Title: Incoming Hamer...Slammer
Post by: dadagoboi on August 24, 2015, 08:27:34 AM
I jumped on this 95% for the case.  I'm pretty sure it will fit my 1960 EBO which has been living in a Fender Electric 12 case since '73, long after the cardboard OEM disintegrated. I've been looking for a decent replacement ever since.

I like that!  Both tasteful and gaudy.

And a nice case, as noted.

The only thing I don't like about the bass is the pickups look too wide to be easily replaced.  Fingers crossed I'm wrong.

Tasteful case. If you keep the bass, you'll have to do something about the Clownburst.

I seriously doubt I'll keep it.  It's photoflame...besides any chance it has Night Ranger cooties on it, I'm not gonna even touch it.

Pickups are approx. 4 1/16" by 1 3/8" so not a standard size of any other 4 string pickup I can think of. They don't sound bad, at least not for the $50 I have into the bass. Seems like a couple people at the Hamer forum actually use the stock version of the bass to perform with.

Thanks for the info, Andy!  Just a little wider than the width of a ThunderBucker with ring so that makes it interesting.

A few years ago they were going for around $100 on Ebay IIRC but lately they've been more expensive.  I paid $215  BIN including shipping.  The case is worth at least $100 to me so the whole deal isn't bad, keep the bass or not.  I'd been wanting to get my hands on one for a while.

If I get really adventurous there's always the possibility of a shorty Eighter attempt.

I just got lucky with mine. It was an eBay deal from a local kid so I bought it and met him to pick it up. At the time there was another auction for one for like $180 I believe. I think you did good considering it has a nice case with it. I think a person of your talent could turn it into something really special  8)

Thanks, Andy.  Funny thing is, I hadn't had a bass order since the end of January and now I have 4 in the last two weeks, including a 3 pickup NR 12er.  So I don't have a lot of time for personal projects.  I'm not complaining!

Jacks basses are 32" scale set neck, those imports are 30" scale with a bolt on neck. Back when you could still order one from Hamer USA they priced out about $3000 street. I've had 5 of them and still have 2. My first Blades was one like the one in the above video that was made for him for that 85 tour, it was lavender with fuscia  painted bevels and the same white hardware. Wish I still had it.

Hey, that does make it a period piece. Don't always try to erase history. Or fins no longer in line with prevailing tastes!  :)

Can't get too sentimental about a $100 bass, Uwe.  A blue transparent toner spray job would turn that photo flame sunburst into a Jade/Purple Burst.  That might be cool, it would definitely be quick.

It's a shame there aren't more of the Hamer USA doublecut 4-strings around.  Most of the ones in circulation probably did originate from Blades!  Had it not been for Marcus, I'd still be on the hunt for mine...

Those little Slammer imports are actually a lot of fun!  I spent some time with the one Andy bought... very decent build, and it plays well and sounds massive.  That would be a mean little bass with some Thunderbuckers  8)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTdZ89Ac1fU

Blades is now playing a near exact copy of his Most recent hollowbody Hamer Basses by a brand called Atomic.

They look like dead on copies but with the rare early "Dan Armstrong" headstocks that Hamer did for Rockpile and a few other limited one-offs.

Saw Nightranger on TV a week ago and researched it a bit. Cannot believe how much they look like his Hamers.

......and man, those guys sure jumped around a lot. But the drummer still looks like Will Ferell from that movie where he kept playing his step-brother's drums :)

Apparently Ferrell can actually play drumes....and looks like Chad Smith's twin brother. See below.

"But the drummer still looks like Will Ferell from that movie where he kept playing his step-brother's drums ..."

My thoughts exactly, but I always liked his lead voice which was more manly than Blades' pop sqeal (though he does it well). And he didn't look hair band at all, more like he played with Huey Lewis & The News lead, which I thought was different.

My soft spot for Night Ranger comes from seeing them at the advent of their nascent success in a Orlando rock club holding a few hundrerd people (it was sold out) when they were just about transitioning from college radio to regular radio, it was the time when Rick Springfield's Affair of the Heart and Human Touch were on permanent rotation and Don't Tell Me You Love Me started creeping in. They were young, exhuberant, the stage was too small for their act, they were cocky and at the same time still a little insecure, but their ebullience shone through. The two lead vocalists sounded great and Gillis' Floyd Rose machinations worked well with Watson's more classical and EvH-influnced approach. I thought they would be going somewhere.

The slothead EB-0/EB-0L/EB-3/EB-3L had 19 frets.

It was originally Heritage Cherry. Uwe deliberately refinned it this way. IIRC, Mark suggested the colors but he meant blue with an orange border. Now it looks like something to play while you're sipping a pumpkin spice latte.

Uwe.....I've also got a bass with similar dot inlays, using real Colt 45 shell casing for all the dot markers. Factory original Hamer B12A made for.....Johnny Colt. (HaHa...get it...Johnny "Colt"....Colt 45 inlays....duh!....Much better that a joke using "Johnny" and making tiny toilet seat inlays, no? :)

I got it from John around 2000. He told me he also loaned it to Marcy Playground to use on the album with the "Sex and Candy" hit.

Nah!!! You're just 20 years too late for it to be a "original" idea :)

But it is still a very cool one.

....it would HaVE to either be a German idea or a Southern U.S. one, to have bullet shell casings for dot inlays.

The shell casing was my idea. A chunk had been shot out of the neck in a Texas barroom fight. I had located the bass, Uwe bought it and his luthier fixed it. Uwe asked for suggestions for the filled-in area, and I suggested that the shell casing would be appropriate.

Yeah, I recall the bar room shootout and hole thru the neck discussion.

Definitely a cool solution for the repair.

Also looks like great work and a well matched patch.

Doesn't really matter that Hamer previously did something similar 20 years ago for Johnny Colt.

The back story on the Gibson with the real bullet hole is what makes that one cool as hell.

Arrived...
Looks better in person: neck straight, action incredibly high, rubber band strings.  Lowered the action and tone improvement was impressive.  Frets are level.  Very good fit and finish.

(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/02/P1080888P_zpsun827zag.jpg) (http://s976.photobucket.com/user/cata1d0/media/02/P1080888P_zpsun827zag.jpg.html)

Played 'All Right Now' high riff...WTF?  Neck joins the body at the 16th fret instead of the 17+ on my '60.  That makes it difficult to hit high D on the G.  I guess Hamer figured it  was easier to just move the neck in than extend the body under the heel for the bolt on neck.  Now I know why there is so much space between the end of the headstock and the length of the case.

But all in all a pretty sweet bass for the money.

The '60 fits in the case like it was made for it.  TKL makes great ones in Canada.  The Epi Made in China whatevers are poor imitations.

Those cases are great.  There was a guy selling a bunch of NOS Hamer cases on Ebay for something like $60 shipped, but they were for the Monaco (long scale).  I have one like that that - lotta extra real estate up there by the head when the short and medium scales are in it.

That one is a nice fit with your EB0.

Neck joins the body at the 16th fret instead of the 17+ on my '60.  That makes it difficult to hit high D on the G.

I never realized that, but this is probably why the Slammer feels so tiny next to my short scale B4S.  Looks like on the USA basses they set the neck a lot more like the Gibson... joins at the 18th fret on the short scales, and the 17-ish fret on the medium scale.

Speaking of munchkins... I snapped a pic of the shortie getting dwarfed next to the beast you helped me chrome out!  :o  :vader:

Those cases are great.  There was a guy selling a bunch of NOS Hamer cases on Ebay for something like $60 shipped, but they were for the Monaco (long scale).  I have one like that that - lotta extra real estate up there by the head when the short and medium scales are in it.

That one is a nice fit with your EB0.

:o  :vader:

That Standard looks SHARP!  The B4s isn't bad, either!

Nice case. No reason to keep the bass, get some of your money back.
