Back playing again... but you won't believe what...
« on: April 22, 2013, 04:31:38 PM »
The Jazz and the PC had an outing on Sunday at an invitation I received some months back but I had to think rather carefully when I got a list of things for the trial run...

It was obvious that there was going to be some brass and a female vocalist...

What did I have to learn...?

Fontella Bass - Rescue Me
Gloria Estefan - 1 2 3 4
Foundations - Baby Now That I've Found You
Whitney Houston - Saving All My Love
Sandie Shaw - Always Something There To Remind Me *
Swing Out Sister (Dusty cover) - Am I The Same Girl
Dionne Warwick - Walk On By *
Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On There Own

* did not get played - but we did jam on AWB's Pick Up The Pieces

I mostly played the fretless but used the PC on Rescue and Baby to give a fretted sound...

Got invited to join today... I have to get back into sight reading, though... what is quite frightening is that I enjoyed playing the material... the bass in all of the material we played was fun to play...! I'm stunned I just said (wrote) that...

Line up is guitar/bass/drums with 2x tenor sax (one is a "c-melody" I think) and a trumpet player, and female vox... seven piece...

I need to get down the shed... ;D

Doesn't look like you'll be sneaking any Who, Sabbath, Zep or Hendrix into the set list.
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

Gosh, I feel like I've just stepped into an alternative universe, although being able to play outside your genre, of course, is a mark of versatility.

Congrats!  I don't typically listen to much of the stuff that my band plays either, but the r&b and motown covers are always a blast.  The horn section would be fun (we only have one sax/multi-instrumentalist).  You'll have to add some Tower of Power and Ohio Players!  8)

Having a chick singer up front and getting paid makes it easier too

The bass line of Fontella Bass' Rescue Me is the thing I always play when I pick up a bass.

Great bass-driven pop song.

Cheers for the comments - rescue me is a real train to play, Chris...

Dave and Denis... shame on you... ;D

Billy... if Lemmy can do Ace acoustically I'm sure Motorhead could be tweaked to include a bit of sax...  :vader: and Joe, those artists would suit, but Ari, remember that some Zep stuff has been covered with a horn section... now that might be an idea...

Tony... I used the PC for Rescue and the Foundations and the sound fitted fine... still not fitted that Lollar pup to the beast yet...

As Scott noted, outside the box but fun - I particularly liked the higher end stuff I had to play on the Jazz on the Amy Winehouse number and it worked really well... and Mark... fully agreed and understood - I don't know what their long-term aim is but I think some of them are session musos - the horn players were exceptionally good - I think the singer is the trumpet-players daughter - some of them are school friends got back together...

... and Bill and Michael... getting back into sight reading, something I have not done since school, and versatility... well, it's a relatively simple language... ;)
