until spring when hopefully I can find time to mess with it - I just haven't been able to do so.

My 1958 Fiat Spyder is still up on jackstands in the garage; I missed finishing it this summer. Here's what it should eventually look like, although mine is white:

your cars are getting to me. i may have to move trade out some basses for a fun car. Always wanted a red vette. had a 67 GTO way back that was a blast. had MB 55 AMG convertible a few years ago that paid for first semester of college for kid #1 >:(
-
Cool cars there Al! Wow, that Spyder is really unusual. Love to see it when it hits the road. The old Zs were such cool cars, the first real Japanese sports cars.

I'm 6'1" with short body/long legs syndrome...
... and Mark... 6'4"...? with those legs...? what was that you mentioned about an eyeful...? ;D
I just can't get "in-to" sports cars - they just don't feel right to me - I've been a van driver on an almost daily basis for over 27 years - can't imagine driving round with my tail that close to the tarmac... :o
I'm not soul-less either - I can appreciate an artform, regardless of origins...
Loud engines... standing on the end of the runway at Heathrow with four beautiful afterburners running at 110%... now that is heavy metal... 8)

Love 912s, affordable, easy to work on and just about the best looking of all the many 911s IMHO. That's a great car, Bill!
I've had a dozen sportscars, 13 if you count a '68 Vette, which I don't. The first one, a 1960 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite, had an 875 CC 4 banger, about 35 horsepower when new and no floor when I got it. I rebuilt the trans on my kitchen table out of parts from 2 gearboxes. Drove it from Florida to L.A. in 1976 stuffed with about everything I owned including my '55 Precision and '60 EBO. Outside of Tucson it sucked a valve and my buddy and I did an impromptu valve job at a DIY garage. Same guy I'll be sending my B-15N to rehab. Here I am doing brake work on the streets of Silverlake 2 years later right before the top and side curtains were stolen. At the time I owned 3 SVT cabs and 3 Coliseums. It was a practical car.

"Graduated" to Alfas and a Porsche. Had kids, moved to Louisiana and bought an F-250. The day my wife told me she was divorcing me I bought this. Not much to choose from in Natchitoches, LA. Everybody slags Fieros but this was the last year, with Lotus suspension and no self immolation option. Had around 90K on the clock when I bought it. I drove it coast to coast 3 times with no problems, great handling car. Slow but 35 Mpg at 80.
Moved to Alameda, CA. Bought this, definitely NOT slow. The 2 happiest days of a Vette owner are the day you buy it and the day you sell it...but it does have a certain appeal to a certain type of woman.

One of my 2 Z cars, 425 twin turbo horses or approximately 12 times the Sprite's. Stick shift as is everything I own. This will probably be my last car. Mostly I drive an S-10.

Great car stories guys! Man, I'd like a new Z car so bad, but our winters are so long here, I wouldn't get to drive it as much as I'd like and on snow, well, it's too crazy. I got my Eclipse 3 years ago and it's really good on snow, so that's a keeper for now.
I'm actually shopping for a Boxster that I can drive year round. If we retire a little further south in the future, a rear wheel drive sports car is definitely in the cards. I still have a craving for a Mustang GT ragtop.

Beautiful car ! Always nice to bring something back ! I can't afford a joy ride car (I spend to much on basses ;) ) I did however buy a reissue Schwinn Sting Ray in metallic grape just like the one I had when I was a kid, I love to ride it around the neighborhood I do however get some strange looks !

Ya 'spose I could talk my wife into letting me get a black car to go with my black Bronco?

LOL! My guitarist back in the '70s bought a 914 from our manager. Strange little car. You sat in it with your legs nearly straight out in front of you. The gear pattern was about 2". You could miss 2nd gear altogether if you weren't careful. They were also so light, that (as my guitarist did) if you tried to park in the snow, you could actually end up on top of a small drift, with your tires up in the air.

No reason to regret that at all. And I love that you get to ride with your brother!
-
Good one Scott!!! Man, you really should have a Harley!
-
Great picture. Your grin reminds me of a kid on Christmas with his new bike!
-
When Rick and I were 5 or 6 we both got Stingrays for our birthday up till then we had been sharing our cousin Lori's beat up third or fourth hand girls bike. I remember when my Dad asked us what colors we wanted I told him purple! Man I can't still see the look on his face, "purple ? really? aaww geeze". So My ex WWII Marine father goes out and finds me a purple Stingray! I'll never forget that, the bike meant the world to me. About the time I was 11 it got stolen my a local punk down the road, the Cops recovered it but it had been painted in gray primer and was all beat up. So fast forward to a few years ago. Schwinn recently reissuied the Stingray and when I ran across a Metalic Grape one in Towner's Bike Shop (the same shop where the originals were bought) I had to have it! It just so happened that they had a copper one just like Ricks, I told him about it but he said he wasn't interested. Maybe a year after I had mine he road it and something in him clicked he went right out and bought one !!! It was in fact the happiest I had seen him in years he was like a kid at Christmas! Do I need it naw but it sure makes me smile every time I see it in the garage! Bill a Harley ?? I road dirt bikes when I was young, there is no way I'd mix it with the idiots on a public road.
-
Ah Scott, I had a Harley for years and only had 10 or 15 near misses! Truth is, I wouldn't want to ride in public now days! I'm sticking to 4 wheel speedsters, much safer!
-
Beside the expense of a bike would cut big time into my bass habit. ;D
-
Completely awesome pic and story Scott!

I think Scott and his brother look like they are ecstatic with their 2 wheel rides! I know how they feel!
It was a labor of love and $$$!

As long as we're posting photos of the cool wheeled vehicles in our past....
1957 Dodge Coronet with the Power Pack option: 325 Super Red Ram V-8, 4 barrel carb, 3 speed Torqueflte pushbutton and dual exhausts.

1959 Studebaker Scotsman 1/2 ton. The build sheet listed 2 options: overdrive, class B turn signals and the 4.27 rear end. I drove it for 9 years.

Love those cars Denis!!! Man, the days of huge fins and super long wheel bases. Those there the days.
I really like that truck. I am gassing for a vintage truck from the late forties, early fifties. I don't need one, I just want one!!!!

Oh yeah, old Caddies are the best! Yours looks great! I remember the 59 (I think that was the year) had these weird up turned short fins, really funky looking. Some of those old Coupes where houses on wheels! Gotta love the old Camaro without all of the new electronic junk on the engine!
