The story goes he dreamt of Hendrix and recorded this shortly before he passed... reputedly his last recorded work...

EC credited Duane with writing the "Chariot-ride" slide intro to this number... arguably Duane's most famous slide work, albeit virtually unknown to all but those who know...

As perfect an example of "hittin' the note" at a venue as I care to post...

Duane kept the ABB alive and kicking until they broke by doing dozens of sessions, mostly for Atlantic... a prime example of pure simplicity... another example of hittin' the note...

RIP wherever you may be... :)

The Outpost Cafe / Pigs might fly... the London skyline right now...
« on: September 26, 2011, 12:24:13 PM »
Anyway, so where was I... ah yes...

Well Officer, I was driving in a westerly direction on the Embankment earlier today when I glanced over at Battersea Power Station and happened to notice a 30 foot pig, floating through the air...

35 years ago Pink Floyd's design team thought it would be a great idea for an inflatable pig tethered between the towers of a London landmark which was destined for a much vaunted theme park (still is - never arrived) and it got loose and floated into the Heathrow flightpath - it was famously reported by a British Airways pilot (yep... breathalised on touchdown) and I kept this lovely cartoon from the time (not my scan as its somewhere in the loft "safely stored" with my Peter Cook T'bird pup )

... and if you google "Pink Floyd Pig" you'll find todays recreation... second time in my life I've seen a flying pig... (hmm... better check the lottery... ;D)

My goodness... where did those 35 years go...?

... for whatever reason...

I once asked Uwe about his FP EB1 and he did not but her for that reason, she was a prime example for Ze Kollection and I know his Explorer is technically rarer than the original three, but I would be surprised if he did not declare an interest in one of those, if not all three...

I bought my Peter Cook purely because she spoke to me through the glass of the shop I first saw her in but could not afford at the time, but a year later when I tried to buy a white EB2 that lady moved to the Bruce Foxton and the Thunderbird was back, twenty pounds cheaper... mine...!

Strangely enough I have a yearning to own a CF Martin (out of my range for the forseeable) and I must admit to loving the idea of owning the Hank Williams one that belongs to Neil Young... that one would have such an interesting story to tell if she could...

Hank and Neil's 1941 D28...

Anyone care to share any stories of how they came to own their "baby", or something they would love care for...?

I'd still like to get a "real" EB2 or a Rivoli; one day... one day...

Gibson Basses / Priceeeeey '64 TBII - unbroken - crackling fin
« on: July 03, 2011, 04:48:23 AM »
The crinkly-crackly '64 T'Bird link

SORTED! (I can't remember how to shorten the link... Mods please do for me then I can check how you did it... ta)

One unusual (?) thing I noticed is the direction of the grain on the upper fin... not in line or even near it...

Got to admit a certain degree of GAS with absolutely no Gaviscon handy...

Well, the Thunderbird video thread is ticking over nicely so I thought why not give the other classic shapes a spin...

Gibson Basses / Q. What makes the perfect Thunderbird...? Discuss...
« on: June 01, 2011, 02:13:37 PM »
I have never ever handled a Gibson Thunderbird, in fact the only Thunderbird I have ever played is my PC...

There are reverse and NR; through, fixed and bolt-on; "stealth" 'birds - those with a T'Bird pup in another body; the copys - my PC will only ever be a "tribute" to the original article.

There are those that play them for the look and those that play them for the sound...

I know there are envious comments about the white TBII that migrated from George to Uwe; I have heard comments about specific eras of production and variants, about attempts to recreate that "vintage" sound, but what makes perfect for you...? My interest here is from a players point of view, not a collectors point of view... to me, the sound and feel of an instrument are what count so I'm going to be fin-ist here

Conversely, what about the failures, the variants that just don't work, the issues (neck weakness, low output pups, that sort of stuff), etc

My PC could be considered a "stealth" EB3L with an alternate bridge pup to give a more "modern" sound mix but to me it has those magical qualities - mahogany and a through-neck...

I'd like to hear what you think...

The Outpost Cafe / WWII flying booklets and such...
« on: May 07, 2011, 02:59:51 AM »
I've been a bit preoccupied with my Chindit research ( [excitable boy]when you get the chance to talk to veterans that survived the Burma conflict, you grasp firmly and don't dare let go - doubled the size of my book overnight - already 300 pages of A4/letter[/excitable boy] :o) of late which has seriously derailed plans for certain items laid-up in the shed but this was posted up on the WWIItalk site that may be of interest...

This one is a wartime magazine called Thunderbird, from a base in Florida

I was down in Devon this weekend and my buddy and I have a habit of trawling the chazzers (as my bud calls the charity shops) - anyway, I walked into one called Sue Ryder and there was this P copy being sold for £89.99 and reduced to £59.99 - I gave Roshina a call and told her it was pale blue (wot, sea-foam?), no pale blue... yep, she was interested, anyway... now, the setup was iffy but the neck was of interest to me - D profile, like my PC and the fretless neck I put on my Jazz (for which my daughter is still not fully forgiving me for)... oh yeah, they had broken the padlock key and sold her to me for £54.99 ($90.71)
Set her up and tried running through my MAG300 and the sound is pretty good - happy daughter...

The head is oddly shaped but she looks and plays well for the money, sound is pretty good, strings feel easily playable, finish is reasonable - an odd bit is the cut-through on the scratchplate, but as it is an "R" and my daughter's name is Roshina...

Made in China - not stripped to check construction - neck is similar to maple with a rosewood board; skunk-stripe on the back...

Other than that, not much else known - the shop's website does not appear to show the instruments... also saw Strat copies but a quick search found reference to an LP guitar...
