Title: Oh...MY....EB1 on the bay
Post by: gweimer on March 04, 2014, 11:26:04 AM
Well, in looking at that NR project, I came across this.  WOW.

And that, boys and girls, would be your basic "Rara Avis".

Mighty pretty.

She's gone...

Pristine but for the neck damage at the heal...

Beauty. Olivia's usually has such nice vintage stuff. Not surprised it's gone already.

Looks like they relisted it for those who may be chomping at the bit.

and to think terry only paid 11,000 for his 1953 eb-1. :o

Ouch! 11k, that's nuts. A refin 50's EB1 went for 1,000 a few months ago.
I was wondering about the lack of purfling lines on the Olivia's bass. Seems odd that Gibson would have been so inconsistent about leaving them on or off at the factory.

The one at Olivia's looks like a refin to me. Way too clean shiny headstock. The Gibson logo should have been yellowed over time.

It's a Gibson reissue , the lack of purfling is the least of its inconsistencies compared to an original EB.

Were all the reissues made by Norlin? I think they just took over that year. I'd imagine the majority of people making the instruments were still hold outs from Kalamazoo at that time.

These were made in Kalamazoo. By this time CMI had been taken over by the predecessor of Norlin, but CMI was still in charge.

It would have been way overpriced back then even if it had been 100%. As it turned out, it was a POS with a bad neck. But don't get me going on that one again.

I figured it was a refin. It's so pretty.  Didn't know there were reissues. When were they made and what would they be worth?

The one at Olivia's looks like a refin to me also. It does have a few finish cracks but no purfling lines. Most of the reissues I've seen have been in two different types of cases. I've never seen one like this. The case candy is the same as what came with mine.

They were mostly made in 1970 even though the serial numbers (one of which is remarkably well intact for a refin on the bass in the original post) can indicate 1969. The reissues tend to go for less than the original run EB/EB1 basses from the fifties. Over $3k is on the high side for a reissue.

Thank you. I'd really love to own one someday.

That has got to be the skinniest case ever! Would any other Gibson bass besides a 20/20 fit in that?

A 20/20 would just barely fit. Might be a bit long..........

Another 20/20 used as a Crowbar would do it... :vader:

Fixed that for you!

I've always held that the 20/20 is in fact an EB 1 after Back to the Future treatment. That red 20/20 looks hot, hot, hot ...
