wow, only a burst finish available for the tbird!  doesn't seem like it would be too hard to spray some other colors.  I know they're pushing the 'traditional' angle, but still...

the guitar of the month program makes more sense; look at all the gow basses on ebay.  I don't know if the guitars sold any better, but if they did, I think Gibson would have stuck with gow.

I like that sg diablo, but it would really nice with chrome hardware. ;D

The bigger thing is the 5 string T bird missing. I would snap one of theses up while dealers still have them.

I like the description of the 3 point bridge.

It's the industry standard!

Everybody has copied the design, you see so many of them on other brands.

Are they kidding?

Is Uwe working for Gibson now? They too are claiming that black pickup covers sound better.

Quote from: gibson.com

the Thunderbird IV is equipped with Gibson's new TB Plus ceramic magnet humbuckers with black covers to deliver a massive, powerful bass tone.

I like the description of successes in the Guitar of the Ebay Dumping Ground Week:

Last year’s lineup produced some instant classics—the Reverse Flying V, the SG Standard Silverburst, the Firebird Zebrawood, and the Les Paul Antique Classic Artist Series.

Basses?  We don't need no stinking basses!!

I thought the inherent sonically superior qualities of the TB Plus were undisputed even among the most fervent chromie-halflings and that you kids were just obsessed about the look?

I guess they could bring out a chrome (or nickel) hardware TB now just to do something different after 21 years of black hardware on them, but the way they have now scaled down their bass program to just two models, each one of them available in one fin only, I wouldn't hold my breath! We'll probably see a lot of ltd. run alternative fin TBs this year, I can't believe they will just stick to sunburst.

Wonder whether at least one of those 12 GoM will be a bass? Doubtful.

Keeping what sells and discontinuing what doesn't. How dare they!  :P ;D

If the limited edition colors and maple top and faded versions had sold well, you wouldn't see non-authorized dealers selling "unplayed" ones on eBay for well under the authorized dealer MAP.

At the risk of sounding like a dumbass, what is GoM or GoW?

Their Guitar of the Week program from last year, which will now be Guitar of the Month. Again, I imagine the reason for the cutback must be because the sales weren't as good as expected.

Damn, now I guess the other colored Thunderbirds are going to be going up on eBay for a while at least. I need another white one, too.

Somehow I just think there will be at least one bass in the GoM....perhaps that nice red 'Bird that was in the NAMM photos. I'd be fine with that. I think we should be glad the Bach NR's aren't too far from coming into being and take some solace in that......holding your breath waiting for Gibson is.........obviously not a good idea.

I would kill for a white Bird. I'd even settle for an Epi.

Grr... It seems like theres no middle ground. A company either has a zillion versions of the same 2 or 3 basses, with differences in color, hardware, material/const. (like Fender, ESP, Schecter). Or they have 2 or 3 basses in 1 style (like Gibson or Gretsch). You'd think a company that already has several options/design to build distinct basses, would. *sigh* I guess thats just the individual in me speaking up. I mean, who wants to be different. Of course, only people that can afford custom basses want to be different.... how silly of me.....  :P

That being said... I do really like the Guitar of the 'Whatever' idea. It does give, at least guitar players, the option of getting an affordable semi-custom guitar at a more affordable price. Who knows... out of 12 we might get one bass. Which will probably be a bass they used to offer... in a finish they used to offer....  :P

Not GoW, but wow! I just noticed how they have slashed their guitar line as well ...

http://www.gibson.com/en%2DUS/Divisions/Gibson%20USA/

... gone are classics like ES-335 and Firebird (yes, the iconic Firebird!) and obviously the Godess girlie guitars weren't much of a sell either, they are now down to LP, SG, V (rev and non-rev) and Explorer.

Slashing the Firebird is a bit harsh IMHO.  :'( :'( :'(

So only the bestsellers wil be regular production and the rest is Custom Shop.

...or Historic Collection. There are more of those than Custom Shop models. Especially in the Les Paul series.

Look in the Designer/SG section of the Custom/Historic section http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/designer/list.html and click on Limited models. Still plenty of goodies in there, and Gibson probably can't justify making any of them regular production models.

I just wish they would do a Historic Collection bass or two.

Well, the Historic Collection non-reverse Firebird sure is nice, if you have a fondness for ugly ducklings. There's a lightly reliced (not by the factory) NR Firebird, couple years old, at a San Antonio store. If I had an extra $1500 lying around to spend on a guitar, I'd buy it.

Here's another indication of where Gibson is going with its special issues: http://www.modernguitars.com/archives/004202.html

I'm sure Uwe will be first in line, but these apparently don't come standard with a stovepipe hat so I'll have to pass.

My son will want one and I will have to fend him off more likely!

When it comes to stovepipe hat wearing guitarists, I still tend to prefer this gentleman here:

Also a lot less sloppy. Slash is almost as bad as Jimmy P.  :-X

I guess your going to have to visit the land of Lincoln (Illinios)

I already have a "slash" bass

A picture that has been deemed pure- This dog is "Slash" to rabbits

Thought this might be worth updating/commenting/bringing up again.
Now Gibson has put up ALL of the 'GoM' Guitars. All the way to Jan of '09.
And I guess they really meant 'guitar' when they said it; not a bass in sight. But still some interesting designs.

I particularly enjoy the  'Reverse Explorer',
http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Divisions/Gibson%20USA/Products/Designer/ReverseExplorer/

and the Chrome SG Diablo.

The Reverse Explorer's headstock is hideous.

I'm sure it will be a hit though.

Crappy site. Why can't they show a whole picture of the guitars????

I saw the reverse Explorer at the Messe. Doesn't look bad at all though the pancake headstock - though I believe they took that from old Gibson/Ted McCarthy designs for the Modernistic Guitar line - is ... unmentionably ügly ... There is nothing new about this though, Glenn Tipton has been playing reverse Explorers from Hamer for decades, he even claims to have come up with the idea.

I als saw the Holy V - that thing has carveouts that go all the way through the body so it is very light. No doubt the sound will also be affected some by the lesser amount of wood.

Plus there were the Slash signatures and the Johnny Winter Firebird V in relic look - I must say Fender seems to be more adept at this, I wasn't really convinced.
