Title: 2011 Movies
Post by: Highlander on December 01, 2010, 04:22:36 PM
Well, it's not far off now...

Anyone know what we have as the first biggies scheduled for the up-and-coming new year...?

The Coen Bros have this interesting remake coming in February...

Well for 2011, we have Paul, Sucker Punch, Thor, POTC On Stranger Tides, X-men: First Class, Super 8, Green Lantern, Cars 2, Transformers Dark of the Moon, Harry Potter 7 Pt. 2, Captain America, and Cowboys and Aliens to name a few that already have high chance of doing well. Out of all those, Paul and Sucker Punch are the only ones that come out before summer which is kicked off by Thor.

Oh we will be. Disney has already announced that they will be premiering the first trailer on Monday. They were even having a contest through Yahoo to fly a winner and 3 guests out here to see the premiere at Downtown Disney and gain early access to the park.

Your information seems a bit off. 4 was filmed by itself and they are planning to film a 5th and 6th one together.

I was wrong once before. :D

Ok, ok--many times.

I hope you're right, Big D. That would mean there's still a slim chance of being an extra.

Sucker Punch looks like rollicking good FUN too!!

That is brilliant! And the only way to still gracefully do something from the sword and scorcery/knights in shiny armor/dungeons and dragon genre which has been filmed to death since Excalibur some decades ago.

I saw Sucker Punch over the week-end.  For starters, it's a slightly disturbing movie, but is kind of a story of redemption and overcoming great odds.  It's kind of disjointed, and hard to follow at times.  I came out of it not really sure if I liked it or not.

The soundtrack, however is REALLY good.

I am still not really sure how I feel about Sucker Punch. The design was absolutely amazing and the girls were really hot. On the other hand, I started to get bored with the fight scenes that spent half their time in slow motion. Most fights seemed to have no stakes at all since the characters were all extremely proficient in eliminating the enemies.

Also, I recommend seeing Paul. I saw it a couple weeks ago and was greatly amused by it.

My son saw Sucker Punch & hated it. Said it was boring horrible plot & dialogue, boring after a while.

I saw Paul & enjoyed it, not great, but entertaining & witty.

The fight scenes in Sucker Punch, while pretty cool, didn't seem to have any real connection to the movie.  The "fantasy" dance idea was pretty weak.  It was as if they made two different movies, and ran out of money on both, and tried to splice them together.

Local reviews say:

- Eye candy is its only strength
- No plot
- Little coherence
- Designed to make a video game

Not inclined to spend $ on it.

Yup.  That sums it up.  They should have mentioned a good soundtrack, though.

About time that a good remake was made. This at least looks promising.

Tim Burton has made great films, but the Planet of the Apes 2001 remake wasn't among them, he failed abysmally on that, as if the subject was jinxed for him. The apes looked great, some ape characters were portrayed nicely and getting Charlton Heston in his five minute cameo as the dying Über-ape

to give an anti-gun rant was great irony, but for most of the time the film floundered with the storyline not flowing at all. Great chance wasted.

I enjoyed "Sucker Punch". The soundtrack was good and I really liked the way old and modern things were interspersed into the same scenes, like the B-25 and the dragon, the modern weapons into the WWI scenes, etc. The girls were damn hot and although it may have seemed like a video game-esque film I got a kick out of it.
Sure it had slow motion fight scenes but I didn't find them any more annoying that any of the other 5 billion movies since "The Matrix" which was filled with slo-mo fight scenes.

Doesn't anyone ever punch anyone like Clint Eastwood punched people in "Every Which Way But Loose"?

We saw Thor on Mother's Day. It was actually pretty enjoyable, funny, enough action & never took itself seriously. Chris Hemsworth made the movie. Great it's not but if you're a Marvel geek it was fun even though they deviated from the original story.

Last night the gf and I went to see "Super 8". It was surprisingly enjoyable and entertaining. Filming the movie as a 1979 period piece worked well, especially since I was about the same age as the kids in the movie (I was 15 in 1979). Most movies with child stars are annoying because the parts are written so that the kids seem much smarter than the parents (which may be true) and the kids play the parts with too much gung-ho. This movie was different because the kids each had flaws and baggage and were much more believable.

The main kid in the movie built lots of model kits like I did around the time and considering the time, it made me nostalgic for the '70s when we could hop on our bikes and ride around and  stay up late building models!

Seeing Pirates on Sunday...

There are a frightening amount of movies coming up...

We'll probably see Green Lantern and Transformers, not forgetting wrapping up the Harry Potter set...

My son, who is a BIG Green Lantern fan says that he won't even bother with the movie. For the kind of money they spent, he doesn't even think the graphics cut it.

Just got back from Green Lantern.  I really enjoyed it!  Hey, it's a COMIC BOOK!!!  It's not supposed to be Patton or The Sound of Music.  (And Gweimer, I'll bet I was following Green Lantern before your son was even born.  Tell him to chill.)

Story followed the comic book line reasonably well, great special effects, enough action to go around - I thought it was fun, and they set it up for a sequel.  I'll go see it if the sequel comes out.

Christoph Waltz was the villain, right? Was he doing his "charming until he snaps" thing again that will now follow him forever after his Inglorious Basterds success? His role in Water for the Elephants as the driven circus director was similar.

I saw Captain America tonight at a midnight showing with some friends. Really fun movie with a lot of laughs and a lot of action. The after the credits scene is more a of a trailer for The Avengers next year and so far it looks like it is going to be awesome as well.

Next week Cowboys and Aliens.

As idiotic as the "plot" was, Transformers: Pink Floyd Made Us Change the Name was purely viscerally, eye-poppingly, awesome. The first 3D movie I've ever seen that was a movie in 3D and not a series of gimmick shots during plot lulls. By far, the best of the three. The "twists" were no surprise, and they were actually fanboy friendly.

I swear Micheal Bay must have been channelling his inner nerd as well as his typical pubescent action pervert; the opening 'movie' scene is the typical female introduction ala Bay: a barely covered ass which had uncomfortably (for me in a theater with kids anyway) small underwear on top of it. No joke, calling the female lead "Labia Majora" would not have been the least bit of a stretch. Her panties were so skimpy that the back bulge of her vulva was plainly, visibly, defined. In IMAX, it was actually sort of creepy. I don't care how hot some chick is, I'd like to see some part of her face before I'm facing her primary sex characteristic in 3D from less than a foot behind, but then they are actually fairly subtle nods to Trekkies, the Trans-fans he has previously snottily eschewed, and an attempt at plot.

... so what you get is a movie that starts with awesome historical (mainly NASA) footage re-rendered in 3D with some pretty seamlessly interspersed 'behind-the scenes' plot shots, some really hot chick's cooter, and giant alien robots doing what you'd figure giant alien robots would do on Earth: whatever they want. Leonard Nimoy actually manages to work two of his past famous characters into his role! The 3D was superb and the robot renderings are a generation past the prior movies. If you want a summer popcorn flick, turn off your brain and view Micheal Bay's magnum opus.

I really like a good B movie.  That's where most of Stallone and other action star movies fell - and they're fun.

Heck, Bruce Lee spend most of his career trying to move UP to B movies, and Chuck Norris made a living off them.

I always enjoy Lone Wolf McQuade!

When it comes to b movies I quite like Time Cop...

Harry Potter came to a conclusion for us this week - the daughter is distraut... "What next...?" ;D
3d worked quite well but Jackie felt it was just there foir the sake of it - can't really argue that...
Now I'll wait until the double set brings both parts together and watch it as it should be viewed...

Also, the most pointless boxed set of all time came out over here for the movie's release... the first six movies + movie seven part one... wtf's the point...?

Other than $$$, there isn't one.  It should come with a coupon good for the 7th movie and room in the box for that disc.  Wait six months (which I will, if not longer) for the full set...

Roshina will be 18 this year and grew up with the books (whenever they came out we'd have a family reading session and as she grew more adept at reading she had to take her turn, always reading aloud - I always thought Hagrid should have had a Scottish accent ;)) and the films so we always bought them as they came out but I waited with the last DVD and probably will wait a little further now...

Has anyone seen the Millenuim Trilogy films (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as I'm curious to get the 3 movie package when it turns up - they were knocking out the books at a cheapie outlet so bought them for Jackie (who is a voracious reader) - about $10 for the three...

Saw Cowboys and Aliens tonight.
Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde did a good job, and the action sequences were OK, but the film was about 15 minutes too long and Harrison Ford's character arc should have been better written.
