A logistic marvel to this day. And from then on in took less than 12 months to beat Nazi Germany. I don't think that any other single military operation of that size has been that successful before or after. It was a demonstration of US military power/wit/engineering in conventional warfare and - together with the use of nuclear arms in the Pacific theater - a pillar for the US status as a world power post-war ("we can either destroy you with our nuclear arsenal or send enough well-equipped troops over quickly enough any place in the world to take your country over").
It also got Europe and eventually Germany rid of the Nazi scourge and was therefore done for the worthiest cause imaginable. There are few just wars, this was one of them. Hats off to all those who comtributed to it.
