Title: On the road with The Nasty Habits
Post by: TBird1958 on May 19, 2009, 11:51:17 PM

The Nasty Habits played 3 shows in our adopted hometown of Pt. Angeles, Wa. this past weekend, we usually enjoy the trip out because it's short ride on a Ferryboat and a trip across the Hood Canal bridge. After that an hour or so driving gets you to P.A., this time however we had to take the long way around because the bridge was being rebuilt thus increasing our time on the road greatly. I choose to make the trip a bit longer yet by visiting the Pacific coast and then traveling north thru the state's heavily forested west coast.
Here's a couple pics from the trip..........
There really is a Sleater-Kinney  Rd, it's near Olympia, Wa.

From there I went west thru the Chehalis gap, which has a major effect on western washington's weather
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/ptangeles/ptangeles004.jpg)

Downtown Aberdeen, home of Nirvana and of course the Thunderbird motel!

Heading North up Hwy 101 you pass thru areas of forest that are heavily logged off and some that are so dense you  get barely any light at all.............

Hwy 101parallels the Pacific for some distance, this is at Kalaloch beach.
I passed thru Forks, Wa. where a good portion of the movie "Twilight" was filmed, here is the house that the film's female star lives in...

From there Hwy 101 turns towards the east-and rounds to the northern part of the peninsula taking you past more logging country, the Discovery channel's series "Axmen" is filmed in part near here
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/ptangeles/ptangeles032.jpg)

As you continue east Lake Cresent comes into view, it's about 7 miles long, very deep and the surrounding mountains come right to the water's edge.........
And my first stop in Pt Angeles  ;D
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/ptangeles/ptangeles037.jpg)
Thursday found us at The Lyre's Club.....playing for about 250, the surf green 'Bird works nicely with my new plaid dress  ;)
Friday was a repeat, but with way more people, I used the purple '76. The brunette in the foreground is a  gun-toting Forest Ranger, and a real sweetie.
Saturday  had us at Steele's, a much larger place playing 350 or so.........The stage here is a big hollow box that sucks up bass and turns it to undefined mud! We spent a fair bit of time eq'ing at soundcheck, the N.S. Mk.II worked pretty nice!
And the crowd was fantastic!....
You know it was a good show when there's girl undies on the stage and every body in the band still has their's on  ;D

Nice photos, mark...that shows why so many of us love the state of Washington.

And looks like the crowd stawmped the place down at your shows!

It's actually a dress and while being *alittle* longer than some of my other skirts it's anything but modest  ;)

Looks like it was a great road trip... Wonderful scenery...

Oh yeah, and the watering hole at the end of the trip, of course...  ;)

One of my great ambitions is to travel north from California up the Pacific Highway to my mother's birthplace in Vancouver, and maybe keep going... that would be some trip - the entire Pacific rim... err... one of my more spaced moments... movin' on...

Your state is on my list of "been there three or four times and never saw a damn thing" states.  My last job I was a national specialist for my company and often I would fly in early, pick up the rental car and drive to the account and stay there until I fixed the problem or was thrown out when the customer closed.  I did this constantly - sometimes getting in before dawn and leaving the same day at night.  I've been to many great places but didn't ever really get to see much >:(

One of the days I've got to get back your way.

There's a lot worth seeing...there are five climate zones in Washington, from the country's only cold-weather rain forest to a bit of sand dune desert.  And lots of good microbrew!!!  Yay!!

Microbrews and bacon encrusted maple bars!

Our keyboard player and I were on our way to lunch in downtown Pt. Angeles when we passed a little doughnut shop that had our band's show poster in the window, we went in to thank them and found these beauties on the shelf!
We both feared for our girlish figures and the potential heart attack from consuming even one of these..........so they're kinda like seeing Tigers at the zoo - nice to look at but you don't want to take one home with you.

I was prepared to comment on the magnificent scenery and what looks like a really good time you had at the shows, but then I saw the bacon encrusted maple bars and now all I can think is "I gotta have one of those"!

Being a "S*d B*st*rd" vegetarian, I think I'll pass... and at enormous risk, I'll paraphrase that garlic quote... "a moment in the mouth, and a lifetime on the hips..." ?

The bacon maple bars might go well with Bacon Jam (http://skilletstreetfood.com/baconjam.htm).

And enjoyed with a shot or two of Bakon Vodka (http://bakonvodka.com/).

The heck with all-a-y'all.  ;)

I'm heading home to get some nice slices of that 5 pounds of brisket I smoked yesterday.  We ate all the salmon I smoked while I was finishing the brisket.

No bacon needed.   8)

There was a billboard on the A4 (main road from Heathrow to central London) in the Earls Court area sponsored by the Meat Marketing Board showing sizziling bacon rashers in a frying pan and a big neon sign with numbers counting down declaring the "... Number Of Vegetarians In Britain..."

Reputedly one of the toughest "flavours" to give up...

Over 20 years since I've had a "bacon-buttie" - that's a "sandwich", usually served with HP sauce, to those not up-to-speed in "UK-speak"  ;D

I once had a form returned because I put "Vegetarian" down as my religion...

My family came from Island fishing communities, Pilgrim, and one of my uncles used to regularly bring home very fresh wild salmon... 20 years since that, too, and I can be precise on dates of going fully veggie as it's now my 20th wedding anniversary, here...

My veggie daughter has fake bacon around here (morning star brand?). It tastes ok, but it's no replacement for the real thing! Since she's been a vegetarian (3 yrs on the 30th) we've adjusted our eating habits so that we can still have family meals. One thing I doubt that I would ever give up is steak. I can't get enough of good steak. YMMV tho.

Always fun when a bit of bootleg video shows up on Youtube, this is from Saturday night, please excuse the poor sound quality - esp the bass, it's just from the camera's mic and sounds very thin and overly clanky.
Anyway here we are having some fun with "Boys of Summer", the crowd is having a pretty good time of it  ;)

And just incidentally, the inventors and proud purveyors of Bacon Salt and those other tasty condiments are WSU Cougars.

The only amazing thing is that they didn't start a micro-brewery, too.  That would have covered two of the Cougs' primary food groups...

 Oh that happens..................
Let's just say that my constitution deals with "road food" alot better than our Guitarist, sadly the rest of the band knows this and they all refuse to room with her. My only revenge is that I often snore loudly.

We'd be great roommates then because I am the snoring champion!

Thanks for the welcome Mark, but it's just me Robert.  I left for a while but now I'm back again.  I decided to use part of my old name in German.  Sort of like the old Me 410.

Yep, I do to :)  Seems to fit them very well.

But, I have to say this, Jule's band name is even better - " The Silver Brazilians"  ;D  I'm sure that they didn't consider this when they came up with the name but every time I see the name I just get the mental image of a bunch of old blue haired women visiting the waxing salon  :o :o ;D

Dave
I went out to the coast 'cause I hadn't been that way in about 30 years, I'd quite forgotten how beautiful it is out there. The drive was really nice a Tuesday with no traffic on the road at all between Aberdeen and Forks ( 100 miles) gave me the chance to "drive" my Subaru which, is no sports car like Tom's Mustang or Terry's Vette - but it had 600lbs of gear and me it and responed reasonably well.
Coming home we went East and South along Hood Canal which is a very beautiful drive as well.....

And here's a couple more shots...............

This is a mothballed nuclear facility at Satsop............It' actually looms out of nowhere and looks like it's from Orwell's 1984, rather bizarre..............Ministry of Truth anyone?

The car, fully loaded = 2 GK 4x10's, Gk1001RBII, Line6 pedal, In ear monitor set, 3 Thunderbirds and 2 suitcases, at times I thought it was riding so low that I'd get stuck on a piece of toilet paper

I cheat.  I make home brew but don't go the full route of cooking the barley - I buy the prefab kits which include a can of hopped malt extract and a pack of dried yeast, like the Cooper's malt extract kits shown here: http://www.thegrape.net/browse.cfm/2,1145.html .

That makes it pretty simple.

There are kits from a number of makers on the same site:

My wife Cath convenes the largest Antiques, Collectors and Hobbies fair in Australia and for the last 2 years she has had the "N" gauge railway guys come up and setup a huge display in part of one of the six venues. I know Mark is into this but I'd never really seen one of these displays up close before. The level of detail was incredible.
